So I'm finally doing it and building a shop/garage. It will hopefully be just over 500sqf but will have to be long and narrow not square.
Currently I have a fragmented in carport that once the shop is built we be opened back up and the I can reside the house.
I have a full car width on the outside of the carport to allow access to my back yard.

1. Size? Was thinking of 22x24 (possibly 26 long if the city approves the overag). But what about 18x27?
2. Shop/ garage door size? Was thinking 8x8 this will leave me lots of wall space on each side. Figure that width will still allow me to bring in a car or truck.

This garage is more a shop for working on toys. Possibly installing a 2 post lift :D

I agree that 8' is narrow.

Go 10' if you can- if nothing else it makes getting car-sized things in and out much easier when you're not checking clearance the whole time.

If you plan on getting a two post lift, the clear bay width should be at least 14 feet. Add to that the thickness of the foundation. Make the garage as deep as allowable. Place a second garage door at the back wall.

With a 9 foot wide garage door you will have to fold in the mirrors on a pickup truck. 10 feet wide is better. 12 feet wide makes it real easy. And at least 8 feet high.
