Options for the walls?

This is my first real post here.

I am look for options for the walls in my garage. I want to get something the will hold up but still not break the bank. IS OSB an option??


Just to preface this I have a three stall garage with 8' ceilings. I do a fair amount of work out there. I live in MN so isolation is a big deal. There are plenty of plugs so i will not need to run wires later.

I used OSB on the interior walls of our 30x40x14 barn. I painted with 2 coats of kilz oil based primer and 2 coats of latex simi gloss. This has work good for us. I put it up with deck screws.

I'd use something that is fire retardant like drywall (sheetrock) not something made of wood like OSB. There's a post in here somewhere of a shop without sheetrock that burned down & destroyed the cars inside.

I'm aware that it wasn't OSB on the inside of the walls, it was just the exposed exterior sheathing that was exposed. My point though, is that if there was a fire retardent interior, that garage may not have been so severely damaged.

In my new garage I'm going with 1/2" CDX Plywood for the bottom 4 ft and then 1/2" drywall the rest of the way up. I think the pkywood will be a tad stonger than OSB.

One thing to keep in mind with OSB is that rodents absolutely love the glue they use to make them. My friend is an inspector and let me know this after I told him how bad the mouse infestation was in the OSB walls of my shop.

thanks for reposting that fire oldmoparz - great lesson. can't believe people still 'punch' tanks to get fuel out. If the drain plug doesn't work, just siphon it.

As far as OSB goes, it seems OK 'til you try and paint it! Drywall is just as easy and not that much more.

Do a search. IIRC.....the last thread on drywall vs. OSB was quite a huge thread. Each one has it's advantages and disadvantages depending on which side of the fence you are standing on.
