I plan on building a deck off the back of my raised ranch Early this fall. The property is ALL hard shale. Generally here in upstate NY, a hole is dug, sonet tubes are set inside 4' deep, concrete poured in, and you have your footers for 6x6's etc.
My house is on hard shale. Before you advise to ask my local town building inspector, i will, but when he offers me my options, i'd like to know what he is talking about when he refers me to my best course of action. Also, he has been reasonable and open to suggestion in the past so i would like to know what options i may bring to his attention if the opportunity arises.
Lastly, i would like to finish the ground below my deck as well. Like a patio below the deck. I have so far considered patio pavers, stamped concrete, or a simple concrete pad. My concern is, regardless which option i choose, how do i properly finish the bottom of the 6x6 posrs that will hold my deck up against the sonet tune or what ever.
I'm thinking if i do stamped concrete, i can finish the top of the sonet tube a few inches below the top of the stamped concrete. I can drive one drill rod or rebar into the concrete of each sonet tube and pour over each tube. Once the pad is done, drill a hole in each 6x6 and set it on top of the rebar, the rebar acting as the anchor.
What i'm looking to avoid is several inches of ugly sonet tube concrete showing past the level of the patio. Trying to come up with finishing options!
Thanks all!
