Seeing your power connection, I was wondering if structures like that have to have the power hooked up under code requirements?

Almost all garages consist in cooperative societies, mine neighbor - the senior in our cooperative society, he has a general counter, everybody pay him for electricity, security, some years taxes.

Is that cellar just a deep dug-out, or is it shelved?
What was the building used for originally? I assume (for no other reason than appearance) it dates back to the Soviet era, and I am given to understand private vehicle ownership was rather rare for the average citizen then. Off-site storage for apartment dwellers?

In cellar there is a room, 2,5 x 3 meters, and 1,7 m high. It is for keeping vegetables from summer residence, in Russia its called DACHA.

My father built this garage in 1994. He had a car, peugeot 305. But then I broke it (

I live in a flat, and the road to garage takes me around 10 minutes. If you are interesting I will try to make somekind presentation what do I see by going to garage.

Let me pop in here, without stealing the thread I hope, Sanko. Private veicle ownership was rather rare in the Soviet time, but there was still a portion who hade their own cars. Maybe some 10-20% in the 1980s, very roughly. Permits to buy a car was given either by waiting for years in the official queue, by contacts in the administration. Last opportunity, second hand market with very high prices. I do not know exactly how permits for starting a garage cooperative was given and to get a garage, but a garage was quite usefull even without a car. To keep going in the soviet system you had to be rather self relying. Lots of stuff were difficult to find. You needed a snow shovel in december, but they were all sold already in november, then you made one yourself in that garage of yours and so on, and the more entrepreneurial guy even started to make them for friends and neighbours if he had supply of material. I have not lived that life myself, but in one way I'd really liked it, on the other hand it must have been a quite tedious life, queing for the most basic essentials and involwing half of the family for supplies, sending granny to stand in a queue for milk and washing powder etc.

Can I get some more pictures and info on your car?! I'm a honda freak, but we don't have that model, or atleast not that I know of.

Not about garages but I wonder if you know about the 1945 meeting of American and Russian Army in Germany in April 1945 known here as "East Meets West" ?
My father was in the 69th Infantry Division, the one that met the Russian 58th Guards.

Here is a you tube video about the event:

The photo below was taken in a hospital in England, he looks a bit rough because this was after he was wounded by a land mine in Germany. You see his left eye and left side were badly injured. You can see the "69th" insignia on his left sleeve. You see the "69th" insignia on the sign in the video about half way through.

Russian tools can be first class.

I am the happy ownerof two excellent pieces of russian made tools. They were sold by two russian guys at an old car meeting here in Vasteras Sweden some years ago. Very reasonable prizes.
One is a drill chuck, MK3 with a range of 5-20 mm. Runs absolutely true, beautiful finish and not marked in any way except 5-20 mm. Came in a paper box with lots of antirust compound.
The other is a set of inside micrometers from 5 to 60 mm. Came in a similar paper packing, no brand name. Calibration rings included!
Both boxes had printing in Russian. A friend who comes from the Ukraine translated for me, and said it was marked property of the CCCP army, and manufactured at a tool factory in then Leningrad. Date manufactured were 1982.

Russian machinist tools are well made, we can still have get them here in Estonia in a few places at very decent prices. Ordinary hand tools that I have seen isn't that good, but there must be exceptions I guess, you cant wrench on a Sputnik with bad tools.

I have also once got a russian paint scraper that was absolutely the best I've ever tried, and I have tried quite a lot of them. I've used it for five years and it's still sharp. There was an importer for it but he's disappeared. I will cry when mine is gone, perhaps I'd post a pic of it here soon and ask if one of our russian friends can find more of them.

Thank-you Sanko and Magnus. I travel some, and read lots, and it's nice to know how correct things are.

Sanko, I am interested in anything you care to post, stills or videos, of your garage or not. I'd love to see more of where you live.

Great work, and thanks for posting. It's fantastic to hear from people all around the world, the differences, and unique challenges.

Where to you purchase your garage supplies and tools, do you have to go to a state run store, or are thereother outlets?

Wow, looks a lot like the garages in Vilnius, Lithuania. Reminds me of when my grandpa would take me out there to show me his car, Volga GAZ-24. It's amazing how those old garages are still standing the same way they were built.
I remember the cellar too... I was so afraid of it when I was little :D

Thanks for the tour Sanko :)
I've noticed that regular people in the ex-soviet countries seem to be very good at making do with what they have or can scrounge, it's something the rest of us can learn from...
I certainly respect the amount of backbreaking work it took to get that floor looking so good:thumbup:

Can't help it...with every one of your posts, I read them in my mind with a Russian accent:lol_hitti

The Russians did make many fine tools... one of them was called the M91/30:D

Привет из штатов! In the 90's I had an office in Moscow, and a Chaika (assigned) to hoot around in. Became good friends with the driver, went parts-hunting in junkyards in Podmoskov'e with him, almost got involved in the developing auto market there. The first time I visited бывшая совдепия was in 69. The only cars on the road in town barreled down the center lane with lights flashing, on the way to the Kremlin. Some times! Now you have F1 car exhibitions and traffic jams. And to magnusk750, they did indeed make some very good machine tools. Actually, Soviet Russia was responsible for developing a lot of the technology for machining titanium. If you make your subs out of it, you have to... And a 305! Actually a pretty nice little car, drove one around France for a couple of months, This is a great thread, keep us up to date with your adventures!

I dont like video much. photo takes a moment, thats more interesting. I have my Nikon D40x, I dont have videocamera and spare cash on purchase. mobilevideo --- somekind of a badword
but I still looking how to put in GJ photos with a good quality

I live in a small town Vorotynsk, and big city Kaluga is about 25 km. There are many shops, and prices are so different. People are trying to make money like this "To buy more cheaply and to sell more expensively". As you can see I haven't bought good hand tools yet. I would order something from abroad.

now I`m going to put some photos

my place. My parents live in the house opposite mine. somephotos made my father from his windows and some I from mine.

this small town was built by germans for russian families of military men. my father is the military pensioner, he was an engineer and knows everything about helicopter Mi8. One year ago a military part has been disbanded. And there is no more helicopters in the sky.

mi24 at night, exposure

This field will be soon built up

Sometimes I need to go further from the city...to countryside. you can meet a cow on the road and that bald man almost everywhere.

don`t worry honey, we are not gonna hurt you.

Maladiets!

I lived in Kazakhstan for a while, my Russian is still terrible. But I saw lots of garages. Have a bunch of repair posters for Lada's from an old technical school.

Good pictures, Sanko! GJ allows one to get a taste of everyday life in other countries. I value GJ for that. This is a especially interesting thread for me.

Murmansk's gorgeous garages

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/spl/hi/pop_ups/06/business_murmansk0s_gorgeous_garages/html/1.stm

This was in a thread a couple of years ago, before that, I posted it a couple of times, I first saw it on this board probably 5 years or more ago. Similar kind of garages.

Sanko has done an excellent job of cleaning, organizing and repairing. You have to start somewhere.

Charles

Nice link. Thanks. Seems to fit a lot of areas of the "old" Russia.
