Dang Paco you’ve been blowing out some work bud, nice job as always. I had to snicker at the front plate mount. I’m not a front plate guy and have paid my fair share of ************ tickets because of it. When I registered my truck out here a couple weeks back I danced a little jig when the girl at the dmv or whatever you guys call it handed me ONE plate...hehe, whatta win.

Btw, I was almost in your neck of the woods today. I had to be in Florence early but then had to haul **** back into downtown by 1 for a meeting.

Back in 85, my wife and I had the second Iroc Z in Tucson. I ran Center line champion 500. It was sweet and the tune port injection with hyper tech chip made it fairly quick for its day. Anyhow, Az was a two plate state back then and I refused to run a front plate on that car. I lost track of the tickets I was issued over the years. It was always DPS (highway patrol) that enforced that stupid law. My son is single and way more frugal than I was as a young married man. He's probably smarter ;) .

On the work, I have been busy as I'll more than likely be out of commission fairly soon. My left shoulder is gonna require more work as it's not ever been right since the last time they cut on it. Trying to get ahead brother.

Not sure if my BIL is still involved with DOC, but he was pretty high up in the food chain and answered to the Governor. Maybe have lunch with his soon, I know what he likes hehehe.
Florence is closer than Phoenix but still an hour away from me. Keep me in the loop.

Paco,

All I can say is wow. I am in the process of building my own place and will be re-reading this entire thread to get some good ideas. I saw something early on in the thread that I wanted to ask you about. It is your cnc plasma cutter. I have one also (not quite as large) and the part I have been debating is exhausting the fumes. My building will be heated and cooled so I really don't want to simply vent the fumes outside. I noticed in the background of one of the pictures a welding fume extractor. I was wondering if you used it for your plasma cutter and if so, how well does it work?

Thanks.....
If you have any questions before, or during your build ask me. I have no secrets and will answer as soon as possible. On the plasma table, I built a 4" water table that does a remarkable job. The table is located next to a garage door for loading plates with a fork lift. That said, I keep the door open during cutting operations and set up a commercial fan to push any smoke the H2o table doesn't capture. The Aircology fume extractor is only used when welding on hazardous matirial or when I'm welding on mystery metal. Ido have a friend that runs a hopper style recovery system under his plasma table but it takes up a ton of room. The water table arrests the hot work so the treat of fire is minimal. I also ran side skirts to prevent rouge sparks.
Thanks for stopping by and again, don't hesitate to ask any questions.

Mike let me know if you end up trying a different tire on your Dmax. It sounds like you've had the same luck (good) with the BFG.
As far as your jeep, where the Nitto's any cost savings over KO2's? Those older style BFG's look way better than the new style in both the KO2 and KM2. Either way your jeep spin slicks hehehe.

Will do Paco.

As for the pricing, the Nitto Ridge Grapplers were actually a few buck per tire more than the KO2's, however, there was a Black Friday deal from Northridge on the Nitto's for a buy 4 get 1 free so that was leaning me even harder towards the Ridge Grappler, then I got an email for free freight and that sealed the deal.:bounce:

I have had them in Moab and they performed flawlessly so far, but Moab is inherently great traction so the real test will be in Ouray and South Dakota later in the year when the wife and I will be attending a couple of Jeep gatherings. The trails and rocks in both of those areas require a bit more grip and are less forgiving than Moab. I was also leaning towards the Cooper STT Pro's but again didn't want to go back to a mud tire for the pavement and winter driving aspect. I guess there's always some form of compromise. In all my years I still haven't found the "perfect" tire.:lol_hitti

Thanks Mike,

Great tire deal for sure and your assessment is appreciated. I'll be looking forward to reading any further reviews you have on the Nitto Ridge Grapplers.
Tires have come a long way and continue to morph for the better. Your quest for the perfect tire is getting closer.

Have a great Easter weekend brother

Thanks Mike I appreciate it.

