I'm looking to buy another open barrel crimper, last one grew legs. I need 10 ga capacity

I can order one.

I was wondering if anyone within 1-1/2 hours of Clifton, Illinois, might have one to sell.

A lot of places have the Klein crimper, but nobody has the die VDV205-036 to go with it.

My last open barrel / bare terminal,/ relay terminal crimper was a Greenlee.
It didn't have dies, but it worked

I have a couple of Chinese ones that came with multiple dies. TO ME, theirs not too much difference between them, and I have purchased other dies from other makes (including ones that are sized/shaped like the Kleins), and they have worked in the tool. I don't know for sure, but I think most of them are "cloned" from the same tool (not sure what the original may have been.

Companies like Iwiss, etc. have proven to be fairly reliable/robust. With even companies like Klein sourcing from Chinese/Taiwan manufacturers these days, I wouldn't doubt that they come from the same factories.

I go to the T E Connectivity (TYCO) website and figure out which part number dies I want for my crimp frame (used from eBay)

Then I copy and paste it into eBay search and save that search with notifications switched on and wait for them to come up at the right price, quite often you will find people selling barely/never used frames with dies from contract jobs.

It's a bit of a chore figuring out what you actually need, but you can save hundreds of dollars and get top quality tooling.

And don't forget some of those cavities are for the part of the barrel that goes around the insulation.

I have a Mac Tool crimper very similar to the Sargent 1028 referred to. The Mac crimper 1028 is no longer available. I suspect the two are identical.

I do mostly DIY automotive electrical work on British vintage vehicles.

I have several ratchet type crimpers, but more often end up reaching for the Mac because of the control it gives me. I can see how the terminal is responding to the crimping process.

I use mostly uninsulated open barrel terminals and stay with TE brand as much as I can. Nevertheless, I find that different terminals respond differently to a ratchet type crimper.

Actually mine IS the MAC crimper. I got it way back in 1999. I remember waiting for several weeks for it to come in. It's still the exact same crimper as the Sargent 1028 though. It even says TCT1028 right on the handle. That tool will make factory style crimps. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference. It's not ratcheting, but for the quality of crimps it puts out, it's amazing.

Since you guys do this a lot, do you have a recommendation for an open barrel crimper that will do 10 ga connectors?

I about ordered both. I really don't do enough to justify spending money on 2 crimpers.

The Waytek is similar to the Greenlee I had

Not so much. It doesn't seem to play nice with 10 ga connectors. Which is all I've used so far - other than the 6 ga connectors that my other crimper worked fine on

The Wirefy doesn't seem to work well with 10 ga connectors. I have used heat shrink and bare relay terminals so far. It didn't work well with either

What exactly are you working on?

Most of my crimp tools are Metric, Engineer Tools (Japan) make some really nice open barrel crimpers but not sure they would go up to 10 AWG.

I've got a pair of Knipex non ratchet style that work well on regular open barrel terminals with insulation grips.

For the style with silicone seals (for multiplugs on vehicles) TYCO Supa-seal crimpers work really good.

Installing a starter relay, start er and new power to the load center on my truck.

I'm getting everything crimped, but not with the dies shown. The crimper for the non insulated terminals seemed to work on the 10 ga. Relay terminals.
But not as advertised. It was definitely not a one step process.

Maybe I should have bought them instead of the Wirefy.

I thought the Wirefy looked like a better option with all the extra dies.

I'm thinking the problem might be my connectors.

I used a different brand 5/16 heat shrink eyelet today and it worked fine on that one.
Maybe the other brand I have is slightly oversized or heavier gauge

Terminals are cheaper than crimpers. I like Sherco, they sell a LOT of quality products. All of my wire comes from them. They have most color combinations for my use cases. And its all domestic manufactured wire!

I have the Wirefy. I'm honestly skeptical that the crimper or dies are the issue. Sorry. I haven't used mine for anything as heavy as 10 ga, but what I've used it on, it does beautiful crimps; like OE. And pretty much every brand uses the same basic, or identical, ratcheting plier and dies; the dies interchange between most brands. So, again, I'm very skeptical that this is a tool issue.

Are you guys insane? There are plenty of various style ratchet crimpers with 2 0r 3 sets of dies on Amazon for less than $20. Yes they are almost all Chinese but they have worked very well for me. I can't afford USA crimpers.
