I want to wall up and celling my shop with something. I kinder like OSB board. I would like to paint it white. I have know idea how much paint I would need to paint the inside of a shop the size of 30 x 60 x 12' !! Or I can use white paneling from lowes for around $7.95 per sheet and not paint at all. I know this is my shop what would you guys do. Leave the osb like it is or paint the osb or panel up the walls.

Everybody has a oponion tell me what yours is and maybe a picture.

Thanks

Just finished painting the osb walls in my garage this weekend. Originally didn't think I wanted too, but adding some color to the room made it feel more finished. Used a flat primer first then 1 or some places 2 coats of color. Used caulk to fill some of the larger gaps between the osb. Garage is 28x40, finished area is about 28x26

I did my walls in OSB. Then I painted it white. First coat was oil base sealer. Second coat was cheap white water based latex gloss. It turned out as white as a sheet of paper. If you get the OSB sealed with the first coat, the second one will do a great job of covering.

I believe using OSB inside the garage is a good choice as it is usually cheaper than paneling and it adds a lot more strength to the walls. Be sure to run your OSB panels lengthwise with your trusses when putting up the ceiling. My experience with that is there seems to be less noticable gaps and warping at the joints. I also recommend painting the OSB because it makes a huge difference in the lighting. I went through about 5 gallons of cheap white primer inside a 22' x 24' x 8' garage with OSB walls and ceiling. I felt the white primer alone was satisfactory for color however I would use Kilz primer if doing it over.

The house I bought in Texas had the shop in unpainted OSB. The cheap, white $10 gallon wally world paint soaked right in, however, the top of the line bright white paint and primer from our neighborhood Ace store did a fantastic job.

I am planning on doing the interior of my new pole barn with OSB,and I expect to go through a goodly amount of paint. It pays off in the long run for not only lighting, but the abilty to keep the building clean.

OSB usually has a smooth side and a rough side, be sure to put the smooth side out and you'll be able to paint it. I think you'll find the paneling to be much more fragile than the OSB.

I'm using Valspar Exterior paint (Duramax I believe) to paint the interior of my shop (see photos here http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=10218 , photos on next to last page I think). Two coats were used, the second is applied immediately after the first (no dry time) and it's covered.
Remember Lowes will usually discount if you ask. I bought eight gallons and asked for a discount, normal price was $36 a gallon, he sold it to me for $31.

I had pretty good success painting the OSB in my shop as well. I did as others have suggested and primed with a decent primer and top coated with some latex I found on clearance at lowes. I actually get compliments on the way it turned out.

Edit....BTW, I used Valspar primer and paint

I used a cheap latex primer that I found for under $5.00 per gallon (no need for KILZ since you're not trying to cover up any stains, mold, etc).

I did use a good industrial equipment gloss enamel for the finish coat... I did my 30X50 with about 4 gallons @ $12.00 per gallon.

OSB has been debated here for ages.... some guys a skeeered their gargae will start on fire if so much as one spark hits it. Not so... and it works great.

OSB is alot more resilient than most people give it credit. And it does have a smooth side and a rough side. If its a high quality OSB like Georgia Pacific, that smooth side is ultra smooth!

At my local Lowe's, 7/16" OSB is $5.43, cheaper than 1/4" by about $1. I believe the white paneling you are talking about is the white coated masonite. It is junk in my opinion, especially for a garage. Scratches easily, if it gets wet it's ruined, offers no protection, no strength, warps easily.

If your local Lowe's has the 7/16" cheaper than the 1/4" like it is here, I would get it over the 1/4". Sure its heavier to deal with but it will be worth it in the long run.

As far as paint, I would use a good quality primer first to seal the OSB then paint it. If you want to fill screw holes easily, I take the dust from cutting the OSB and mix it with Elmer's wood glue. Make your own wood filler from the exact material it came from.

I Just finished painting my 24x24 OSB walled and ceiling shop. I used about 12-13 gallons (2 coats with a 3/4 knapp roller) of Zinser 1-2-3. I then used about 4 gallons (another 2 coats) of exterior semi gloss white paint. The extra work of applying all the primer is the key to making it look nice. I am very happy with the way it came out. I think the advantage of OSB is it is very strong- I am not going to pop a hole in it as easy as drywall. It is very easy to touch up if something does happen.

Hey! Jason has a good point I think. Semi Gloss! I bet that would look sharp with good light reflectivity.

I will try that out I think.

Can skim coat with drywall mud to make it smooth. My Dad did that in his shop.
He uses OSB on everything, cost he gets it for around $3 a sheet in 1/2" (been working at an OSB mill for 26 years)

One more questions guys. Would you paint the OSB before I nail it up or after I nail it to the wall?

bullet280, I love the way you did your OSB. Very nice and easy. Now I want to see a picture of the RED cooker and more than one also Please.

Thanks