On the shoulder, back in October of 2016, I tore several tendons to my left rotator cuff. I also ruptured the bicep tendon all while on duty. My fellow brothers transported me to the closed ER and this was to be the beginning of a long long battle with Workmans Comp. It took them over 35 days to finally acknowledge my injuries and delayed my surgery that in my opinion resulted in a failure. It just so unbelievable how I can be in a profession where we go above and beyond to help preserve property and save lives only to get just the opposite treatment. It took me 10 months to return to full duty and a ton of PT they call "work Hardening". Every monthly follow up with the surgeon, I would tell him of the discomfort I was experiencing during overhead activities under a load. He would document this and insist this was normal and would take more time as I ended up with five repairs to my shoulder. Eventually I returned to full duty and breezed through the physical fitness exam all firefighters are required to preform to get the blessing for full duty. This final exam also came with some discomfort and noted. Fast forward 1.5 years and now the overhead work is much more problematic and after heavy use like pulling large hose lines from the the bed of a rig or pulling other heavy equipment results in popping and pain only the pain now last for days requiring anti-inflammatory meds.
Last October 2018, I went to a Shoulder specialist and paid out of pocket to see if this was as good as it gets as I had been told by others. I also paid for an X-ray out of pocket. His physical exam showed I was positive for Hawkins-Kennedy test. A positive H/K test is indicative of impingement or tear present usually to the supraspinatus tendon. His next request was for an MRI which makes perfect sense. Armed with this I then decided to petition to reopen my Workmans comp case in hopes of them paying for the MRI. The City of Tucson is self insured and utilizes a third party to manage WC claims. Tri-Star is the name and they don't play fair. They denied me citing they didn't agree with my recent ortho MD. They informed me of my rights to petition to the Industrial Commission of AZ (ICA). I did so in December 2018. By Jan 2019 I received a packet of interrogatories along with a threatening letter from a private attorney hired by Tri-Star. I spent 40 min answering all questions and mailed it back. I then received a summons to appear for a deposition by the same lawyer.
I began to read and educate myself on the process and learned they had failed to have an independent medical examination (IME) prior to denial. This IME is hired by them and usually writes an unfavorable repot that leads to a denial.

So I'm sworn in at the deposition and the attorney is asking all sort of questions and I'm as cooperative as possible. At this point I was already scheduled for an ICA hearing for Feb 2, 2019. I then informed him of the IME or lack of, his jaw dropped when he realized I would be heading into a hearing without ever being evaluated by one of their doctors. To be fair to this lawyer, it was Tri-Star who dropped the ball for hiring him without having an IME. I actually liked this guy up to this point. He made a call and had the hearing rescheduled for March 20, 2019. While he was off record he than began to get nasty with me claiming I was dishonest and that my case was an easy victory for him. It was then he stated how he specialized in discrediting firemen that I got enraged and it took everything I had to prevent from F@%#ing this guy up. I'm not violent but this guy really pissed me off. In fact a close friend of mine was taken out by this guy last December and had to retire before he wanted to.
I took a deep breath and held it, then exhaled very slowly regaining my composure. I said to the stenographer "on record" and reiterated everything this jerk had said off the record and told him that I would no longer point out procedural deficiencies moving forward and that I would be representing myself. I began to hate this man and saw him as a parasite fueling my desire to beat him in court. The way I see it, I would still have my shoulder fixed no matter the outcome but not without a fight from me.

