OSB Wall/Ceiling Queations

For those of you who have installed OSB walls/ ceiling, I have a few questions. I'm working on finishing my 40'X30" detached garage. I just had insulation installed so the next step is is installing the walls and ceiling and I plan to use OSB for both.

I have been pricing 7/16 OSB and from what I have found so far, Home Depot/Lowes are significantly cheaper than the lumber yards.

The 7/16 OSB at both places is about 1/16 to 1/8 short of being a true 4X8 sheet. I'm guessing this is to leave room for the clips when being used for roof sheeting? Did anybody run into issues with OSB edges not lining up on the studs/trusses over a longer run if the sheets are butted up together? My walls are 16" OC and the ceiling trusses are 24" OC.

I found 1/2" OSB at Lowes that measures true 4X8. The description on their website says the true size is smaller just like the 7/16 and I'm not sure if I have a large bulk order, if it would be the same as what's on the shelf.

Also, what type and length of screws would be good to use?

Thanks for any help or advice.

You think your studs are 16 OC within 1/16?

LoL

Overthinking this. If somehow you end up off a stud halfway across, cut 15" or so off to the center of the last stud and start a fresh sheet.

If framing/trusses are just a little off/not 90deg/plumb etc I would make effort that the ends land between studs and use a scrap piece as backing as long as the osb is not structural.

That way you also only see factory edges in the field.

Not that I have ever done that with osb but doing that with drywall was one of those things I wish I done decades ago.

Good luck with your project.

+1 to both...

Depending on the situation, I used of these solutions when sheeting my garage with 7/16" OSB from Home Depot.

The size discrepancy is to allow for expansion of the sheet goods. When installing OSB you should tack a nail between the panels and not **** them tightly because OSB will expand and contract depending on humidity levels, causing buckling of the sheet. I've seen it many times.

So I used 7/16" OSB on my 16" oc walls. Never really had an issue with the slightly shorter length.

All I did was make sure I had a spacer I made up at 1/16" to make sure I had that little bit of expansion.

Been over 10 years now and zero issues. I did prime and paint it so it looks pretty good.
