Only one bulb works in 4 ft fluorescent light?

Anytime a known good bulb or many don't light, replace the ballast. Home Depot has them for cheap. Electricians always want to voltage test but as a building engineer, if it works one day and nothing the next is always the ballast

that's a bold statement.

Something to consider, convert to LED. WAY Better lighting, and you bypass the whole ballast mess entirely.

I bought these http://www.aliexpress.com/item/4ft-...igh-Super-Bright-18W-20W-22W/32279074267.html direct from China. Ended up being $6.oo a piece, shipped.
To say I am impressed with these (qty 26, in 13 fixtures, over a standard 2 car garage), is an understatement.

It took something like 19 days to process my funds before they shipped. But once they finally shipped, it took about 4 days to get here. Took another 3 hours to swap all 26 bulbs. 28 watt, clear, "white".

I'm now considering buying another box of 30 bulbs to split with friends who don't need 30.

You should be aware that lower cost LEDs are not usable in direct voltage. Make sure the LEDs you use in DIRECT HOOKUP are meant for that. You won't be happy if you stick a low cost LED into a 120 volt hookup....believe me.

I just went with 12 CFL lights in my garage. If one goes bad, I just replace it. Takes about a minute to replace one, they are quite inexpensive, and the CFL's work very well. But so far, after about 5 years, none of the CFL's have quit working. I shouldn't have said that, one will probably go bad tomorrow.
