Organizing of electrical drawers?

Getting a new tool cart soon and trying to see how others are keeping there electrical drawers as lately I have been doing more with diagnostic and a test light and dmm and scanner are being used more

So getting ideas do you keep leads together with dmm as searching for leads or piercings leads can be annoying while looking to back probe just ideas from others here

My electrical drawer is a continuous work in progress it seems, though some things are fairly organized (provided I put stuff back the way I got it out).

I have Bosch tool bags for the multi meters and the Power probe 3. They came with a couple 10.8v tools a while back and can be had on ebay as well. Meter accessories, probes and other smaller items for testing go in Plano boxes. Leads and other corded items I usually use a velcro cable wrap on if they dont get used too often, ones I use a lot are just coiled up for now until I find a better method. Gearties may be just the thing to use thinking about it.

Having your collection of test leads, jumpers, etc. hanging vertically is fastest and easiest, but obviously isn't very portable and looks messy.

I have quite a few hanging from the handle on one end, but obviously that isn't ideal if you need to use the handle.

Velcro cable wraps are probably the best way to keep things reasonably organized and un-tangled in a drawer. If you have a lot, you can store the seldom-used ones coiled in zippered bags to keep them out of the way and protected, but accessible.

I use binder clips to keep coiled test leads neat. Fishing tackle cases for electrical terminals and connectors.

I’ve been in the 12vdc industry since 92’ and I find that my setup is always a bit different from the next chap. Since then, it has evolved. My go-to multimeter always has the original leads wrapped onto itself and I store extra leads & attachments in a zippered pouches that’s labeled with a Sharpie. I find that these pouches are much more suitable than hard cases & boxes as I can grab what I need, pull out what I need quickly and stuff it all back in without afterthought.

Fluke and others have roll up pouches with different pockets for lead sets

I need to reorganize my setup I think I’m going to get a large Plano tackle box with divider boxes for my stuff.

One of the trends now, if one does a lot of diag work and has the space for it, is to dedicate a rollcart to it. This is something I will definitely be doing in the future if I don’t move into a field service truck.

I prefer the velcro strip cables. That and kitchen organizer plastic trays for more specialty leads I may not use as frequently.

That thread has some older pics of my diag setup. Lots has changed since then, but the organization concepts are similar.

A small drawer organizer/tray would be ideal for backprobes, wire piercing probes, etc. to keep them laid out where you can quickly see and grab what you need. The rest of the stuff, you'll have to get creative and likely keep re-working things multiple times before you find something that works well for you.

In my home tool box the only electrical tools are what's redundant or automotive specific only. Electrical tape, fuses and pullers, 88V, test light, misc doubles of other tools, scan tool (mine is just a BT dongle to use with tablet). My timing light lives in mine also just because it's not enough to fill a drawer. Pliers-shaped-items like strippers i keep in the pliers drawer. I use QDs and other electrical stuff more outside my garage so those live in a portable box but having a good way to organize connections, shrink wrap, portasol if you use it, etc would be ideal.

This is in my main home box and i don't do much electrical so it may be useless for you in your cart in a pro setting.

If I had a hutch on my box i would definitely do this. clip them to something not too thick and grab what you need. I have done a few clipped to the lip of my cart's lid when I'm in the middle of working with them but it's not a good home for them permanently.
