Completed my 22 X 32 shop, I like the clean bright look it has now before all my tools move in :)
I was going to build open wall racks for spray paint cans, oil bottles, etc,, to keep it organized and neat. I am thinking maybe I should build the racks as cabinets that close to keep the clean "feel"??
worth it or not?

Sliding doors. I have too much **** on the floor at times to open cabinets along floor. I just removed the doors. Wish they just slid side to side.

Menards sells steel doors for the gorilla racks, or whatever they call them now.

They really make the shop look less cluttered.

There is no side or back, though, if that's important to you.

I like open shelves that you can see what in on them.
I do use labeled boxes, milk crates, 5 gal pails, etc. on them.

I have to have everything out in the open.
If I put it behind doors or in a drawer I can never remember where it is.

Open is fine for containers....but otherwise, closed.

At least in my case....I do a lot of woodworking....

Depends on what effect you like in a garage and if you crave neat and clean or clutter doesn't bother you. We just got our final inspection on our three car build yesterday and are now in the outfitting stage. I like neat and clean and am not fond of pegboard tool racks, open shelves to display all the necessary things we all need and general "stuff" hanging all over the walls. Therefore, I chose to go with closed cabinets. However, I am an antique car hobbiest and not someone who works daily on bigger and generally messy projects like full restorations, engine/transmission rebuilds etc.

I have two friends who have large garage/shops. One has a pristine three car garage, neat and clean with everything in its place. Even has carpet runners between the cars. He builds cars from the ground up and they are supurb. The other guy does total restorations on mostly muscle cars and the cars he turns out are flawless. However, his shop is a disaster with clutter everywhere and no work surface left without something on it. Plus, everything is filthy with dust from sanding covering everything. But, he knows where everything is and loves working in his shop.

So, what you choose to do in your garage is totally up to you and what you like and are comfortable with. It doesn't matter what anyone else on the forum thinks about what you shoud do.

It all depends on what you are using the space for.

As previously eluded to, if you do lot's of woodworking, sanding, grinding or any "dirty" work at all, open shelves become filth shelves.

I have wall and base cabinets in the working area of my shop, a dividing wall to isolate the working area from the storage area, and open shelves in the storage area.

I really like the "ultra clean" look,, but I think if everything was behind a cosed door, I would forget where it is, or what I have :)

Closed, regardless if you do woodworking or any other hobby. Keeps dust and debris out.

I learned, the hard way, that keeping everything closed is way safer, cleaner and better looking. It is also easier to clean up after messy work.

On the safer issue...if you weld...molten steel can go everyware...including into open shelves with combustables...ask me how I know.

Also, I was pumping oil out of the fill tube in my boat...and sprung a leak...oil shot out of the fill bucket and all over that set of closed up shelves in one of the photos above. If they were open that would have taken days to clean up...I needed to only clean off the face of the cabinets...

Close them up...you will like it better...at least that is my experience...

Yea i am the same way plus when i have a lot of cabinets then i have a tendency to just "close the door" to hide the mess and clutter instead of dealing with it because when the cabinets are closed it looks neat and clean

Personally i like a combo of both. A couple cabinets for the clean stuff (car wash stuff) but open shelves for stuff that i dont care about getting dirty spray cans, fluids, oil etc

Made this cabinet today. It is 1x4x3' tall with sliding doors and will be hung from the ceiling with threaded rod. I have 6 more to make and this will free up some floor space.

Well looks like the pics didn't work. I will try again later. I like to have my cabinets closed as I do lots of woodworking and the dust can get bad at times.

If you have shelves, just put rubbermaid containers/storage bins on them...keeps everything sealed and clean.

I made these out of 1'x4' metal shelves and they will hang on the walls keeping everything off the floor. Sliding doors make it easier to access items while on a ladder. I also will make some that are 2' deep for larger storage boxes. I prefer to have my cabinets closed to keep the saw dust out and it also gives the garage a cleaner look. Still have to decide on either painting them or applying stain.
