try plugging it up to a obd2 car and see if it will power up, if it does your charger is dead, if not your OTC is dead.

can you explain how being plugged into the specifc car would make a difference? I thought they where meant to power on and then you would connect to your car? I am no expert so I am just asking

It will power on if you connect it to a car thru obdII, also depending on the car the key must be on. But if it doesnt work at all then you need a new unit.

I don't think the Genisys powers on with just the OBD-2 connection (if its batteries are dead).

I would check the charger for voltage. And maybe check the battery (laptops are known to not turn on when the batteries are totally dead, so could be the same).

Don't spend too much time on this problem. I agree with what's been said. But these are soon to be obsolete. You might know that already, but just wanted to add that. I've had problems when the battery is dead, and I don't think it matters what you plugged into for a vehicle. Call NAPA and see if they can talk to a tech and see what's going on with your machine. They have a pretty good tech support team. Good luck

If you need a battery, go to Radio Shack and get an RC battery for about $15. They have a battery of the exact size and connector end that fits and works perfectly. Don't spend $$$$ on OTC battery.

Mine does, as the battery will only keep the unit powered up for about 5 seconds after being unplugged.

I guess my question is now, does the battery have to be fully charged to operate this scanner even, when going off of 12 volts from car battery??? I wouldn't think so, but I could be 100% wrong, the original battery only has 7v and I don't have a charger so I could get a new one radio shack doesn't carry them anymore
