Newish here. Appreciate all the great info and support the site offers. I used alot of information gathered here for the following rebuild which has taken the past 6 months or so to accomplish. Almost done.

Its a 20' x 30' 3-bay attached garage. Ceiling is 11' with my MBR above it. I have done the following so far with all work geared towards auto work on my Land Rovers:

- Raised headers for larger 8' x 8' doors (to fit the lifted trucks)
- Removed old storage loft unit and built new shelf/loft along the 30' wall
- Built two storage closets on either side of garage (compressor in one - storage in the other)
- New steel insulated doors
- New Liftmaster jackshaft openers
- New epoxy poly-urea/poly-aspartic floor (Thx GarageGuy - great floor at a great price)
- New electrical 100A sub-panel + a ton of new 120v/240V outlets
- Installed 2 Qmark electric heaters (gas was too complicated to put there)
- Hooked up the PC 240V monster compressor I bought last fall at a steal
- Painted walls and ceiling - baseboard moldings installed
- New Craftsman tool boxes for all the tools
- New and used Gladiator storage units - like them and they have held up well
- 2 new workbenches - 8' wide - one will be metal working area w/steel counter top for vise, drill press, grinder, sander, etc...
- Six (6) 8' flourescent ceiling lights (2 in each bay)

Too be done yet:
- Some banners or roller shades to hide the loft storage
- Install a few more Gladiator wall cabinets I have
- Possible 4-post lift (still debating)
- Library ladder system to access the loft - arrived yesterday - goes up today
- Need more tools to fill the cabinets :bounce:
- Re-install second heater (decided to move location)
- Plumb air lines (hardlines or may just use rubber hose for near-term)
- Have 3 more 8' flourescent ceiling lights to go up

I hired a PODS unit for one month to sit in my driveway and store all the clutter while the big work was being done and the floor. Good decision there as it made it easier than moving things in and out all the time.

Pics in follow-up posts.

Yes - each tool cabinet is 42" wide - two of them are side-by-side.

I had a line on a returned 52" unit in the same style. That was around $1600 or so all together. I decided to get 2 x 42" chests for only $400 more - and thus get 84" of tool storage vs 52". Sears was running a special when I was there picking up the 52" unit so I swapped. I am glad I did.

Forgot to mention that I also had blown-in insulation done before the walls were painted to help with the heating in the winter. Also added track lighting above each workbench and also above the too chests for better visibility.

Can you tell me what kind of light rail system you have used over your work benches? i would like to buy some to replace my aging light rail 4 bulb rail..

How did you get the chips on the baseboards without getting excess on the wet floor?

I had a company do the floor (GarageGuy who posts here). Maybe he can respond. IIRC, they epoxy the baseboard first and then chip it before they put any epoxy down on the floor. So they can sweep up the excess before putting the floor epoxy down.

Thx for the nice words. Yes - the local guys at Sears now know me well.

I bought the low-end Hampton Bay track lighting at HD or Lowes. Its pretty cheap and works fine. I will take some better pics of the lights later. The one above the tool chests are halogen bulbs on a 4' track and look fancier than the other lights above the workbenches which are more std fixtures on an 8' track.

Thx for the nice comments. I am happy so far with how it has evolved. Took longer than I thought and more $$$ but that is always the case.

Here is the library ladder installed. Very nice and makes accessing the loft area much easier:

Here is another shot of the toolboxes with the new air-line reels I just installed:

Here is 1 rover - '66 Series IIA SWB - needs a frame swap soon among other things - this is a longer term project:

Here is my baby - '93 NAS Defender 110 out where it belongs:

Here is the commuter car (I work from home:bounce:) '04 Discovery:

With all the rovers, now you know why I need a nice garage - usually more than one of them always needs some work.

The ladder is a nice touch! Does the brake have enough friction to lock?? after all you are retrieving some big stuff, not books..

How come you didn't get the gladiator workbench? they look like the craftsman workbench you have there.

The rovers are looking good!

AWESOME SHOP!! Love the storage idea. I hung shelves from the ceiling with redi-rod, but I like your idea MUCH better. Maybe I can redo them like that. Great tool collection - are there duplicates or do you own one of every tool ever made??

I haven't used the ladder much yet so I can't really give you an opinion on use. I can say that it is well built and very sturdy. The ladder pulls out away from the wall to a more suitable angle for climbing. The rollers are super-heavy-duty and it went up quickly and easily. I would likely need two people anyway for the heavy stuff up there so this is more about access than anything else.

Yes - you have a good eye - they are Craftsman benches. This was one mistake I made in the build. I bought the Sears benches primarily because it was rated at 2500lbs vs 1500 for the Gladiator - plus I wasn't sure I wanted the butcher-block like top on the Gladiator. I thought the Sears one would be built better for that weight rating and I was wrong. Plus the gladiator roll boxes don't fully tuck under the Craftsman bench as well so I will have to mod the bench slightly to get it to fit better. Not hard to do but this would have not been needed at all if I had gone with the Gladiator top.

Ha - You can never have too much tool storage!

I am not a tool collector which is to say I only buy what I use or have used before and know I will need again. So far, one of the 42" cabinets is full but this is mainly for metal working stuff plus all the car kits (brake flaring tools, engine diagnostics, tap and die, etc...). The second chest is awaiting a new mechanics tool kit I am considering. I have had an older (15+ yrs) 200 piece Craftsman kit that I have added to over time and has served me well. It will likely go in my basement shop to make way for a new kit for the garage which should help to fill out that chest.

Wow! The color worked really well and the baseboard just gives it a finished look. Everything looks great! Big change from when I first came. I have some pics that I will post as well.

I love the ladder for the overhead shelf. I'm gonna have to come by and steal that idea from you if you don't mind. It would go well with what I currently offer.

Thank you for letting me be a part of your garage project.

BTW, how do the pole pads work?
