I have one and love it! I researched helmets alot before buying,at first i was going to go with the miller autodark, but after reading many reviews that said it would only last a year or two i bought the optrel
I weld almost everyday so its works great, i'm not sure how it would work if you only did it on weekends or somthing
Some people set them outside for a couple minutes if they havn't welded in a while to charge it up
The longest mine has sat has been like 3 days and i worked fine after it

I do not have an Optrel helmet, but mine does not use batteries, either.
No problems at all.

The Optrels are nice helmets. I've been using a Miller Big Window Elite for a few years and haven't had any problems with it - also love the large viewing window it has.
I use a 3M Hornell Speedglas and have been extremely happy with its’ fit and comfort. Along with its’ auto-darkening feature of being able to change the darkness and sensitivity levels.
Spend a few extra dollars and get one of the top selling name brand auto-darkening helmets. You’ll be glad in the long run.
BTW IOC (Indiana Oxygen Company) is a great company to deal with.

I have had my OPTREL Satelite helemts for around two years and have never had a problem with them.
I replace the inner shield twice a year and the outter shield about a dozen times ( 6 a year )
I've been flashed twice when welding out of position but it didnt bother my eyes because of the UV protection they already have.
I had a Miller BWE but sold it right after , i just couldnt get it to fit right and the head gear was always coming loose , it looked nice but just didnt work for me.
The no battery solar cells on the OPTREL work great , 2 years and still going and one of my OPTREL helmets sat unused for 2 months in a helmet bag and worked great when it was taken out and used.
Its a great helmet well worth the $$ , no question.
