I've been waiting for the day that I could actually make this post - long time lurker and we are finally done moving and I can make this garage MINE.

When my wife and I got married in 2014 we purchased our first home... a 3 bed 2 bath rambler with a 25x25 detached garage. We loved the place but ultimately knew that we would outgrow it within 3-5 years. It needed just enough updating that we'd be able to get some sweat equity in it by doing the work ourselves before we ultimately ended up selling it to move on. The garage was great... it already had a ton of storage and work benches built in so all I had to do was add my touch and it became mine.

3 years later, just as everything was finally finding its place in the garage we decided to take advantage of a hot sellers market in our neighborhood and list the house. Lo and behold, less than 24 hours on the market we had multiple offers and were under contract. Soon after, we found a great place on 3 acres of land in the middle of the woods that we absolutely loved and intended to stay in for the long term. The attached garage was smaller than the previous garage but there was plenty of room to build a detached at some point.

Within a year we were expecting our first child and everything was going great, still absolutely loving the house and starting to draw up my plans for the detached garage. After my son got old enough to interact with other kids we quickly realized that we were loading him and his things up every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to go spend time at friends houses so he could play with other kids. After 5-6 months of this, we decided that the best thing for our son was going to be in a neighborhood, where he wouldn't need to rely solely on our transportation to be able to play with his friends or have to ride a bike on a main road. It just to happens that one day when we were hanging out with friends that a house that we had always liked on the ideal street where all of our friends lived was rumored to be going on the market soon. We walked across the street and struck up a conversation with the owners, they walked us around the house, and we asked if they would consider an off market deal. They were good to go with it and so we had a path forward. As luck would have it, we mentioned that we were going to sell our house at a family gathering and my wifes aunt and uncle overheard us and said "we'll take it" on the spot... so now all of a sudden it became very real. 8-9 months later after going through all the necessary steps our old house was sold to family and we got the keys to the new house. With the new house came a 25X25 attached garage and a 30x40 detached garage.

I'll use this thread to document the things that I will be doing to the garage as well as any other projects that I do in the garage/around the house.

I've always wanted a garage that I could work in but also have the ability to kick back and relax in. After talking to my wife we decided that we would get the most use out of the garage if I finished the inside off and installed a heat/ac system. First thing to tackle was the floors, the previous owner worked on cars all the time so there were more than a few spots and stains on the garage floor. I rented a diamabrush for the floors and took all the finish off, followed by an acid etching, followed by a degreasing and a wash. After waiting 3 days to dry, I put down Rustoleum Epoxyshield in dark grey with flakes and then followed that with the clear gloss epoxy topcoat. Currently, I am in the process of installing batt insulation in the walls in preparation for finishing the walls with sanded plywood. The ceiling will either be finished with the same or with white metal roof panels. Attic area will receive blown in insulation.
Before any preparation

After diamabrush grinding

Last wash before drying

Epoxy and flakes applied

Clear epoxy top coat and most of the wall insulation complete. Panels for the walls will be delivered this week and installed after finishing the wall insulation.

Next on the to do list is to remove the overhead shelving to finish the wall insulation and install the finished plywood when it gets delivered this week. Currently going back and forth between finishing the ceiling with white metal or the same sanded plywood as the walls painted white.

Looks great so far!

As far as photos I can see them, sometimes though when viewing on mobile (tapatalk) it needs me to log in to view photos. No username/password reentry, just "login: yes / no".

I can see your pics now. Looks great nice job on the floor.

Thank you! My wife and my friends that live on the street had a good time making fun of me for how obsessive I was during the prep for the epoxy. I think it was worth it, it turned out great. My neighbor did the same prep and has had the same product on his floors for about 7 years now with no issues at all, hoping to get the same result.

Looking good! Subscribing to follow the progress. What a great space there.

I can see benefits to both ceiling choices. Regardless of the decision, when you have the white ceilings, you'll be amazed by how much brighter and nicer it will be in there! I couldn't believe the difference when I installed my drywall ceiling and painted it white. It really finished the space!

Is that your blue Blazer in the driveway in the exterior photo of the new driveway?!?

Thanks! I’m back and forth on it. I’ve been looking at some of those newer style LED light bulbs with the articulating panels and am worried that with the white ceiling it’ll be too bright, if that’s
possible.

The Blazer was actually one of three that the previous owner was rebuilding. My Dad and I actually rebuild Jeep CJ5’s when we’ve got time in between our other hobbies. I’ve got my grandfathers 1976 and my Dad has a 76, 77, and a 78.

Made some progress since my last post. I finished installing all the batt insulation in the walls and then I was able to get a great deal on some 1/2'' sanded plywood for the walls. I also came across a great deal on some 10'x3' sheets of galvalume metal for the ceiling. All of the remaining materials for the walls and ceiling should arrive this week. I know the wood walls aren't for everyone, but when all is said and done they'll be covered with hunting gear, flags, banners, etc. so it goes right along with what I like and the look that makes me happy. Went ahead and installed my NewAge cabinet set that I ordered back in July from a vendor here (shopstoragecabinets.com) and am very happy with it. Had a busy weekend getting things done and then cleaning up so one picture is all I've got.

Future plans at the moment (subject to change based on how I feel that particular day! lol):
- Finish installation of wood on the walls and metal on the ceiling
- Blown-in ceiling insulation
- 1X4 white trim for the windows and doors
- Upgrade lighting to LED
- 36k BTU minisplit unit
