I haven't torn apart a smog pump before, I have always gone the lazy way & swapped them with a reman unit. :D So it's interesting to see what kind of guts yours has.

Anyway, looks like you caught that one just in time, nice job on the rebuild!

PS, sorry to hear about your MIL's passing.

Thank you,
Wife seems to be doing a little better.

I hope he's ok. I've sent him two PM's now, one about six weeks ago and another about two weeks ago and no response.

He was very active on another forum in which we had communicated about why he left and was quite active here immediately after but then hasn't replied in quite a while to anything. I've seen he has been on the site recently so I'm worried that someone has pushed him away.

I like and value his contributions, again I hope he is alright. I got excited when I saw his thread active again this morning.

I just sent him a text, hopefully he's just busy or taking a break.

EDIT: He's alive and well and now that I'm out here in his world, we'll be hopefully getting together in the near future.

Two things I love the most about this forum. The first is finding a thread I haven't seen before and just getting lost in the story. The second, and more important, is the absolute sense of community. It's funny that when a member makes regular post it becomes such a routine to see what amazing things they have accomplished lately and not hearing from them becomes basically a disturbance in the force.

A big thanks to those who were concerned and checked in on him. We are our brothers keeper.

Paco, I just finished your thread, it's amazing! I'm not sure how I've missed it before, but I'm subbed now.

Gentalmen,
Thank you very much for checking in on me as I have been absent for a while as I have not been spending time online. I have found myself in a bit of a slump since last year after some drama on a different forum. I have never really experienced anything like that prior and found it difficult to resolve as I was simply banned without recourse. I was able to bid farewell to many friends before being completely erased. My content remains but my avatar info simply states deleted. To the credit of the new management team, they did reach out to me but its impossible to reinstate my entire contributions. I share this with you not to drum up the past but as an honest reason as to why I've been absent. I have lost five friend recently to cancer and other health issues and my banning felt like loosing hundreds of friends. Now I'm no snowflake and probably too bullheaded to simply move on, but what was initially a gut punch turned into anger and so I hit the pause button and weeks turned into months and for that I apologize. I now realize I have done the same with my absence.
At 56, I'm still learning s#@t about myself.

Motoman1100 has it right! We are our brothers keeper.

Thank you my GJ brothers.

Absolutely no need to apologize, Paco. I was just thinking of you the other day and was hoping you were OK. Take all the time you need to sort things out. If you need help, we're here. I'm even closer if you need some assistance; just say the word.

Be well.

My wife's Silverado grocery getter and hell hound hauler 1500 has developed some nuisance leaks. We'v owned the truck since new in 2000. I have been the only one to service this rig so I know it well.
The fist order of business was to pull the transfer case and install a case saver. At first I thought I had pump rub on the magnesium case half but it turns out it was a bad sealing surface.
I ordered new output/input seals for the New process transfer case as well as the pump rub fix kit. I made new seal drivers with material on hand. Some aluminum and some Delrin.
Next up was to tackle a jig that would assist in supporting the transfer case for removal/installation. With a bad shoulder I need all the help I can get while working alone.
The entire jig was made from scraps found in a five gallon pail. All the bent pieces where already bent, I simply put together a puzzle.

This is the output shaft seal for the Dmax transfer case.

Other seal press tools from Delrin.

The set for both the 1500 Silverado and the 2500HD Damx.

Ugly but effective (like me hahah) is the jig to support the removal/installation of the New process T-case.
attachment.php

Worked like a charm.

More to come.

Nice to see you post again, Paco. I have referred several friends to your thread here. I have been through the sudden ban before on another forum. I had the same feeling after.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss of friends. That **** is so hard.

Paco,
Glad to hear you are doing OK. Nice job on the seal installers and the bracket to support the transfer case, that worked out awesome. I'm hopefully going to get started on my building in Caldwell soon, I can't wait to have it done so I can work inside with lift and tools.

If you ever need a hand, hit me up. I pass by you in Brenham all the time going back and forth to Houston. I'd be glad to lend a hand. My current projects are rehabbing a Ford 3500 tractor with loader and backhoe and rehabbing various ATV's while looking for employment in the I.T field.

Amazing work as usual Paco.

Your attention to detail if even for a holding fixture is second to none.

Glad to see that you are well and we're hear for ya if you need to vent. That truly is one of the best things about this forum is the brotherhood and watching out for one another.

I only hope I can get the opportunity to meet you as well as many other friends that I have made on this forum. So sorry to hear that the other forum got under your skin but it truly is their loss as what you bring to the table as far as knowledge, experience and willingness to share is a gift.