I had the IME on Feb 26,2019 and the Orthopedic was brought down from Pheonix and rented an exam room from a local chiropractor. WTH? lawyers and out of town doctors to avoid a $700 MRI. I actually got along well with the doc. I began to throw out all the anatomy lingo. I've been a medic for 19 years and use this verbiage often when giving report so it flowed nicely without hesitation. After his physical exam, I asked him what his take on the Hawkins/Kennedy. He looked at me and said I was positive, I told him it could be found throughout my medical records since the failed surgery. Medical records I'm confidant he had in his possession. His next words where "You need an MRI"....Really? I've been asking for this since October of 2018. The next day while at work I receive a text message indicating an MRI appointment has been scheduled on my behalf. I also received a letter from the shyster attorney indicating a missed appointment would result in dismissal. The day of my MRI I'm actually driving to my appointment when I get a call from the MRI facility stating that they have not received any orders for my procedure and that I would not be able to have it done.
I say OK but I'm still coming in and signing in to prove I didn't miss my appointment. **** now I'm thinking conspiracy hahah. Five minutes before my arrival I make a call to Tri-Star and leave a message indicating more procedural deficiencies by them and the attorney and that I would be signing in for my appointment to prove I was there and ready. I threw them another bone :(.
When I arrived the lady was laughing saying she now had four orders that where faxed one after the other. I believe these idiots expected me to turn around and blow off my appointment since I was told they would not be doing it without orders. This would have been used against me and dismissal would have been imminent.

The day of my hearing March 20,2019 09:30. Two minutes prior to the judge walking in, the defendants (city) attorney slides an eight page IME report to me without saying a word or looking me in the eye. I ask what's this and he says read it. Needless to say, I couldn't read the eight page report prior to the judge walking in to start the hearing. The judge began with the usual verbiage only to be politely interrupted by me. I apologized for interrupting and followed up by stating her valuable time is being wasted on this case as The defendant's attorney is not following the rules of discovery. I also told her of the eight page report that I had received just two minutes ago. I also told her I had not received the MRI report from a week ago and all this evidence was required for me to present my case. She looked at the attorney and asked him how long he had the IME report and his answer was "I just got it" to which I objected stating "No your honor, I just got it two minutes ago", I then asked for a continuance as I was still waiting for the MRI report. She favored on my behalf and granted me the continuance. The new hearing dat was set for April 22, 1019.

I left the ICA hearing and drove directly to the MEI facility to find the report had not been mailed out yet. I requested a copy of MRI (CD) and the report. I read the three page report to find my original MRI from 2016 showed the same Hight-Grade tears to the supraspinatus and infraspanatus that my current MRI is reflecting. This reinforced my suspicions of a reoccurring rotator cuff tear associated with my initial injury.

Another BS rule I found was any evidence/documentation must be submitted within 25 days of the scheduled hearing. This was cutting it close as I still needed my new surgeon to review the old and current MRI and report. They say the lord works in mysterious ways. check this part out. That same day (March 20) I phone the new surgeons office to schedule an appointment. As you all know it can take weeks or months to see a specialist. I'm talking with the his scheduler and she says "he's booked until.....wait, someone cancelled for tomorrow at 09:15" I said I'll take it! Now the stars are aligning up for me. This would be on a Thursday April 21, 2019. The new surgeon asks me if I wanted him to testify on my behalf and I said no thank you as It would cost you money to pull away from your practice. He said let me know if you change your mind. These cases get tricky without an attorney to represent you.
I politely declined and asked his to save himself for my surgery instead.

His report wasn't ready until the following Tuesday March 26 2019 but had to work a 24 hour shift that day. On the 27th of March I compiled 147 pages of evidance accompanied by individual cover sheets per piece of evidence in accordance with the ICA rules. This took all day as I was very careful. I then had to work another 24 hour shift on the 28th preventing me from delivering/submitting the evidence. I hand delivered the documentation on the 29 of March.

Last week I get a copy of a letter (snail mail) to the judge from the attorney requesting that all evidence I provided in the discovery phase to be dismissed due to untimely filling.
The judges letter was sent via currier while my copy was sent snail mail delaying my response time. You see the tactics here? I quickly wrote a rebuttal indicating the rescheduled hearing date was set by them and left me little time to receive the needed MRI report and my surgeons report. I also indicated I had two 24 shift in there as well preventing me from submitting the documentation. I hand delivered the letter to the judge and snail mailed a copy to the attorneys buying me time. My filing was tardy by two days and with justifiable reasons.

