Hi folks,

Can anyone please offer suggestions and/or examples of how you store your ******* and mill files in order to minimize wear and prevent damage to the files from banging against each other, etc.

I had my files (10 approximately, varied sizes) laid out in a 2 inch toolbox drawer, but I'd like a storage solution which takes up less space, perhaps a tool/wrench roll, etc. I've also seen files stored in plastic sleeves or original packaging, but I don't have any of those, and I haven't been able to track any down.

Any suggestions or photos of how you store your files would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I use Manila folders. Cut them out and fold to form a sheath around the file. Then tape the seams. This is inexpensive and easy to do.

Here's how I hang my most used ones on the end of my welding/worktable. It is a piece of aluminum bent into a 90, with slots for the files. A small upturn on the outer edge keeps the files in place.

That's a good idea, thanks. I imagine plastic card might work well too.

That's funny, I have those file handles, but they're branded by Pferd. I like the tray option, but I'd prefer my files to take up less space in my box, since I use them infrequently.

Nonetheless, thanks for the reply.

Look at the small "horse" logo at the file itself :) Pferd too :)

I use the aluminum angle method for my really big files as was shown before (pic below; Mine uses a piece alum of step edge molding and it was curved already as part of the extrusion) and the 2" drawer method for the smaller files. In the drawer I alternate the blades and handles to minimize banding them around, However I like the manila folder sheath idea also!

I welded this up last week from some scrap 20ga steel. I didn't want to spend too much time on it so it's only spray painted.

Here is how they were before, just rubbing all over each other.

I don't use mine that often either unless drilling, welding or trimming hoofs. I like the manila envelope idea too. I figure mine into a wrench roll so that they all can be seen when needed the rolled up, tied then put away in a different drawer giving me more space.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I might try to track down a larger wrench roll for my files. That custom file tray is pretty neat, but for my purposes, I think I'll shoot for something I can roll up and bury at the back of the tool box.

Can anyone recommend an inexpensive tool/wrench roll? (I have a range of files from 6" to 12")

It actually doesn't even have to be a manila folder...brown paper bag will work too. I have sheaths for my chef's knives, which have lasted for 10 years, made out of brown wrapping paper/brown paper bag material. Cut it the length of your file and roll it around the file about 7 times. Then put a piece of tape around it and you are good to go. They will last a lot longer than you might think.