We're hear for ya brother.

The loss of Buddies and coworkers is difficult. I suppose all the **** we have exposed ouerselves over the course of our careers takes its toll. Two of them where still into their career when the cancer cough up with them. My H.S. best friend whom was very self reliant and taught me so much now has moderate dementia. His memory from long ago is still intact, but his short term is beyond shot. I try to see him once a month over lunch and he's happy most of the time until he remembers he no longer is allowed to drive. Life is short so live it up!

The brotherhood is second to none for sure.
I have plans on seeing you beautiful state when I begin the next chapter of my life.....Retirement from the comfort of an RV. You better believe I'm going to look you up as well as others. As far as the forums goes, I always learn from them as well. Heck, I learn more than I contribute for sure. You're one of my mentors man, believe me.

Peace

Glad to see you back Paco.

I'll second that Paco. Have missed your input on the other forum. Not really sure what all went on there, but noticed several good folks disappeared. Sorry to hear about your friends, seems as we age it's just one of those things that unfortunately goes with the territory. Have had two rough years myself, but things are looking much better, and starting to get back on track. When you hit the road in your RV would be honored to have you stop by our place also. Just a few hundred miles down the road from the other Mike (Z motorsports) in CO.
Cheers, Mike

Glad to see you back Paco.

I too have taken a break or two from forums I visit every now and then, it helps refresh the mind.
Thanks Mac,
I think perhaps the break was beneficial as reconnecting with you fine folks has lit a fire in my soul.

Hey Mike!
Great to hear from you!

Hey Cam,

Welcome to Arizona!

I was catching up on Mike's (Zmotorsports) thread and read his generous offer to use his space. I offer the same to you. Sometimes a break from work to create or simply preform maintenance on your rig can help your soul. Please don't hesitate to ask.
Oh, and thanks for the text message, that was a welcome's surprise and beneficial to my soul.

Well I'm glad to see you back and more excited you're ok. Unfortunately sometimes the opportunity to never shake hand with someone escapes us far too soon. Like yourself and unfortunately too many others were at an age were one day...friends and family leave us too early.

And I certainly understand taking a break. I've done it several times as well as just flat out walk away and never return. It ain't a bad thing

With the T-case removed I then split the two haves for a good cleaning and inspection. I was pleased to confirm the leak wasn't from a pump rub issue found on many New Process. The rig has 227,*** miles and all the bearings looked to be in excellent shape. It pays to service your investments.

As mentioned, the inside was unremarkable aside from the copious amount if dried sealant found around the pump's pick up strainer.

attachment.php

The pumps (aluminum) four ears have been known to rub a hole through the softer magnesium cases from 1997-2007 New Process cases used on GM's. The cadmium plated part is the case saver, it has a 90º tab at each ear for the aluminum, pump to rub on vs the softer case. I did have slight signs of ware on two spots.

Using one of the seal drivers for the output shaft seal. I also replaced the ****** input shaft seal and front diff output seal.

attachment.php

Ready for reassembly, I used the "right stuff" sealant in a pressurized can for good control.
First time for me as I have always used a tube.

attachment.php

Reinstallation went fast and smooth with the jig. It took about 20 minutes to marry the T-case and ******, refill, install the drive shaft and make all the electrical connections.

attachment.php

Next up was to tackle a front axel 1/2 shaft output seal leak on the drivers side.

Well thankfully that trip went well for you, damn shame there wasn't time to grab some lunch. But soon enough I'll definitely be in your neck or the woods. This dang job has me covering the entire state and then some. Right now I'm in Denver catching a flight back into Phoenix just to hop in my truck and bail back home for a day.

And I'll make sure to wear my glasses so I don't miss nuttin! :p

So I had an interruption on the Silverado. It seems the shop air compressor was running longer to recover than I remember. A quick investigation found the head gasket was leaking.
I decided this couldn't wait tore into the repair.

With the new gasket and all bolts and mating surfaces cleaned I was ready to reassemble.
I also chase the threads prior to reassembling and used hi temp spry-on sealer.

attachment.php

attachment.php

attachment.php

Working from a ladder and a bad shoulder, I was concerned getting the award head aligned without mucking up the new gasket was a good possibility. I made a couple of guide pins from
some long bolts. Parted off the hex heads and chamfered the ends. This made it much easier to index the head without struggling on a latter and exposing my shoulder to the cantilever load.

attachment.php

Torqued to 50 ft/lb. and reassembesed the rest of the goodies.

attachment.php

Notice the hour meter on the electrical control box. Did I mention I was a Maintanace freak?

attachment.php

Back to the Silverado.