Yesterday, I get a phone call but don't recognize the number so I ignore it. If they don't leave a message that number gets blocked as too many telemarketers have bothered me.
Late last night after servicing my mothers car I notice a voice mail. Its around 22:45 and I'm tired but I listen to it anyway. Its from the lawyer and he's sounds so nice and pleasant, a far cry from when he went off record with me back in January. With just four days from my hearing he informs me they are rescinding my denial and a hearing will not be necessary.

Part of me regrets not taking the call as I would have loved to tell him how a a firman representing himself kicked his *** at his game and that he would not stand a chance doing my job for less than an hour.

A win is a win. I just had to share the news. Never give up on yourself and no one will take better care of your interest better than yourself.

My evidence ready to be delivered in accordance with the rules of discovery. to the right is the ICA rules. A simple clerical error will derail you case....

I will say, I pity those whom are stuck in an office for a living but then again the only threat to them is a paper cut. hahaha

Do you know why they bury lawyers 150' when they die?......Because down deep they're nice guys.....

DAMN Paco! That's a hell of an ordeal to have to go through.

Glad to hear they are at least moving forward with the procedure and good for you kicking the attorney's *** at his own game.

I wish you a speedy and stress free surgery and recovery my friend.

Holy ****!! I don't know if I could have composed myself as you did. I have dealt with my share of lawyers in the past and didn't like any of them. I think I would have gone postal on that *******. Maybe not......

Anyway, I'm glad this is finally behind you and you will be getting back to much better health because without good health, we're all in trouble.

Back on the Dmax. I flush the coolant system on both trucks every thee years to keep thing running as cool as possible. I never use tap or well water for this application. I make a small investment in 20 gallons of distilled water three 50/50 gallons and one unmixed gallon of Dex-cool. The LLY still has a petcock drain vs the newer moles and I'm grateful for that.
The process is slow but if your working on two or three projects siamotainously its no dig deal.
A) drain all coolant from rad.
B) refill with pure distilled and drive for 20 min.
C) rinse and repeat as the temp allows (this is where other projects come in handy).
D) once you're happy with the clarity of the drained water, refill with 50/50 premix and top off
with the unmixed gallon. The distilled water left in the block will provide a similar 50/50 mix
once everything is mixed well. This is also a good time to replace the serpentine belt.
Ready for triple digits.

No doubt brother, I rarely get headaches but that day my head was pounding.
Those bastards make money whether they win or lose and are profiteers of misery.
Health is paramount. :)

Sometimes the system is rigged against us on many facets and sometimes we have to choose our battles as they say. I probably would have let this slide and just given up. But when he accosted me treating me like garbage, to was on.

Its good to move forward.

Paco, sometimes the only way to get things done right is to do them yourself.
I went the pro-se route on the last post judgment motion I filed against my Ex- wife and won.

WC claims are always administered by a low life third party, they get paid based on the dollar amount of the claims and procedures that they deny.

When you change the serpentine belt on your D-Max, change the idlers too. It's good cheap insurance. I always keep a spare in the truck.

So my mom came down for Easter weekend and I finally talked her into a full service on her little Cobalt LT. I have never serviced the engine on that car as she's pretty good at having it done at Casa Grande where she lives. She's planning a trip to Puerto Pinasco Mexico along with other church members to drop off items at an orphanage. They make this trip a couple of times a year with an 8-9 vehicle caravan. The round trip is close to 650-700 miles so I wanted piece of mind. Her tires are fairly new and got a rotation and toped off with air. The engine got fresh 10W-30,oil filter, and air filter after a quick degreasing. The LT also got a top off of DOT3, Dex-cool, I gal of Rain X windshield fluid, wipers and cabin filter.
Wash and vacuumed. She kept thanking me as if it was a big deal.
I did have to part, face and bevel a 1-1/4" socket to remove the wet oil filter. The intake manifold would not allow a full size socket to fit. My Grandfather (her dad) was a master machinist in Mexico so my mother was familiar with a lathe. She liked my new machine and got a kick out of watching me make short work of that socket.

