Oulet boxes too shallow. Am I screwed?

With wood or combustible wall coverings a steel band is required to protect the combustible covering if the box is too deep. I forget what the maximum exposure is for combustible coverings but it was in the NEC the last time I looked.

NEC 314.20 says 1/4" if the wall cover is non-combustible. If a combustible surface, such as OSB or plywood, the box has to be flush with the surface

Why not just cut out your outlet openings with a utility knife, remove mud rings and replace with proper or deeper mud rings. Patch each opening as you would normally, have to anyway right? Skip the spacers and fix it now before mudding the outlets.
