I have normal deep(250ft) well set up with a diaphram pressure tank with a manifold attached to the one in/out fitting on the tank. After the manifold and several feet of pipe is the Honeywell screen type flushable strainer filter. On the input to the manifold is a check valve. I was getting water hammer ONLY when the pump shut off and after reading it could be the check valve, I replaced it and the water hammer stopped for a few days. When it resumed, I took a closer look at the old valve and it was full of sand. After cleaning, it was working again. My filter is after the manifold and does not keep sand out of the tank or away from the check valve. Is it normal not to have a filter before the check valve? I was good without one for a lot of years. I guess a 25 yr old well is bringing up more sand or the screen down there is shot. What I want to know is what is the best type of upstream filter to use. I saw one that creates a centrifuge to spin out the sand , with no filter element so as not to reduce pressure. I don't even know how much of an issue that is. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks.
