Would like some input. Shop is 24 x 30. Plan is to use the 8 ft T8 fixtures from Lowes (Metalux 4x4 bulbs http://www.lowes.com/pd_163723-337-8TSNF-232-UNV-EB81-U_4294896174+4294965391_4294937087_?productId=3181905&Ns=p_product_prd_lis_ord_nbr|0||p_product_quantity_sold|1&pl=1&currentURL=%2Fpl_Metalux_4294896174%2B4294965391_4294937087_%3FNs%3Dp_product_prd_lis_ord_nbr|0||p_product_quantity_sold|1&facetInfo=Metalux). Plan to place two rows, of two end to end fixtures, one row above each parking stall and utilize the outlet wiring that's already there.

Then place another two fixture/butted assembly to the main work area going perpendicular to the the two stall rows (Where the bulb is out in the first picture)

Then, supplement the work areas with shop lights. Does that sound like enough ?

I would just swap out with some big CFL bulbs on Y splitters unless you just don't care for the look. Loads cheaper.

The 4x4 T8 fixtures from Lowes will give you very nice lighting coverage.
I used them end-to-end in my installation, connecting them with box-joint connectors.

I have a 24x30 with a white metal ceiling and I am concerned that using ten of those 8' fixtures may be overkill?

Thoughts?

Negative, fastback. I have ten of the 8' fixtures in my 24x26; It's quite nice. Still open framing, so walls/ceiling don't reflect much, but it will be great once they are white. Mine is wired on five switches, so I can control the location and level of lighting. I say go for it....
