opinions on 1/4 hex drivers

Looking at either a craftsmen combo from lowes at $99 its a drill and driver combo.
or
Bruan impact driver from HF
it's right around 70?
or anything else around the price range worth looking at.
I'm just a hobbyist so i don't need a Milwaukie or equivalent
unless i was getting it ready to go sub $100

Of those 2 you chose, I'd go with the Cman. Its a proven Stanley platform with a better warranty than the Bauer.

Ur not going to get a 2 for of tools in any pro line grade in an 18V (20v max) series for $100 even on your best Black Friday deal.

Also a single tool/single battery deal of name brand 18-20v tool red /yellow/orange/teal has been a pretty standard item during the Holidays and you could almost count on it as much as the sun coming up. Though they've been cheating that back some I remember how for a while a worklight was included for the same price

Good point was made about the Walmart and warranty as opposed to HF Braun line of tools

Lowe’s sells a Bosch 12v impact/drill kit for around 100 bucks. We use them at work, among other brands, and for the price they’re quite nice. More powerful than you’d think.

If it were me buying for just general futzing around the house I'd probably go with the Makita 12v set over the Ryobi, Craftsman or Braun. Makita's a good brand that isn't going anywhere and the 12v drivers are likely going to be smaller and lighter than the 18/20v tools. That would mean less fatigue and you can fit them in tighter spaces. Admittedly I haven't had them side to side, but it's something to consider.

If i was on a budget I’d prob go with Ryobi. The craftsman stuff does look nice - but i trust Ryobi to be far more expansive with bringing out new tools (already having more to pick from) and keeping the same battery platform. Yes, i hate the skittle green color - but it is what it is..

The more money you can spend (right now) will net you the best deals on combo kits.. there are 7 and 8 tool combo kits at half price right now, and HD will be putting out some crazy deal of the day sales, that you would have to AGRESSIVELY check everyday and pounce when they get posted. At those prices lots of people buy those big kits in multiples at a time just to break up and sell online.. $1800 kits will go for half price.. i dont expect youll be in the market for that, but ya never know. Right now you can get some killer deals online at HD

I would suggest getting into the best brand and biggest combo kit you can bring yourself to spend money on. These will likely be your cordless tools for the next 15 years.. invest wisely. I know it can be a lot to part with, but $400/$500 for something youll get at least 10 years out of (likely 15 or even 20) is really not much. I would do Milwaukee/Dewalt/Ryobi in that order.. this is one of the few times I’d recommend to think about buying everything you think youd need at one shot. It WORTH it at these prices.

Milwaukee also offers 5 years, (2 more years than most everyone else) on their tool warranty and 3 years on the battery. So basically if something take a dump almost 5 years from now, they will just send you a new one or repair minor issues. Their customer service is probably the best out there.

I bought the Ryobi set a few years ago at $99. Can say I got my money’s worth and have placed probably 20,000 screws with it. The ryobi batteries seem to fail suddenly sometimes.

I’d go for the Kobalt 24v, love my set and with a 5year limited warranty on the driver and 3 year on the battery, they’re hard to beat. Plus their batteries are some of the best made at the cheapest price

Dont trust those HD "special buys". What they do (on some stuff) is jack the price way up then slash it down to a normal price. I have seen it on generators to washers and dryers.

Lowe’s has the 8-tool Craftsman combo for 299. A very good deal. I have the brushless version where don’t have to release the chuck to insert a bit - just push it in. Very nice.

If 12V will suit your needs, this Bosch deal at Lowe's is a hell of a bargain at $99. I own both of these and have for years. I haven't used any of the real cheap brands mentioned like HF and Hart, but Bosch tools are going to last. I'm pretty sure I'm going to pick up these up and take them to work and take my much older to the house, though there's absolutely nothing wrong with my set at work.

I guess that OP has to define the major use of the type of tools inquired about, an impact driver or a drill driver/impact driver combo.

I also had to search out that Craftsman combo to see what it is, as for his self described hobbyist status I guess it do. I lot of people still like Craftsman brand no matter what.

Though the drill specs use the UWO Dewalt type of torque rating so makes it difficult to put a comparative number to it like 450-550 inlbs. Probably is in that class somewhere though, Milwaukee brushless 2801 is 500 as is the brushed 2606

Yup Bosch Makita and Milwaukee all have the 2 piece 12v kits for $99. Haven't seen HD Ridgid listed yet but its usually out there too on BF.

I do have that advertised pair of Milwaukee 12v tools myself. They are a fine set of general household tools, small and lightweight and can easily handle everyday small projects.

I actually have two of those impact drivers and for what they are 1000inlb brushed 12v they pretty powerful. One of my favorite job tools for a long, long time.

Though the 12v FUEL kit is more expensive list is like $229 (though I think I seen it back to $169 on promo somewhere recently) they are worth it and far superior tools in every aspect, totally professional grade and worth the money.

Build a deck and drive lots of screws, bore holes in dimension lumber to run electrical wire or to place pipe, go big BIG TOOLS BIG BATTERIES

Makita has a huge tool selection. I have bought tools for as cheap as $30-$40 off CPO and ebay for the Makita platform. And even brand new Makita flashlights for 18V platform can be had for like $15 off ebay.

I do side work at relatives and friends houses sometimes, and the Makita stuff can take a beating and hasn't broken. For a homeowner, they will last and last -- even if you never add other tools to the mix, at least you will have quality drills. Also DeWalt and Milwaukee have similar deals perhaps, and they are great too.