It was cool to spend shop time with my 80 year old mom.

Modifying the 1-1/4" socket.

All done including bevels.

What a story bud. There’s no better satisfaction then beating those slim balls at their own game either, keep it up and get healthy my friend.

I won’t overshare on this. But in my early 20’s I broke my neck on a job. Fast forward a couple years and many - MANY doctor visits later (both sides) one of the reports I got back from a comp doctor literally stated he doubted I ever had an operation. Never mind the fact I have a 6” long zipper scar that runs down the back of my neck.

Some of these guys are something else.

Btw, mom looks 20yrs younger then her age. Obviously you have some great dna in the linage. Here’s to a long and fruitful life Paco, now go get that dang shoulder fixed right!

Hi Cam,

Mac summed it up pretty well with the low life third party comment. Its sad how doctors can sell out.

I shared your comment with my mom, she got a pretty good kick out of it.
Thanks Cam , I hope you can spend Easter with your family.

So I tried my hand at smoking for the first time ever. I have always enjoyed cooking and grilling but this was a new adventure.

A couple of days ago we went to Costco to buy some dog snacks and walked out with a Traeger pellet grill. My wife left me alone to watch the cart to retrieve an item and returned to find me with a second push caret ;) She's banned me from accompanying her to Costco until further notice hehehe.
We assembled it and seasoned it on Thursday and today I smoked a brisket.

attachment.php

After trimming some fat and rubbing seasonings, I injected the meat with butter and broth.

attachment.php

Smoked it with hickory flavored pellets @ 225 for 4 hours until the internal temp reached 165º
Then covered and turned up the temp to 250º until internal temp reached 200º (about three more hours.

attachment.php

After resting for another hour in an insulated bag. I guess the bark looks good.

attachment.php

I guess that's a good smoke ring around the carved meat. Personally I couldn't wait to eat those jalapeños.

attachment.php

Between my wife, mom and a friend we seemed to like it. I might have enough for a sandwich.
Yum yum, I have another jalapeño.

attachment.php

I'm looking forward to building more smoked meals.

The Hypertherm Powermax 1250 began to leak air from the regulator located on the face of the machine. I took it apart to find a small hole in the diaphragm. I searched for a new replacement and quickly discovered I would look anywhere except through Hypertherm's site. Those dudes wanted over way more than the part was worth. I decided to punch in the same part number found on the OEM part on Ebay's site. Bam! I found one in Rancho Cuccamonga CA for $11.00/free shipping. It arrived last Saturday (under three days) and I through it in while the house was asleep. Its the same exact part and works as it should.

Originally, I was hoping I would find a torn O-ring causing the leak but it became clear O had a bad diaphragm.

attachment.php

Here you can see the three air lines that connect to the regulator. Top line is supply , smaller line is connected to a pressure sensor (yellow and red wire) that controls LED indicator lights showing PSI as well as allowing the unit to fire or not depending on said PSI. The lower line is regulated pressure.

attachment.php

The Hypertherm unflattering look with out her face. Top right is a amperage dial to the right of it is a three position toggle switch (expanded, plate and gouging) below are the indicator lights and blow those are the PSI indicator lites.

The new regulator installed and leak checked.

I've been running this unit since 2005 with this being the only issue so far. I did modify this unit to work with the CNC table or it can be used in manual mode. The modification included a new circuit board allowing the tip voltage (mechanical torch) to be read for the digital hight control as well as the air on/off and torch on/off to be controlled by the computers software.

Back in business for under 12 bucks and never left the shop :)

OCD similar to mine! lol

I spotted the little wood planer in the background, do you do woodworking in the same shop area or do you have a separate area for woodworking to keep the saw dust away from the non-woodworking toys?

BTW, how many gallons of coolant does a Dmax take?

Damn bobby,
that ***** man. I'm still working and have only asked them to fix my shoulder, the pain has become quite problematic with normal daily activities.

