I have been looking at lifts for awhile and am ready to pull the trigger. I was going to buy a new lift but was just offered a Bend Pak HD9-ST that has been barely used for $1300. It was manufactured at the end of 2004 but I have heard that the certification changed in 2006 on the lifts? I was just wondering if anyone knew if they had changed the lifts since then, and what everyone thought of the price?

I can't speak to any design change since 2006, but I'm pretty sure the main requirement for ALI (American Lift Institute) certification is a backup safety mechanism if the cable goes slack. I've got a 2010 model HD9-ST that's certified and the backup is a spring-loaded catch that is only effective if the primary cable goes slack. If the pre-2006 model has that feature, there may not be any difference other than the certification. I paid right at twice the price you're being offered, so it seems like a good deal if the lift is in good condition. I would inspect the cables to make sure they're not frayed and the pulleys to see if they're worn - I think they would be the primary wear items. Good luck in your decision.

Thanks for the help. I am supposed to be able to take a look at the lift tomorrow night. I will definitely take a look at the cables and pulleys.

Well, I am picking up the lift tomorrow. I talked him down a little more to help with the expense of moving it. Any advice on reinstalling it???

There are a number of thread dealing with the install. One person can do the install but two makes it easier. My tip is you can lift the ramps with a couple of floor jacks (and wood blocking) rather than an engine crane. Lift from below that is.

not hard to install, I did both of mine with two floor jacks and some 6X6 cribbing to block the ramps off the ground about 24" without any help took me about 2-3 hours each

Under $1300 is a killer deal! I installed one by myself, a great challenge to take on if you like to do stuff on your own. I also did another with 2 friends and it went a bit faster for sure.. Just work smarter not harder using jacks, 4 wheel dollies, and various blocks of wood..

Biggest advice is to lay the columns down and slide the crossbar into them then tilt them up! the book says to stand the columns up and the pick up the 200lb? crossbar and lower down in the columns to the ground. Um, no thanks.

Good luck, post up pics!!!

I recently (1 month ago) purchased a used HD9-ST located about 5hr from my home. Drove out in the morning, inspected, broke the lift down, loaded, and drove home later that night. I have been pleased with the purchase thus far.

Bendpak is running a special on the trolley lift (RJ45). Sale price now is $975.00. I don't know how long the special runs. It would be a nice addition if you are in position to do so.

Good Luck

Thanks for all the information. My father in law and I inspected the lift, broke it down, transported it and reinstalled it in my garage all in a about 5 hours. It was a fair amount of work but didn't seem to difficult. Because of the weight I would definitely recommend the more people the better. Two people can do it with the help of a jack or two.

Has anyone had their garage door redone to go up more before coming back? I had a garage door company quote the door mod but it will only get me another 18" for the lift. If anyone has had it done, did you use a jack screw opener installed as well?

that was a great deal on the lift. i just bought a 9-STX for $3,140 :scared:. how far away was the lift? i ask only because you could have put the assembled lift on a flat bed (tow truck) and moved it without disassembly. when i looked at a used lift i was quoted $150 to move it about 12 miles, FWIW. good luck, BP's are great lifts. :rocker:

yes, i did the 3800 Jack Shaft openers. mine was new construction with 13' ceilings. Lift Master 3800's are the only way to go!
