Does anyone have the 9-piece 18 volt Hitachi combo set? I have the Makita 18V drilldriver/impact white/black set, and am 100% satisfied with the performance, but this is available, new, for $450.00, which is a killer price.

Still, I don't want junk, and $450 is $450. I know the drill/driver was highest rated by Consumer reports (LOL As if..). I wanted to know your opinions and experiences with the 9 tools (Though I heard the lantern is a piece of junk).

I have had the "push" Hitachi 18v Li-ion drill/impact set for 6+ yrs now. It is a excellent set, and I really like Hitachi for their price vs quality value.

This set will not disappoint you. But.....

things to consider though:
Pros
- You can find these tools used on CL pretty cheap now (replacements or expansion).
- The drill/ impact combo is killer. Better then my new Dewalt 20v system.
- Hitachi has a great warranty- lifetime on the tools and 3? yr on batteries!
Cons
- The 18v Li-ion "push" style batteries are getting harder to find and the prices arent coming down on them that much?
- This particular line is good, but basic. The LEDs and other features arent as good as current offerings.
- Kinda seems like the newer production "push" batteries are not as good of quality?

I would jump on this if you dont mind searching for batteries and need a complete but simple tool setup.

I have the smaller set if the LiOn (drill, circular saw, recip saw) and bought an impact driver and hammer drill to add to the set.
* The circular saw is OK, but I would never have purchased it additionally. That said, I've used it a few times for some fairly minor things that I didn't expect it to work for.
* The recip saw is much larger than I expected, and I rarely use it (I have a smaller Porter Cable 12v I got for a song that I use 95% of the time).
* The drill pictured looks like the better version than mine. The one that came with my set had a pretty crappy keyless chuck that slipped constantly (I replaced it). The hammer drill has a nice all-metal ratcheting chuck that is great.
* The impact driver has some balls. Don't know how I lived without it for so long. Like every other brand I've used since, if you are driving lags, expect it to heat up quickly.
* I have a corded Hitachi ocilating jigsaw that I love EXCEPT for the ez-change blade mechanism that slips off a clip if you pull it too hard or when the blade is at its deepest. I hope the cordless model doesn't have this flaw.
* Lantern. It's OK. I see more value from the flashlight, but in a pinch it replaces a 40 watt trouble light without the hassle of a cord. It is a CFL, and eats batteries much faster than I expected.

I can't comment on the other tools.

If not refurbished, lifetime warranty on the tools, 2 year on the battery. If refurbed, search for a recent thread about the topic. I'd say that on any given weekend one or more of these tools is used for about an hour of runtime, in the summers much, much more. After 3-4 years, batteries are all still good, no issues with the tools themselves.

I have a Hitachi cordless screwdriver (which I love) currently in for repair. I have a 8 year old 14.4v NiCad Hitachi drill that got fair use/abuse that still has the initial batteries and they are about 80% of their initial full charge workload. So, yeah, I like the stuff they are putting out from a quality perspective. It may not be the absolute best in class for everything, but IMHO, it is absolutely NOT junk. I'm considering getting a bare brushless impact driver to add to the collection for some larger projects I'd like to do, but I also have a Craftsman 12v right angle impact that I got from a hot deal for $40 that gives the wife something to use when she helps out.

Somewhere nice
I got the 1/4" impact that's in that set when it was very steeply discounted, and it was okay for driving screws, but pretty underpowered and not something I was ever happy with when using it on a vehicle. These have been around for some years now. If you're comparing them to Craftsman or some other DIY-quality brand, you might be happy.
