OSB price goes up and down depending on supply and demand. Your post states that it was $7 a year ago and $12 now. You just confirmed that it does go up and down.
Yes, it will go up and it will go down. I can't tell you when and how much. My crystal ball is broken.

In my area it was just over $10 before Hurricane Sandy. The day after it hit the east coast I ran down to Lowe's and bought 30 sheets for pick up later. the following weeks it went up to $13 and is still rising.

Word around here was that osb was going to take another big jump. It was at $17.00 per sheet. Just when I was ready to get going on my shop it seemed like a good time to buy a lift.
Just my luck, two weeks after buying a lift it dropped to $13.00. I could have saved about $200. had I waited. Pay your money and take your chances I guess.

I bought some this time last year for $9.00/sheet. Now it's $20.00.

When it hits the same price as standard plywood sheeting, everyone stops buying it and then the price comes crashing down. It takes about two years to go full cycle. It's so stupid.

I need about 20 sheets also, but no way am I going to pay what it costs right now, the best way to fight the high price is not to buy it, let it gather dust on the rack. As the price approaches plywood, maybe that is what I'll use..

I'm just thankful that I'm about done with the framing on my 2-story addition.....I will need at most maybe one more sheet....

Last summer I was paying $10 for 4x10 sheets....now it's over $18.....I could pretty much buy struct 1 plywood for the same price now.

Ive been watching 7/16's OSB for 3 months now. It fluctuates between 10.97 a sheet to $14.97 a sheet, always between those numbers. Right now its $11.77.

I watch HD, Lowes, Menards and smaller local lumber yards daily, literally daily. I need 30 sheets minimum, so im watching like a hawk.

I am in the lumber business and AMCguy is right. It's pretty much a two year cycle. The mills have been shut down since the first week of November and this creates a temporary short supply situation. When the price approaches that of plywood they will start up again.
It might be March or April before the prices start to come off though.

watch craigslist as well as at times there is OSB listed at very low prices. my last purchase was 4ft x 10 ft sheets of OSB for 10 dollars each. person had 80 sheets but left them out in the rain , fortunately 40 of them was still very nice condition.

Glad I bought mine in November for the roof of my shed. It was $10 then. Just today I saw it at $14.95 in HD. With 120 sheets that really adds up.

Most mills were closed down for maintenance over the holiday. Right now its up 20/thousand. It's going to go even higher as soon distributors buy and receive new stock. Most companies (retailers) have already made their "market" adjustments in retail pricing.

Haha - yep, should have stocked up when it was $7.95 here in May 2012, I saw $13.95 at HD this evening. It outperformed the stock market by a wide margin. Oh, and I saw it around $15 just a couple of months ago.

9.80 at HD here in Winnipeg Canada. Or at least that's the price listed online.
Never noticed the fluctuation. But now that I know I'll keep it in mind.
Good topic. Thanks for starting the thread.
