Ordered Racedeck yesterday!

Finally ordered my racedeck tiles yesterday! This is part of my summer project to do a high lift conversion on my 2 car garage, put in a 4 post lift to be able to park a third car in it, and put down the Racedeck tiles to cover my 5-6 year old Rustoleam epoxy from Lowes that is starting to peal.

The parts for the high lift conversion are on order and the local door company will complete the work hopefully in the coming week. Then I will touch up some paint on the walls and ceiling, and put down the floor. The lift will wait a few months so I will be sure to post pics in the next few weeks after the conversion and floor potion is done.

Here is the final design I think I will be going with, although I have ordered equal amounts of white, black, alloy and graphite tiles for my design so I can always make plenty of changes if it does not look correct.

I know that it is recommended to leave 1/2 - 1/4" around any wall durring install... am I correct to assume to go with 1/4" if I will be installing when it is warmer out (70 degrees) I don't want the gaps any bigger than necessary. Also, what do people use to keep this gap consistant durring the install?

i depends how OCD you are. i left 1/2" on both side walls and painted the floor (in the 1/2" where it would show) to match the stem walls. a lot of friends have seen the garage now and no one has commented on the "gap".

it hasn't been hot here (seattle area) since i installed Racedeck last fall, so i have no idea how much expansion to expect. so far i have no buckling or any other problems. this is a really great flooring system for a garage.

Thanks, this has really been a few years in the making... ever since I got a third car with only a 2 car garage... having to clear snow/ice off your car before work in the morning really *****, then in the summer it isn't any better b/c you wash your car on the weekend only to have it sit outside and get dew on it a few hours later.

My footer walls and floors are already painted with a tan expoxy that will match the tan floor tiles on the edges, so I guess the gaps will pretty much disappear. I was thinking of making several (maybe 20 or so) stacks of 4 or 5 pennies taped together and placing them every 6-8 linear feet around the edges when I do the install to keep an even gap without it shifting while I work. Sounds like a good idea to me... what did you use to keep the gap while you installed?

Pennies sounds like work. Find some old baseboard and cut into lengths or use the pennies and buy a few feet of trim that suits your needs. Whatever it is, just make it consistent

X2 on the pennies sounding like too much work. Get a 1/4" thick board or tape two yard sticks together (that should total about 1/4"). You're not going to have a hard time keeping the tiles lined up when you get started. You'll be more frustrated by learning how "out of square" your walls are. Good luck and post some pics.

will post pics for sure, hopefully install will happen next weekend. Need the garage door guy to come do the high lift conversion first. Parts were ordered last Wednesday, can't image it takes that long to come in stock. Trying to get him out to do the job (if the parts are in) later this coming week, then I can do the floor.

Just took a look at UPS for tracking info, tiles should be here tomorrow! Can't believe that it takes almost 400lbs of these things to do a 2 car garage. The plan was to put them in the basement and start to put some of them together in the planned design prior to going into the garage, but I am not sure I want to carry 400lbs of tiles up and down the stairs

Update:
Spoke with the garage door company yesterday and the parts are in. They will be doing the high lift conversion on Friday, then I can patch up the wall / ceiling holes, do some touch up painting and lay down the RaceDeck this weekend

Update2:
Got all of the tiles in the house and down to the basement. I wanted to double check that all the correct # of tiles / colors were there as I was ordering odd amounts. Happy to say the order was perfect. I started breaking the tiles apart and re-constructing the 2x2 squares to create my pattern on the center of the floor. I must say, the colors look great together and I can not wait to get this stuff in the garage and all finished. Pics to come by end of weekend!

Got the floor installed today Took about 5-6 hours total with all the trimming around the edges for me to do the 2 car garage myself. Not too bad. High lift conversion was done yesterday. I will have more pics once the lift gets installed next month! For now... here is the floor!

1 week old and still loving the floor. Problem is I have already sweeped / mopped it twice in a week becuase it looks so good I want to keep it that way... hopefully this is just a phase and I will be okay with dirt as time goes on.

Pulled up the entire back and left edge and re-cut leaving a larger gap to allow for expansion after the sunlight hit it after the first day it was clear that I did not leave enough room.

I am closely watching to see if (and how much) the floor slides under normal driving conditions. I would not say the floor under is extremely smooth but it was an epoxy coat and so I may need to call racedeck for solutions to this as they claim they have one but no one seems to post what it is

Hi Dan -

If you give us a call on Monday we can give you some easy options that we have used floors that have been polished and very smooth. If you sub floor has any texture at all, you should not have an issue.

that's awesome! I know the feeling about wanting to keep things clean when you first get them.... some times it turns into a lifelong habit! but that's not a bad thing.. it just means you've acquired a new appreciation for something you might have taken for granted in the past.

BTW, I know racedeck website has a layout design tool, but i have a oddly shaped garage that isn't rectangular, there's one wall that is diagonal. i want to plan out my layout before ordering. do you guys have any suggestions for design tools?

Call us on Monday and we can work a design with you.. In the meantime, you can just make the graph ( floor size) bigger on the layout and only fill the sqft you want in any linear shape

This is what I was going to suggest, but make a large area on the racedeck design site that is bigger than you need, and only fill in the tiles that fit your garage. Once done, you can take a screen shot and paste it to the windows paint program to cut off the odd shapped areas. That is what I did with the design at the beginning of this thred, copied from Racedeck website to windows paint program, then made the cut out along the left side and added in the drain cover in the center of the design.
