OSB for walls and ceiling - What thickness?

Hey guys,

looking to start insulating the walls and ceiling of my 28x36x12 garage and then covering the with OSB. I just can't decide what thickness i should use on the walls or ceiling.
Any recommendations? Any reason i should use more then 7/16th?

by the way, I'm only looking for a functional workspace with my garage, it will never be a pretty shop.

Used 7/16th on walls and ceiling of mine and it looks good.

+1, use 7/16. Thinner stuff too wavy, thicker stuff is too heavy to work with.

If you do any welding you might want to consider that OSB is very easily ignited from sparks. Most codes require drywall on ceiling instead of OSB for that reason. On walls I have seen some of the members cover OSb with metal because of that. Check some other posts and you will see this.

I used 7/16" on my roof and outer walls. Later when I finished the inside, 1/2" was on sale cheaper than the thinner 7/16", so I ended up with the 1/2" on the inside.

I second drywall. Or get a really good insurance policy.

I used 7/16 for walls and ceiling, as I got it all free. Mine, too, is a shop, not a man-cave. It can be a pain to paint, though.

if you plan on doing a lot of welding / grinding - or - you're not a fan of painting or working with heavy sheets - look into corrugated white steel panels - seconds and over runs can be had from wholesalers at prices that make you think twice about all the extra work of drywall or painted osb.

If you go with osb - buy enough corrugated to do your metal working corner for safety's sake.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll go with 7/16". was going to pre-paint with Kilz primer before hanging just to lighten up the space

I won't be doing a lot of welding or grinding so I'm not too worried about fire, but will obviously take precautions when I am. I think there is some large sheets of corrugated steel left over from my poll barn that i can set up when needed.

Thought about the metal for the walls but discarded the idea as i will have a 4ft deep shelf running around half of my garage at about 8ft up. (similar to the one that exists now if you take a look at the thread in my signature) and i think putting that back up with steel on the walls would be a major pain.

I too did 7/16 on walls. Getting ready for ceiling today. Was thinking 1/2. I have heard don't want to 3/8 to wavy. Curious about 71/6 if its cheaper.

I used 1/2" on mine. Within a few cents of 7/16" at the time.

Painted it with KILZ & Sherwin Williams ProMar 200. Sprayed on with an airless sprayer, and back-rolled for consistency.

I do cut, grind. and weld, and haven't burned it down yet.

Do any of the walls share a wall with the house? If so, it has to be drywall.

It is supposed to be code. Not a bad code. Not sure if I am going to worry about it or no. Though if the rest of the garage is roaring its going to jump into the attic pretty quick. Its probably the ceiling you need to worry about.

I just picked up 13 sheets of 1/2 plywood today. Going to put a light stain on it and poly.

I have 7/16" on my walls and ceiling too. I'd wait to put it up to paint it. You wont have a buch of "wet" sheets laying around. You can chaulk the seams (if you have any gaps) and paint over them.
