We are a large dairy farm 750 milking cows plus 600 replacements and 400 steers, also have 1000 acres. we do all of our own fieldwork and all of our own repairs.

The dogs got the boot. they had a doggie door to get in and out but we couldnt get them trained to not tear everthing apart. 2 jack russells and 1 rat terrier.

Ceiling is 16' with a 20' peak IIRC. Front doors are 24x16 and 14x14. side door is 12x14

Here are two pictures of our old shop.

and more of the new shop (built in 2008), its a minor step up.

heres a closeup of the acoustisteel it costs a lot more but is definately worth it. the bottom 8 feet of our walls are covered with 3/4" plywood with a sealer on them. I reccomend this to everybody because if you ever want to build something on the wall you just put it wherever you want unless its really heavy.

The dune buggy was an employees project, its been gone for awhile now. Pulling tractor is sitting back there now.

The lift is a Rotary S10i. The "i" part stands for inbay. Like $400 more but worth every penny. It moves the motor up out of the way and it is suprisingly much quieter. And you have up and down buttons and lower to locks buttons on each side of the lift, plus a 110v plugin on one post and air supply on the other post. Only downside is that you can feather the lift when lowering it, its all or nothing. This lift has something on it 360 days out of the year and we are not an auto repair shop, but i do do a lot of diesel work on the side.

Heating is solely from waste oil. We generate a lot of it and we collect it from our neighbors and relatives. The burner is a 250,000btu Lanair. Heating is accomplished through in floor heat.

The shop is a "WiFi Hotspot" and we put a cell phone repeater in it for excellent reception. Also have a stereo system mounted in the ceiling.

The oil barrel rack is the thing we are working on now. We dont like the one thats there and would like some simple totes. We have soo many fluids to put in them that the 4 barrel rack is pretty useless. 15w40 and hydro are in 110 gallon totes that a filled up by a bulk truck. ATF, Dexcool Antifreeze, Green antifreeze, Windsheild washer fluid, 30w, 10w30, 80w90, and diesel exhaust fluid are all bought by the 55.

We did just buy a 5x9' welding table made out of 1" plate.

A couple of our favorite shop tools and best buys ever have to be the Millermatic 252, Power Probe III, Eaton hosemaker, Rotary lift, and cordless mini impacts.

We are stilll considering pulling everything out of the shop and putting in an epoxy floor covering but we are not sure if we will bite that bullet.

The 110v plugins are spaced every 5' and have 4 plugs each. There are 222 T8 light bulbs, total. Two things we new we needed in a shop we millions of outlets, and lights so bright they blind you. And we accomplished that, at nighttime in the shop we usually turn off half of the lights to tone it down a bit, it gets pretty bright.

Man, that's a great looking shop! Anytime a nice shop is posted it creates lots of questions ... how did you insulate the walls and ceiling? Do you have a wash-up sink, office area, or bathroom installed? What is you compressed air setup?

Any plans for a monorail or hoist of any kind?

What part of the country are you in?

It's great!! I'd be thrilled with you old shop, let alone the new setup!

Yes we have a bathroom and office, they are underneath the loft. They are not shown in the above pictures as they were added later. Bathroom has a deep laundry sink, multiple types of hand cleaners, toilet, and shower.

Office has all service records, computer, fridge and the dinette booth haha.

As for the hoist, we are building two large A frame ones.

Our walls are 8" thick with fiberglass insulation. Floor has insulation underneath it. Ceiling has 8" of fiberglass insulation and 16" of blow in insulation above that.

It holds the heat well. We had the oil burner go down for 2 days in single digit weather and the shop only lost 5 degrees, and we open the doors a lot and park the semis in there to thaw out at night.

Compressed air setup is an upright 80 gallon compressor plumbed with 1" Pex tubing, you can see it in the pictures, its right where the acoustisteel meets the plywood. The drops are plumbed out of Black pipe. we have both 3/8" and 1/2" hose.

From madison wisconsin area.

durallymax you just made my night. I just ordered a 60x80 barn kit from Menards. It's going up as soon as my land drys out a little. It's hard to tell the size till you see pictures of equipment inside. Did you use 2" foam under the floor? Please post more pics. I need as many ideas as possible. Thanks:thumbup:

yes the insulation was 2" IIRC I do not remember what type or what it was rated for. But it was green hard foam board.

the magazine rack was also out of the fast food restaraunt.

I'm looking into waste oil heat. Any idea how much oil you burn thru a winter? How warm do you keep the shop? How do you like the Lanair? How much maintenances is needed with it?
Thanks

I couldnt give you an exact number on what we use for oil. Depends on the temperature on a day to day basis and it is now plumbed to heat our milking parlor and preheat the water for the milking parlor. So on a sub zero day we would polish off a good 20-30 gallons.

Last year we had it just heating the shop, but it wasnt online until january. So we didnt get a good number to go off of. It wouldnt be much to just heat the shop.

In the winter we keep the shop at 55*, any higher and it gets a little toasty in there once you start working.

The Lanair is OK, dont know much about any other brands. What I can say is that it is an absolute maintenance nightmare but I think all of them are, after all you are pumping used oil through them.

I also dont like how they dont sell overhaul kits anymore, just have to buy the complete preheater assembly which is pricey and needs to be replaced annually.

I know this is an old thread, but looking at shop lighting, do you know how many lumens, or footcandles you have? I have looked at a few lighting threads on here, but I haven't been able to get a good answer. All a matter of opinion I guess. But like you, I want lots of light.
