Gentlemen,

An idea that was presented recently during one of our brainstorming sessions was a tool related product. I'd like to get the board's opinion on this idea. There is absolutely no "pride of authorship" here so all opinions are welcome.

The product idea relates to Jack Stands. To be more precise, it is an add-on to an existing set of jack stands.

The stated problem to solve is that jack stands that are used for cars are typically the smaller 2 1/2 or 3 ton variety. At full extension, they are sometimes not tall enough to use with a truck. Current solution is to go out and purchase another set of larger jack stands.

What we are proposing is a base that you can sit your 2.5/3 ton jack stand into which gives you about 4-6 additional inches of height. It would be constructed of the same heavy-gauge steel that the jack stand is made from. It would also be designed with USER SAFETY at the forefront.

The bases would be sold in pairs for somewhere around the $19.99 range

Wood blocks work even better because they grip the cement and steel better than steel on steel or cement. The awesome ones we have can be made for about 30 cents worth of nails.... And they also work as blocks as well. Not just one purpose. So I think for that price they are a waste

I would want something with a wider "foot print" the the jack stand itself for sure. It would also be a good idea/saftey feature to attach the stand to the base by mean's of clamp's or bolts.

I had been thinking about making a removable base pad (not for adding hight) to some existing stands I have, due to working on softer ground, so they dont sink in under weight.

Make sure you have good liability insurance. I bet a normal jackstand's safe using capacity might have to be de-rated when elevated by whatever means.

If a user get's crushed from an elevated jackstand failure they'll also go after you.

Me, personally, I'd rather have the larger jack stands, and I like that the larger ones are rated higher for the larger application.

So, nothing I'd be interested in. Best of luck in your endeavor, though.

I would think that this could be a better package as car and truck stands, stands with extensions. For me that would mean that being purpose built they would be the smallest possible form factor, yet I could use it for car and truck. Great idea. Just my $0.02.

There are also a lot of different sizes and styles of jack stand bases out there, so making a base to fit that all properly won't be as easy as you may think.

Not to hijack, but I welded a plate on the bottom of my jack stands to keep them from sinking in the dirt. It seems to work pretty well so far.
