Organization ideas?

Looking for some ideas for getting things organized in our shop. I need to get a bigger toolbox soon, but would also like to store wrenches and hammers on the wall close to the box. If I were to track down one of the older display boards from one of the tool companies what would be a good way to mount it with this style of wall?

Assuming the dimension between those horizontal girts is less than 48", I'd screw some prefinished 3/4" plywood across that span from the first to second girt and go to town hanging basically whatever you want.

If that doesn't work...add blocking(2x4's etc) as required onto those girts so you can attach some 3/4" plywood...then proceed from there.

OSB will work as well, but look worse and screws won't hold as much as the plywood.

Yes you will loose the shelf that the girt is providing you right now....just make a new one with some shelf brackets or create actual homes for the things being stored on that girt right now with tool holders on the new plywood

Nice tractor collection. You could do some sort of slatewall setup, you can hang anything from hammers to bins/shelves/cabinets on that and move stuff around easier than permanent mounts on plywood. Those old tool displays are cool but generally geared towards only one type of tool or fastener.

I bet you could come up with a way to mount something such as plywood between the two horizontal girts at the back, so you wouldn't loose your ready made shelves

First order of business is to get some insulation on those walls and roof.

I'm in the same boat as you with organizing.
I have no clue where I want to place things.
And I know I'll have to but hate not being able to utilize the built in shelves.

I know approximately where different tasks will take place but kind of stuck there.
I just hope it doesn't end up looking like my garage at home does right now.
It's scattered, its here and there but, I do know where most things are at.
Now if someone was over and I asked them to hang me so and so tool, I'd get the deer in headlights look.

I prefer wheeled toolboxes, shelves and cabinets. This permits flexibility of placing them where you initially want to lay out the spaces, as well as relocating as needed for a project, plus reconfiguring the space as your needs change. Also, lots of power outlets, including drops.

It’ll likely never get insulated. It doesn’t get much condensation inside and other than it being hot in the summer the cost isn’t worth it at the moment. Maybe when it’s actually mine it’ll get done, but for now there’s bigger stuff in line around the place to get done first.

If the place is not yours, consider wheeled toolboxes as suggested above and something easily attached (the boards, etc.).

When/if it becomes yours, do electric work (1 and 3-phase), compressed air, AC and plumbing if needed, then insulate and proceed with tool organizing. By that time you'll know better what you need and where you need it and won't have to disassemble much.

First thing I do, is to get anything I can off the floor,
and up high in the unused air space.
Racks hanging from all thread and or strut... lots of up high shelving, with no legs going to the floor.