Moving forward, the Silverado front axel drivers 1/2 shaft seal was leaking. I also wanted to address the oil pan leaks and while I was under there rebuild the entire front suspension. None of the leaks where dripping yet but it was a matter of time. The oil pressure gauge was also flickering erratically and the rig had a slight knock on cold startup for about 15-20 seconds.
It resembled a lifter knock but I couldn't quite pinpoint the source as it would resolve. I had read about the piston slap these 5.3 where known for, but the rig burned zero oil in a 3-4 K oil change intervals.

Here she sits with 227K miles. She has only had the front end aligned once in her life with excellent tire wear. She has had three set of Michelins and has always driven straight. I did the brakes for the first time when she had 202,***. The engine has had two H2O pups, one alternator, two knock sensors, and four batteries. General prventative maintenance of course.

attachment.php

After removing some components, the axel is ready to drop out.

attachment.php

The sweating leak can be seen on the right end.

attachment.php

Using the same scrap source. another jig was made to pull the front axel without any help or pain to my shoulder.

attachment.php

The jig worked nicely , the 100 pound axel came down with smooth control.

attachment.php

After cleaning it up the flange shafts where pulled and new seals installed.
I also benched checked the actuator.

attachment.php

attachment.php

With the front axel done and out of the way, it was time to pull the oil pan.

The oil pan was fairly straight forward, but the starter removal and electrical cabling where a PITA.

Here you can see evidence of a sweating pan gasket. It would form a slight drip but mostly just make a mess down the driveline.

The new gaskets and oil pump pickup O-ring. I'v had pretty good luck with Rock Auto so long as you verify your part numbers prior to pulling the trigger.

We purchased this rig with 12 miles on the odometer back in 2000. I have always used Moble 1
full synthetic and a Bosch oil filter. The message center on the dash indicated when to change the oil depending on ambient temps towing etc. That said it would indicate service between 3K-4K and never went more than the latter. I was pleased to see zero sludge build up.
and with one treatment of Purple power degreaser, she's liked new with no scrubbing required.
Notice how the original (crushed) gasket is riveted in two places.

I riveted the new gasket in place as well to keep it indexed. Applied a dab of hi-temp RTV to the four corners where the pan meets the front pump cover and rear main seal.

The green oil pump pick up tube O-ring was flat and I suspect that was the cause for a fluctuating oil pressure gauge. The new and improved version comes in red. A dab of Vaseline
and the tube went back in with what felt like a dynamic seal.

Nice job on all that Paco. What are you using to clean everything, it all looks new. I've used power purple many times but even using it along with my high heat pressure washer rarely get results like that. And one last question, how long did it take you on the transfer case. I've got to do the one on my wife's ride before we really start the moved. It's got a couple minor weeps, thankfully they're only bad enough to just stain and not drip.

Crazy how clean that is compared to trucks around here.

Big,

The rigs in southern Arizona seldom rust. Items like rubber boots, bushings etc. are effected negatively from the summer heat. Coolant flushes and cooling stack maintenance is a must especially if towing.

Thanks Cam,
On the pan Purple power alone followed with hose pressure only. On the front axel the built up muck was pre soaked with Citrol followed by purple. I do have a aqueous heated parts washer but it wasn't used on these parts. The purple if left on too long will dull any shiny aluminum so I won't presoak with it on newer parts.

On the transfer case, I pulled it out in 45-60 minutes (after jig was made) took 3 hours to clean, split clean/inspect inside and install the pump rub kit and replace all input/output seals.
Reinstallation was under an hour. Not dealing with rusted bolts saves time. call it 4.5-5 hours including refilling. If your case is not rubbed through, I would drive it and bring it here for the kit install. Merchant makes a real nice kit for $120, but a simple Adapt-A-Case laser cut fix ran me $23 and the seal kit was another $40 for three seals and a ******/T-case gasket.
The Auto Trac II runs $7/qt. What year is your wife's rig?

Unfortunately I’m painfully aware of the dulling effect of PP. I blew a power steering pump out on a road course one day in my show quality street/race car and that’s all the local parts joint had for cleaning. You just can’t imagine how I felt as I watched all the polished and anodized finishes melt away when I hosed it off.

Thanks for the timeframe, looking at it I figured a days work. And I’m telling ya, your most generous offers of helping might be taken up on. So be careful ;)

And her toy is a 03 highly hated (here at least) H2.
