OTC 6618 Inner Race Puller

I'm looking for this tool set, and it appears to be discontinued. I like the puller for inner-race use, and the chain doodad for MB CV axles and other similar uses. Is there a good alternative to this kit?

I don't 100% understand how it works...in my mind if I was going to pull on the inner race of a ball bearing it seems like I would want the tool to expand. But the ends of the puller arms seem rounded over on the ends where I'd expect them to be sharp...

I'm thinking the roller chain wraps around, thru the grooves in the 3 arms (?)

Can you explain more, I'm just lost on how it works. Sorry.

The roller chain device looks relatively easy to make with a length of chain with cottered chain pins. Or, just a couple of master links, and makeup the squared parts.

The roller chain device looks relatively easy to make with a length of chain with cottered chain pins. Or, just a couple of master links, and makeup the squared parts.

This tool it to remove the inner race from the hub of a front wheel drive bearing assembly on a a car when replacing the wheel bearing. After pressing, slide hammering, or hub tamering the hub you are left with one of the races still stuck on the hub. Generally there is very little for a puller to grab, making it slip easily- hence the chain to hold the legs in place.

Personally I lean towards scoring the inner race with a cutoff wheel and splitting it with an air hammer.

Supporting the hub in a position where gravity will allow the race to fall and heating the race to expand it is also an option.
