Ordering a new Snap On box....

I've got someone at work that is going to buy my Matco MB7525 roll cab and I am going to order a new KRL 1022 from our Snap On Industrial Rep.

He keeps trying to get me to upgrade to their heavy duty lock. Is there really anything different about it that makes it worth the purchase? I think it was $70 or so.

Also need advice on what color to get. Cranberry, Silver, Black or yellow(the matco box is yellow). Also getting a stainless top.

i don't know what differences there are in the locks. color is a very personal choice, get what you like and congrats!

I didn't even know they had an upgraded lock now.

Have you checked out the candle apple?

Color selection is an important choice as with the cost of the box, you'll live with your decision for quite awhile. The yellow and other light colored boxes show every greasy fingerprint and can look a little dingey if not maintained. Enjoy your purchase.

If you stick to the standard red, it is often easier to find used side boxes or top chests years down the road... That said, if it was me, I'd get the black because it looks cool and doesn't show dirt nor does any spots where you might use a little touch up paint.

I have a black box now, and it is so hard to keep clean, and shows every little nick and scratch. But yes it dose look sweet when its clean. My latest boxes are yellow, Hard to keep clean but doesn't show scratches.

Black also shows dust really bad. I do woodworking in my garage and sawdust clings to my tool boxes. I prefer black though, I think it looks really sleek. The cranberry is really cool color also!

The standard red will hold the boxes value better in case you might sell it some day. Also, if you leave the side handle off the box and never bolt it on, that increases a used box's value exponentially.

A used SO box will be the best box for the money and hold its value best as well. It won't drop too much after you buy it assuming you take care of it.

Thanks for the opinions guys. I think I'm going to pass on the 'upgraded' lock. I think he's just trying to add a few more dollars to his sale.

I'm almost sold on the cranberry color. It's down to that or silver but definitely leaning towards cranberry. I have a yellow box now, and it looks all worn out when it's not perfectly clean, lol. Everyone at work has bright red and black so I want to be different. I'll have to put the handle on it because I have to push my box around 4 different hangers. As for the deal, it's $5k even for the KRL 1022, a stainless steel top, tax and freight. He gives us the industrial discount. I'm getting $1500 for my Matco which is almost 5 years old and is what I paid for it to start with. I bought it used (my Matco) and wish I'd bought new the first time.

I'll have to put the handle on it because I have to push my box around 4 different hangers.

Run the screws in by themselves first with some air tool oil on them, back them out and then mount your handle on. This procedure clears the powder coating out of the thread inserts so that you can get a nicer torque feel when you go to mount the handle on; otherwise, they're very hard to screw in dry. All you need is a 3/16" hex socket, an extension, and a 1/4" drive ratchet.
