I really want to find an original Snap On tool set. With the 10 sockets, speed handles, and T-Handles, and case to keep them in. Anyone know where I might find a set? I want to have the sockets polished and the box refinished, pretty much restore it. Any ideas? SOmething like the one in the pic

Your pic isn't showing, at least not for me.

If you want info or leads to vintage SO, get in touch with snapmom from on here, or chad s; they are the big-league collectors, as far as I can tell.

Snap on has the only known set.

Wow, that's amazing. You know, there are quite a few of us on here who each have a piece or two of that early stuff. I wonder if we could find very specific descriptions of all the known pieces, and perhaps we could get together somehow and put a set together?

I have a few pieces myself, but I must admit that I don't know if we're talking 1/2" drive, 3/8 drive, 9/32 drive, 5/8 drive, etc. Don't know if there were sets in 6 point, 12 point, 8 point, or whatever.

Snapmom, can you give us more insight as to which "set" we're talking about?

This could be interesting, and a great group project for Garage Journal members. :rocker:

I would like to find a complete set if possible, and restore it. Polish the sockets and wrenches, refinish the case etc.

You misspelled "destroy". By the way. If thru some miracle you came across a complete 1920-1923 starter set and proceeded to strip, polish and refinish the case you obliterate the value.

Havent you seen Antiques Roadshow? "this chippendale desk should bring $400,000 at auction but since you refinished it, all you get is a punch in the nuts"

Absolute best laugh out loud thing I've heard all day (but it's only 0715), "all you get is a punch in the nuts" hilarious. My wife will wonder what the hell I'm laughing at next time we're watching Roadshow.
I have always thought you could make every episode of Roadshow hilarious by dubbing in the things I'm thinking as I watch, but I never thought of that one. Thanks!

The 75th Anniversary reproduction sets show up sometimes. Not what you're after, I know, but may be the closest you can get.

I've done a few extreme restorations of the lessor pieces that a collector would never consider buying. Not SO stuff but other brands from to teens to the 30's.

If an item such as a tin is rusted and bashed, but still identified as as being an original item there should be no shame in squareing it back up and repainting back to decent condition.
Taking a near perfect specimen and stripping and repainting would definately hurt collector value. A scrap value specimen, not as much change in the value to a fussy collector. And I'll bet there are a few hundred battered ones to every super nice one out there in the wild.

VERY cool, Snapmom. What drive-size is that set? And, which specific pieces do you need to finish it? I have a couple dozen really old Snap On tools. I wonder if I can fill in any of your missing units?

Merry Christmas to all!

I'm not wanting to do this to sell it for profit, I want to do it for a personal collection. I want to start collecting old tools. So I will most definately refinish the case. I don't care if it brings the value down or not, it'll make it priceless to me.

I have a set I'm selling for my Snap-On tool dealer who retired and is taking care of cleaning out his promotional inventory. He won a prize from snapon in the early 1970s for having sold the most tools. Its called "the original set" . Im trying to help him value / sale this. Cant find anything on it. Any info ?

I'd start a thread with detailed pics. Do you want to sell it here or do you want a valuation so you can sell it on another platform. At the end of the day an oddball rare item like that is worth what someone's willing to pay for it but I bet it would attract interest. Putting up some pics would at least allow members with extensive knowledge tell you exactly what you have i.e whether its really an 'original set' or a factory produced commemoration replica of the original set. Sounds like a cool piece!

From a post earlier in this thread, that looks like a reproduction set that was produced for their 75th anniversary. Still pretty cool, though.
