Hey everyone! Looking to see if anyone has suggestions as to where to order metal (particularly thin sheets) online. I don't have a metal supply anywhere near me and something tells me that HD and Lowes don't exactly have the most competitive pricing. Thanks everyone.

Shipping is going to be rough unless it's just small pieces. I would keep looking, check with machine shops and welding shops. Every area is different but there should be some place around you willing to sell you what you need or add it to their next order.

If you figure the price of shipping, their prices are probably pretty decent. Depends on what size sheets and what thickness you need. I have purchased quite a bit from them for small projects. To me its just not worth the hassle of ordering online when I can drive down the street and have it in my hand in 15 minutes.

Like the others said though, check with some welding or fabrication shops to see if there is a local supplier. I cant imagine any type of decent size town or city not having somebody nearby.

What type of metal?

What thickness?

What size?

How many pieces?

I ordered sheets of plastic from McMaster Carr and the shipping was much less than I expected and cheaper than other online quotes.
The sheets were just sandwiched between two pieces of stapled cardboard making for a very thin package.
I would give them a try.

I have had good luck with Speedy Metals for small quantities. Depending on what you need, you may be further ahead to see if you can find a local supplier. Sheet can be tough to ship.

I have to believe there is a sheet metal, HVAC or welding shop somewhere near you that has what you want or can order it on their stock truck.

I've always purchased from McMaster Carr too.. What is even more amazing to me, no matter what size or shape it is, it always seems to arrive the next day .. I ordered some aluminum angle 6 or 8' long and it came to me, in a shipping tube, next day.... for about $20. So, again depending on sheet size you may be ok with MC for small stuff. I agree with the others, its often common for welding and or fab / HVAC shops to have extra "scraps" around that they will sell. Also, if your fortunate to live near a scrap yard that does metal recycling, they may have some too (many crane operators are paid to spot and ****** usable scraps / shorts for resale instead of sending out to be melted down..). Good Luck!

McMaster will almost always be more expensive. Their specialty is breadth of selection, Amazon's is logistics and cutting cost. So while Amazon doesn't carry everything that McMaster does, it is cheaper and ships free.
