osb for ceiling

I just built a garage, it is fully insulated and I am ready to hang either drywall or osb for walls and ceiling. I want to use the osb, but friends say it will sag if used on the ceiling, any suggestions?

If you use the 7/16 stuff and the framing is on 24" centers, it will sag unless you use the little clips.

OSB does not offer any fire protection at all compared to drywall.

1/2 osb is rated for 24" centers, it doesn't sag on the roof with a layer of shingles on it. 7/16" probably can't sag more than 1/4", barly noticable, with no load on it (you say the garage is already insulated). But I'd still recomend drywall, a dark ceiling makes a space feel small.

24" centers should use 5/8 sheetrock , i would never use osb. too much fire hazard, cant believe inspector would allow it, or even if insurance agent checked over your garage.

OSB is a common interior wall finish here in the midwest. I know of many shops, home and commercial, that use OSB for interior walls.

Here's some info from an OSB trade association that verifies that it meets fire rating standards.

OSB does sag. Look at the roof of any cheap or expensive tract or semi custom home that uses 24" O.C. trusses and OSB for the roof. You can see every single seam and truss telegraph through the roof material when the sun is at the right angle. Some are so bad that you don't need lighting help. That is the reason behind the popularity of "architectural shingles" in tract homes- they charge you more to use cheaper materials.

You may not see the sag on your ceiling, and you will probably do a better job installing it than those cheap *** builders pushing their crews for maximum profit instead of quality.

Definately a NO-NO in Md.

I also would recommend sheetrock, harder to put up for sure , just make a T-post from a couple 2x's and they will take the weight while you screw gun it to the trusses.

I rented one of those drywall lifts, I think it was $40 for the day, well worth it, especially with the 5/8"
