Options for vise mounting

I'm mounting a Yost 204 on my bench, which has a 1 1/2" thick maple top and is sitting around 150 lbs right now. The overall depth including the swivel base mounting tabs and the bench top is 2 1/8".

I planned on mounting the vise using 3 inch long 5/8" bolts, with flat washers at each end, and a split lock washer and nut underneath the bench. However, the bench has a couple pull-out drawers underneath, with 3/8" clearance between the underside of the bench top and the top of the drawer.

So, these are the two ideas I was working with:

1. Drop down to 2.5" bolts and put in a 1/4" (3/8"?) deep counterbore underneath the bench top. Maybe just counterbore for the single fastener that would interfere with the drawer.

2. Install 3" bolts and flat washers from underneath the bench top. Install flat washers, lock washers, and acorn nuts on the swivel base. Leaning toward this option.

Thoughts? I'm open to other suggestions.

Also, before anyone says it, I'll upgrade to a bigger bench someday, but for now, this is what fits in my two-car garage. Between two cars, a motorcycle, lawn equipment, workbench, toolbox, and shelving, the garage is prety full.

Drill your mounting holes and insert T-nuts under the table. Use bolts to secure the vise. The T-nuts work as both washer and nut.

Unfortunately it looks like those are near impossible to find in anything over 3/8".

I had a similar clearance issue, so I did your option 2. I inserted carriage bolts from the bottom, used washers and regular nuts, then cut the extra bolt protruding through the nut.

Thanks for the help guys.

Ended up going that way too FMC1959. Ordered some 2 3/4" grade 5 carriage bolts from Fastenal, and got some grade 8 yellow zinc flat washers and nylock nuts from the local hardware store. If I measured right, should end up nice and flush.
