Is there any requirement for the size of the opening in the ceiling to get to the wiring vents etc?

I'd prefer to just box in a spot between 2 joists, I can easily fit between as opposed to cutting one of the joists and doubling up the ones on each side.

This is the standard approach for attic access. However, in most non-used attics, the trusses are spaced at 24 inches, so the opening width is about 22.5 inches. This should work fine. If your trusses are set at 16 inch spacing, it might be tough to get into the attc.

I am looking at some of the pre made fold up stairs or ladder from Lowes to get up the attic of the garage I am building. I think the opening to install those is 22 X 54