Im looking forward to a better quality if life after the surgery, but honestly, I'm not looking forward to the pain that follows the surgery or the PT. Just glad to have the BS legal **** being me. My judge could care less and offered nothing, in fact, her and the slime ball lawyer where on fist name basis during the proceedings. I had to read up on everything I could get my hands on. The States web-site claims they provide a handbook for those representing themselves at all ICA's offices....NOT TRUE! Moving forward..Turning and Burning!

Hahah, yup OCD!

I dabble in very little wood projects. I use a table saw, plainer compound saw on special projects that incorporate wood to my metal projects. I usually work outside under the shade for those projects. My love for hot work and machining takes precedence.
Also, as a home owner you need the basics as well.

The Dmax takes 4 gallons of coolant.

Got some Super bright LED tail light that resemble the factory look for the 40. Not found in the US so had to pay the shipping from Australia. Very well made I must say. I did have to fabricate a mount for them so I incorporated a guard as well. I also used a resistor for the turn indicators to get them to blink normally.

The goods.

Feeding the 1/4"x2" flat strap into the shear.

I converted the punch station into a break and set the limit switches for repeated bends.

End of stroke for a 90º.

Four identical pieces.

Test fitting the two halves.

Next up was to shear some 1/8" x 4" flat strap for the base mount.

attachment.php

Laid out the holes for the plug welded studs and the light mounts and welded the base plates.
The 4" was slightly narrower than the guard but not a problem for the MIG. .035 wire and hauled ***. Notice the penetration beads on the inside. The plug welded Studs where counter sunk and burned in hot. The inside required a flat surface for the lights.

attachment.php

Test fitting.

attachment.php

Hard to tell the guards are two piece. They where beveled prior to welding so blending still yielded a good joint.

attachment.php

The opening left by removing the OEM tail lights required the custom mounts. The two welded studs pick up the factory holes on the sides center line.

Wired in and ops checked.

These babies are bright!

attachment.php

I decided to freshen up the rear to match the new guards.

I'm happy with the results.

Pictures don't do them justice, believe me, they are brighter than this.

Nice! They look OEM. I love the 40, too. Something appealing about the simplicity of the old cars.

Thanks, they are slightly larger than the OEM and a huge safety improvement.

The lights where soldered and heat shrink used. The inside covers reinstalled for a factory look.

Here you can see the resistor and the heavy insulated cable secured with zip ties.

Very nicely done Paco. The entire back end of the FJ turned out fantastic.

I like bright and highly visible lighting. One of my pet peeves with the idiot crowds around here seems to be a trend of using dark tinted tail lights because people think they look cool. The lights are barely visible at night, let alone in the daytime. An accident just waiting for a place to happen if you ask me. That and yellowed headlights but the ever living **** out of me.

Thanks Mike,

Agreed, I like the OEM look but brighter light = safer. I changed out the original seal beam headlights long ago with H4 style lamps.

Was driving in town when I lost power steering and the brake light came on. Running short on time I pulled over and notice the alt/power steering pump belt was loose. No time to troubleshoot I pulled off the belt and drove another five miles or so to make my appointment. After the appointment I took the time to investigate the issue. Turned out the lower bolt head to the alternator adjusting bracket snapped off allowing the alt to pivot inward. Drove her home with no power steering and on battery power some 30 miles.

Pulled the cast iron lower support bracket to assess the broken bolt. its a blind hole and the bolt was a tad sub-flush.

attachment.php

I hit the bolt with a couple of tacks to build up a little.

attachment.php

Then took a 5/16 plain nut and plug welded hot.

attachment.php

Determined the size to be M10x1.5

attachment.php

I decided to beef up the bolt size to 12 MM. Located the bracket on the mill and drilled using a letter "Y".

Another angle on the mill.

attachment.php

Drilled out followed by a quick power tap. The last 1/8" was done by hand as the blind hole would have ate the taps lunch.

Reassembled and back in business. The shiny new 12mm bolt at the bottom of the bracket.

The custom made bolt :)
