Open garage door reminder

So I tend to work around the house and in the process will open the garage door up for one item or put something in the garage and walk away with the garage door open. Since I sometime go back into the house via another door. I'll forget that the door is open.

So I've figured I'd ask if anyone here has a garage door is open reminder in use and what exactly are you using and how it's hooked up.

I know I should make a walk around but sometimes I'm just in a rush to get things done and forget.

JK but not really. I don't forget very often though. There's just too much stuff in there that I don't want wandering eyes seeing so I am pretty good about closing it.

liftmaster system.
Not only tells you if and when it is opened or closed it allows you to open or close it remotely.
many people with 8500's have this system but it fits on all[?] new liftmasters.
It controls lights and outlets also.

This. I have it setup on my 8500 opener with the internet gateway so after 10 minutes I get an email telling me the door is left open. If I'm out working in the garage all day with the door open it just sends the one email so it's not a bother. If I've gone to work or wherever and it's open I can just pop onto the site from my phone and close the door remotely.

Also handy is the light switch they make...I replaced my outdoor lights switch with it so now I can turn the lights on/off from both the internet and even the opener in my vehicles. It's quite nice driving up to a dark house and being able to click on the outside lights from the car.

I have a 10 y/o, so don't need a reminder, I assume it's always open, LOL. That android app is a great idea have to look into it.

My uncle has a system in his house that illuminates a red led in the house. He has one light in the kitchen, and one in the bedroom.

I've seen some where people have put the red LED inside the ceiling fan fixture, so it glows to remind you.

This is what they have in the liftmaster control panel for alerts on the door...you can schedule time of day as well if you're working out of the garage during normal hours, but 24/7 is simpler for home.

My local police department once called me in the middle of the night to inform me that my garage door was open, when I got out of bed and dressed, I found the officer waiting for me.

They really take "Protect and Serve" to heart.

This is what installed at my place and it works pretty well. It actually wasn't very good when when I first put it in a few years ago (the app that is, the opener works well) but since then they added auto login and cleaned things up.

You can set different rules as well if you want; I have a rule that notifies my on my phone if the door is left open (I have it set to push notifications, but you can choose to use email).

I used to have the opener set to auto close if the safety beam or motion detector hadn't been tripped after 1 hour. it worked well depending on what i was doing, but sometimes got to be a pain, so I disabled that option..

Because sometimes blowing leaves or snow will fool the sensors and make the door go back up, I made it a habit to never walk out of the garage before watching the door close all the way. Also, my garage faces the alley and there's a fair amount of foot traffic there (I live in the inner city) so I never leave the garage open and unattended. If you do it enough, it becomes second nature and you don't have to think about it.

I believe this has been discussed in the past on this forum.
Any how, I installed a line voltage limit switch on the header above my door. This powers a small light fixture I installed in the ceiling of a hallway, I have a CFL red bulb in the fixture.
When the door is 1/2" above the sill the light goes on and stays on until the door is fully closed.

I'm fortunate to live in a dull, uneventful, safe neighborhood, but it's my nature to close the garage door even if I'm just going around to the back yard for a minute or so. Just paranoid, I guess. My garage is my workshop, cars rarely venture inside. I feel better not having strangers driving by & seeing my machines, tools, etc., on display.

Having said that, I can see the benefit of having some kind of alert, indicator, monitor, etc. I've thought about looking into an add-on for our Genie opener, if there is such a thing.

I'm following this. My main garage door is not an issue, but the lean to built off the back of the garage has a 9x7 garage door on the opposite side of the house. Only installed it a year ago and have left it open a lot. I'm not putting an opener on a shed though.

I think my short term memory is screwed up. I sometimes get 2 blocks from home and can't remember if I closed the garage door. I turn around, go back to check and it's always closed.

My neighborhood isn't that "High End"; not only do they tolerate my living amongst them, nobody has ever complained about the noise I make.

Seriously, we all get along pretty well. This has to be, one of the best small towns that are right across the bridge from a big city.

The best protection anybody can have is a nosey neighbor, no someone who gets into your business, but who knows what is normal and will call you if they see something that isn't.

To get a good neighbor, be one.

I don't think I would want my garage door or a lock or any entry to my house exposed on the internet (via an app or website). This is just asking to be hacked. Then of course I see anyone online as hackable.

One other issue I see with this is the fact that it can be fairly easy to open a garage door that only has the opener securing it. Mine could be easily opened if you simply slip a coat hanger through the top and found the release rope. Or with a pry bar probably. I slide a metal slide lock through the side rail if am going to be away. But I could still do that I suppose.

I have a MyQ opener, downloaded the app, but I don't have a 10 digit serial number. Mine is 12 digits long and it won't take it
