Opening Ryboi chainsaw

Ryobi chainsaw malfunctioning. Perhaps the motor burned out (every time I put a battery in, then pull the trigger, the chain moves for a fraction of a second then stops). Whatever it is, I'm trying to open it to investigate. Does anyone know how to get this semi-circular clip (see image on top of motor) off or what tool to use to get it off? I try to use pliers but to no avail; there's a lot of tension on this clip. Chainsaw is P2502 18V, 10inch bar, brushless.

Maybe you need to check if there is something wrong with the chain and tighten the chain

Starting with the most obvious, is the chain brake set in the run position? Check by moving it forward and back.
Check tension of chain. Should be hardly any sag at the bottom, but easily turns by hand
Bar and chain oil full?
