Just a quick question.Am working on garage and wondering how long i can leave osb for outside wall uncovered in the weather before having to get roof on?I know as soon as possible but working on spare time and spare money.Not going fast.Thanks

Guess i could cover it somehow.The person at lowes suggested to paint it.Said his small building been in weather for 4 years and no problem.Have seen pictures here that had snow covered roofs and walls.Just wondering if a problem.

When I built my garage, I put up my OSB around the first of Sept and had my final building inspection at that time. The inspector recommended that I get the siding on it in less than a year because water will weaken it if left a year or more. I put the siding on in less than 2 weeks after the inspection so it wasn't a problem for me. I didn't want my wall structure to be compromised and find it out a few years later in a big windstorm.

Get roofing paper on it as soon as possible. OSB is a great product ,but will swell very quickly if not covered. Once the roofing paper is on you are protected from the elements. If it gets holes in it or blows off repair it right away until you get your shingles on..If the OSB swells,you will always see the seams and buckles. I build houses for a living and we use OSB on all our houses. Good Luck.

can he use it on an outside wall?

He either needs tar paper or a house wrap product like Tyvex over the OSB under whatever he is using for siding, he can put it on now but like has been stated, repair any holes in the paper as soon as you see them.

I can use Tyvex on outside but what about inside until I get roof on?

I would try to make sure that the top plate and the top of the OSB were covered with something, some visqueen, 4 mil would do, just staple it so it's over the tyvek on the outside and then run it over the top and down the inside, a little water on the osb won't hurt, but if the top edge gets water between the plate and OSB it will take a long time to dry out and the OSB could swell.

if you use osb for a roof you should put tar paper on it right after. if you use osb for an exterior wall use tyvec to cover it
