One triple bank VS two double bank tool boxes?

This will be for home garage use. I am debating between going with a triple bay box (~72" long) or going with two double bank boxes (~58" long /each).

Price wise, they'd both end up costing about the same for me. The difference would be the two double bank boxes would add up to a lot more storage room, but it'd be more divided up, which I guess would come down to personal preference at that point.

If I were to go the double bank route, I could always just add on the second box once/if I fill up the first box. Since I plan on buying used, the only issue I may see here is that if I wanted a single long continuous box, I'd have to wait until I found one with similar dimensions (height and depth).

The boxes won't be moved around at all, so mobility won't really be a factor.

I am trying to think of other possible reasons why one or the other may be better. Hopefully people with experience with this will be able to provide some input/feedback.

Thanks!

How big is your shop? If its in one location I tend to favor a smaller box and move stuff I really don't use somewhere out of the way to another old box. As you said, if and when get another used piece as it comes along for that.

I'd go with triple bank personally, but that's just what would work best in my shop

Two doubles, but be selective on the drawer layout of each.

My philosophy has allways been more drawers more storage. Plus you could look at the cubic in. storage. Triple bay will probably be deeper than the double bays. And if your lookin to use the top as a work bench it will be a deeper workbench.

The larger your tool collection is the more important the capacity and dimensions of each individual drawer becomes when trying to obtain efficient tool storage. If you have limited numbers of wrenches or sockets for instance and you want to store them all in one drawer, then you wouldn't need a very large drawer. The same drawer size would not be adequate for someone with a large selection of wrenches that also wants to store them all in one drawer. After accumulating tools for 35 years, the only way I can acheive effective organized storage is within a 30" deep roll cab that features many different sized drawers. Having multiple 2" deep drawers plays a huge part in my efforts to maximize cubic efficiency without having to pile tools on top of each other.

The triple and double banks that I have looked at all have roughly the same depths in their drawers.

I would not need the advantages of larger drawers to contain a large amount of similar tools. Most likely larger drawers will not be physically divided up but they will definitely be organized into smaller sections for my tools.

Only you know the size of your tool collection and what amount of growth you see in that regard in your future, so personal preferences are about all anyone here can offer you.

Agreed. The more I think about it and with some of the responses here so far, I think I'm leaning heavily more towards two double banks if I can get them at close to the same price as one triple bank box

I prefer 2 boxes over one very large one. They are more flexible in terms of placement and management. With a smaller box you are more likely to theme your tools and roll the correct box closer to the job in hand. When you have one massive box it tends to stay put.

If the depth is the same you're talking about 116" vs 72" or almost 10' vs 6'. If the money is the same and I had room I'd go the 2 - 56"'s. The long drawer is only 14" longer than any one of the smaller boxes.

i'm in the multiple smaller boxes crowd...

for me, it means i can move/ re-arrange as my needs change.
i have more than a few tools in my 19x22 garage.

i dont move my boxes in the garage, i have a couple carts to use.
