Other than snap on, what's a good triple square socket set?

These aren't something that I use often, because I rarely work on German vehicles. So I'm not looking to buy the Snap On set unless things change. So what other sets are good quality but don't cost $260? Thanks in advance.

Duralast makes a good set for $25, i think from 6mm to 14mm. I have that set and the quality is excellent.

Vim or any other brand that uses S2 steel is good also.

I have the matco ones. Keep an eye out on eBay they don't sell for a ton as there more of a specialty item.

Also second the VIM sets

Funny, the only triple square I have damaged is a Snap On. It didn't break, but it's a bit twisted. Yes, I used an impact on a non-impact tool.

I have a Koken set and it's done most everything I've asked of it (no impact). If I was starting over I'd probably get one stubby set and one long set. Sometimes the Koken's are too fat/tall, other times they're too short. It's sort of like starting with semi-deep sockets. Great most of the time, but they can't replace regular and deep sockets now and then.

Metalnerd also makes some nice sets and and I have some of the specialty bits to supplement my Koken set. They also have specific impact rates bits.

I wouldn't lose sleep over the difference between Koken/Vim/Metalnerd. I think they're worth the small step up from the random rebranded stuff you see a lot off. If you're in a shop you could get by borrowing one if you break a cheap bit. If you're at home with your car half apart you might be SOL.

Unless you will need the bigger sizes 3/8 should be more likely ham enough but bigger sizes on the Audi/caliper brackets really require 1/2 drive a lot of times you can get the snap on set for 100 on dealers special I am sure most dealers still have them around

I have a matco adv and a long vim (cornwell) set. Both have performed well. Prefer the vim Had to run down my snap on guy on a Friday to get a m18 for a rear bearing bolt. Socket was 55, bit was 10. Guess who used a socket to hold the bit? Lol. I'll Probly never use that size again in my life, no way was I spending 55 dollars on it.

I have a set of Sunex impact XZN and a set of Capri XZN. Both have worked very well. The capri came in a blowmold and the Sunex came on their own little rail.

VIM, Gearwrench, or NAPA's Carlyle on sale will serve you well.

Just a thought but, no one has listed Hazet, Stahlwille, Gedore or other European brands where these fasteners are widespread on their vehicles. :dunno:

I have the short and long set from CARLYLE (Napa auto parts) and it has been good.

I've got a Napa set, though being from Canada, it is the ultra pro line. Came in a little foam pre cut square. Sockets have been strong, though they only see use a few times a year. Good enough for my use.

My hex and torx bit sockets are Mac (which I'm sure are made by Vim or someone else). I passed the last time they were on special because I never work on German cars but they often do a deal in their flyer where you buy the standard triple square and get the long triple square free. IIRC around $100.

Nice finds four.cycle. That second set looks great. I'm tempted to buy one myself! It's probably worth getting the tamper proof style for anything larger than that set anyways (if you need them at all) as they'll do both just fine.

I could be wrong, but Stahwille is probably $20-30 per bit, Hazet might be double that with Gedore somewhere in the middle. If they are cheaper than that I'd love to try some out!

I think I've seen smaller Wiha or Wera bits individually (i.e. 1/4 or 5/16" without the holder) at reasonable prices.

I have the VIM set too, on recommendation from this forum. So far it's worked perfectly the one out of one time I've needed them.
