You can easily prevent this from happening in the future by just giving up some of your privacy and getting emailed receipts for everything.
This is true.
I am a member of the HD email club, or whatever you call it, and every time I buy something there, first they ask for my phone number, which is attached to my account, which then shows my email address.
Before I even leave the store, my phone gives me a buzz that shows the receipt has been sent to my email.
Once you start getting the email receipts sent to your email address you don't need to have your actual receipt to return an item. They just look you up on their computer and see it. It does not matter what form of payment you used to buy the items (cash, credit, debit, gift card) they should refund you back in either the same form of payment you used, or offer you store credit for the returned items.
Lowes does something similar to this with their "My Lowes" account. They give you some stickers that has a bar code on it that they scan before you pay for your stuff, and it keeps track of all your purchases. You don't ever need a receipt for a return, as they have all the info on their computers.
I find it quite convenient to make purchases this way, because my wife can return things for me, and she does not have to have my credit card on her or even my ID to make a return. All she has to do it give them our phone number, which will then bring up my account info, and as long as the item she is returning is on one of the electronic receipts, she gets my money back.
It works very well.
