So long as the cabinet rests flat against a wall, and is not heavily loaded I do not see an issue. If you plan on loading it heavily, a back to the cabinet improves the stength. If stuff can fall out the back though, that is no good.

Im guessing you're mounting these cabinets against the wall. In my garage with exposed studs, yes, backs would be a good idea. (I even put plywood backs on open shelves so things didn't fall off the back side into the stud cavity). If you've got a inside wall that is dry and stable, as long as the rest of the cabinet is going to be secure and stable enough without a back to hold what you're putting in it, go for it!

Even against a flat wall seems like small , thin , or flat pieces can fall thru, Speaking from experience. Plus as other stated the back ,even thin 1/4 ply gives tremdous strength to a cabinet.

A 1/4"plywood back will help keep the cabinet square and prevent "racking".

For the small additional cost and labour , it's well worth it in my opinion.

What is your feeling, lots have been saying I am going to be sorry, if I don't put backs on my garage cabinets.

The Garage cabinets by GSC that you looked at are designed to NOT have any thing on the back...all open backs against finisned garage wall. Only time I know of anything being used was where the wall was open to the studs. Backing on my cabinets would have added nothing, and been a waste of time and $$$. Don't know about other brands

I did not have backs installed on my slidelok cabinets. No problems at all with that choice on my part.
