I'm going to order the Big Maxx 45K BTU natural gas heater from Northern Tool. I've looked through past threads, and wanted to double check... Should I just order the heater, and get my remaining installation needs (piping, thermostat, etc) from the local home center?

I ordered the accessory kit with my heater, and glad that I did so. I wouldn't want to try to figure out what I would need to buy at the home store, when the cost of the accessory kit is so little...

i ordered the vent kit that way i would hopefully have everything I'll need when I go to install it.
The price seemed good (i got it for $75, on sale from $99); i priced out stuff locally for the vent kit and it wasn't any cheaper. The vent kit was on sale at northern last week when I ordered mine. I also ordered the thermostat. Heater and vent kit should be getting delivered today! Hopefully I'll have the heater installed and ready to use by early - mid november.

i think they also sell a gas connection kit. I didn't get that. it look like it's just a 1/2" ball valve and a flex line with connectors. That stuff is easy to get locally if needed, but i'll probably end up running 1/2" black pipe right into the heater if possible.

Like Junkman and Tim, I ordered the heater and vertical vent kit, today, from Northern Tool (at the price Dipper/Tim mentioned). I did a quick price comparison at one of the home centers on the venting. The guy helping me asked 101 questions in order to help me, and part way through, I knew getting the kit would take some of that puzzle off the table.

Thanks for replying, guys.

You need to have some sort of flexible line between the hard black iron pipe and the heater to absorb vibration..

Gotta56- My heater and vent kit got delivered yesterday. Well worth it when i saw all the parts it included, it should at least save some confusion and having to deal with the "professionals" at the local big box store. Box was in good condition; hopefully yours will be too. I am very happy with the decision!

Junkman - don't see anything in the installation instructions about that, and have only seen hardline used on these types of installs. My brother has done a few and has never had a problem.

Princess Auto sells Mr Heater stuff - they list the 4" vertical for around $120 and the 4" horizontal for around $135.

That's likely. You could try calling the call center in Winnipeg, they can ship it to you.

You can just head over to Home Depot and pick up the bits and pieces, just bring your list, the help there is usually of little help, especially in Alberta.

I'm interested in seeing the pics - I'm considering installing the same heater in my shop. Good tip on getting the thimble from Wolesley.

I would suggest to any of the Canadian guys to order through Northern Tool rather than Princess Auto. I ordered mine (45,000 and vent kit) and it cost me $660.00 C shipped to my door and that was with the dollar at about $.83. If I remember correctly PA sells just the heater for $600.00 plus the vent kit $120.00 plus gst.I ended up saving about $100.00

except i got the 45k on sale for 499 a few months ago at princess auto. and by piecing together a vent kit im well under 660$
i would not order from Northern tool. Solely on the Fact that UPS was the shipper. If it had an option for Fedex or DHL i would have ordered from Northern tool.

That's a pretty good price last sale I saw they had it on for the $599.00 price I mentioned. I know UPS is usually brutal but they have a deal with them cost me $60.00 to ship included in the $660.00 and had no extra charges when it arrived. I had to call a special number for Canadian sales though.

I got a 75K and ordered the vent kit and the stat. The vent kit worked out well, was easy to install and had good instructions. The T-Stat was a piece of ****. I ended up getting a programmable stat that works very well for my purposes.

Looking at the prices you guys are talking about, I'm really happy I got mine 20 months ago!

Yup even if I got mine like 3 months ago the dollar would have been on par but I ordered mine about a week after it started to drop and then they didn't have stock so they won't charge you until they can ship so in that time it cost me 17% more to buy. Would have cost about $550.:(
