OTC Part Number Confusion - Cross-Reference Anywhere?

So, I've been picking up a few OTC pullers and other pieces here and there, and I'm noticing that the part numbers on the tools are different than the part number on their website/catalog.

Case in point:

I just got a Super Duty Pitman Arm Puller today:

https://www.otctools.com/products/super-duty-pitman-arm-puller

SKU is 6497. The box it came in is labeled 6497. The puller itself is marked 533180.

That latter number Googles as a puller, listed on a number of websites. Ironically, via 533180, Summit Racing says out of stock, but by 6497, they've got it in stock.

Anyone knows what gives with the wonky part numbering, and does anyone know of a cross-reference somewhere?

No help to you OP, but you're not alone. I've found in some cases where OTC has reused a given part number twice, producing three very different items over the years with one number.

I recommend buying a few old catalogs on ebay. It's pretty obvious what's the same and you can get some smoking deals on old part numbers compared to new. In addition my experience is the older stuff is better with OTC.

not a clue!
the pullers I post in the "ebay hot deal" thread almost always have the OLD part number on them.
maybe twertsy has some older OTC/Owatonna catalogs available for download at ToolArchives.com - you might check there and see.
(you will have to sign up as a member there to access the catalogs!)

and before you pull the trigger on that new one, check:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/OTC-OWATON...ver-Heavy-Duty-Puller-HC-642-USA/232650159305

https://www.ebay.com/itm/OTC-OWATON...m-Remover-Puller-HC-642-USA-522L/192446471708

https://www.ebay.com/itm/OWATONNA-T...ering-Arm-Remover-Puller-USA-OTC/142671519375

^ those things don't "wear out" - they just get greasy and sometimes goofballs strip the threads.

* ...and the reason you didn't find those was because you were searching for "OTC". When you search "Owatonna" you get all the stuff that the sellers (and other buyers) don't know is the same as "OTC". Ergo: reduced competition, lower prices.

My guess is that 6497 is the whole puller and the 533180 is the part # for the cross block

Will have to check that out, thank you!

Certainly plausible, but then, shouldn't the arms have a number on them, and perhaps the screw?

Maybe I'll give OTC a call today when I get a spare moment at work, and see if they have an official answer.

Edit to add:

You're certainly on to something. Looking at the current OTC catalog, there's not a lot of information about puller parts/pieces, but the same catalog has an OTC 6685 "GM In-lin 4-Cylinder Cam Tool Set, containing 19 individual pieces, and it does provide a breakdown of all of those pieces, which have 6-digit part numbers beginning with 52xxxx and 53xxxx.

Failed to call OTC this week to ask/confirm, but interesting new tidbit:

The model 7311A puller I just bought has the marking 513405 on the cross block.

The model 7310A puller that just showed up today is marked 7310A on the cross block, along with the OTC logo (missing from the 7311A).

Both made in Taiwan, if anyone is interested.

The 6497, as mentioned, is marked 533180 on the cross block, and, according to the box, is made in the USA with globally sourced components.
