Use that general idea and look around craigslist and industrial surplus places close to you for stuff that might be available. We had one place with hundreds of pallet sized, open cages that were stackable, that they sold for basically scrap steel prices.....
The place I get my pallet racking from is an industrial surplus place. I'll have to ask them about metal cages instead. If they could stack easily that'd be amazing !!

Steps are mostly in as well 😃

Day 1 progress. Not bad.

Got it all down !! Looks like a football stadium up here :lol_hitti

It’s -15f but the moo’s are hungry so out I go. Brrrrrr.

An old coworker passed away suddenly and his funeral was last Saturday. We all joked that if he could pick the weather this is exactly what he’d have picked.

Sorry to hear about the coworker. The loft looks great! Hopefully the cold hasn't been damaging to anything. Definitely slowed things down here for us.
He was in remission from cancer a few years back and got a nasty cold and went in and didn’t come home. We can’t help but feel something went wrong in the hospital but I’m not a doctor so all I can, and will, do is speculate.

Cold hasn’t damaged anything “so far”. A few more nights of below zero but even the +3f that it was today felt nice after -15f and wind.

In the last 24hrs I’ve gone from mostly healthy and perky to achy and cranky and coughing and ugh. Hopefully it goes away quickly. I have stuff to do !!

It’s been good loft building weather in Mn lately it’s looking good
Yes it has !! It’s always a balmy 56f in the shop !!

First goodness of the 4’ cantilever on the end of the loft was this pallet of shelving. The loft sagged less than 1/8”. I don’t know how much it weighs but it’ll be the heaviest thing here for a long time. I couldn’t lift it so it must weigh at least 65lbs. At least. Likely more.
IMG_0351.jpeg

I couldn’t find my eyes cut out ski mask so I improvised. It worked quite well actually !! Kept the wind off and the warm breath was nice.
IMG_0379.jpeg

10ish hours of warmth in there while it’s -15f and windy. Can’t argue with that. The firey beast is saving $30-35 day right now vs burning LP
IMG_0380.jpeg

The steaks are getting freezer burnt.
IMG_0383.jpeg

The upper flue and stack were getting a bit gummy so I light it on fire :rocketwho
IMG_0396.jpeg

I have two more shelves to put up here and I’ll be out of legs. I think there will be 14 in all. Sweet.
IMG_0400.jpeg

Pops and I went to Runnings today and I saw this and it made me giggle. An employee asked if I needed help and said “nope I was just figuring out how many of these I’d need each day to heat my house”. She said “most people get a few days out of a single bundle of that helps”. “Thanks but I was doing the math on what a PALLET of bundles costs so I can justify my wood cutting time to Mama Bear 😂

Haha because it’s not the Walmart of poisonous critters and when its nice out we forget
Yeah totally agree. Crazy how when spring rolls around we totally forget how miserable winter likely was. Can’t really complain too loudly about this one. Negative temps are unlikely in February so once we’re through this cold snap hopefully we’re good !!

We live were the air hurts our faces so that we don't have to deal with creepy crawly's that are better suited to be in sci-fi films lol.

On your firewood storage issue, I had a couple thoughts.
The price you said for a shed, was that a stick built structure? Have you priced a fabric hoop building? I would think that would make a really nice firewood shed and should cost a lot less than that.
For moving firewood, a lot of people are using the IBC totes that you guys likely get chemicals in. You cut out the plastic liner and use the steel cage to hold the firewood, and you can stack them 3 high.

Almost $1 per stick. Nice for a romantic evening in front of the fireplace.

Do folks not burn corn in your area or has the price hurt economics of that?

What thickness is your flooring on the loft? Looks really good.

You mentioned the sag. Of course steel sags a lot more than wood for the same strength beam. Aren't your primary beams steel?

If you guy want to try something that will help keep you warm and not sweat, get something like this:

It's Nomex, doesn't make you itch like some of the other synthetic stuff will. You can pull it up over your mouth when you need too and pull it off your face without removing it as well. I've got one and it's been well worth the money to me. They've got about a hundred different styles and ratings available, along with some other materials. I stick with the Nomex due to the itch factor.

I put a filter from a 260 on it so not THAT different lol I had to take the strange bulky tank vent off and replaced it with a short chunk of hose and a vent for an Echo string trimmer. It also required the filter cover from a 260 to contain it all. The filters are easier to find and breathe better. I have parts ordered to see if I can get a carb and filter assembly from a 261 to fit. The filter on the 026 and 260 both have the choke built into the filter and it’s causing me some head scratching …..
2023-12-05 07.57.48.jpg
I upgraded to the larger filter a few days ago, my choke worked just fine. I have read some people needed to move the 026 filter internals over to the 260 filter to fix the choke problems with this mod.

The shed was a stick built three sided shed with 12’ sidewalls and a single man door.

A fabric building is a great idea but it’s need to be more of a conventional building style as the stove is set off to the far side of the concrete pad. Not a bad idea though !!

I already use 30 something IBC totes for firewood and they work amazing but are a tad small for what I’m after. When it’s **** cold and windy a tote lasts two days. I’d like a weeks worth of wood at least in a container so I don’t have to keep 150 totes around lol.

The pallet racking setups I’m thinking of building should hold just north of a cord of wood so having 25-30 of them will more than get me though a winter. Damn stove will gobble a cord a week when it’s cold. Granted that is mostly crappy box elder, cottonwood, pine and poplar so I’m sure some nice ash, oak, or maple would make a HUGE difference.

Corn stoves were all the rage when corn was $1.60/bu but better prices have shut most of them down. I explored the idea of a giant outdoor corn stove but I think I figured it’d eat 10bu/day when it was cold out. I can burn LP cheaper than that so that idea never made it past the calculator.

Loft floor is 3/4” cheapo Menards OSB and thanks for the kind words !!

Primary beams are 1930’s steel I-Beams and will hold up a dealership of 1930’s Model A’s. The end 4’ is cantilevered 2x8’s and I was worried about sag when I set stuff on it. I was rather excited that there was almost none with that huge pile of metal shelving sitting on it. If it all sags a little I’m not too worried. I had an engineer sign off on the documents. I gotta go get a picture of Leo in his train conductor costume with a paper that says “All good!” now.

I’ve not heard of Nomex before but I will definitely be ordering some. I’ve been a wool fan for a long time but it has definite drawbacks. Like being itchy.

I re-read your post. The head scratcher is the 261 choke, carry on!
Yeah. Haven’t figured it out yet !! More of a “I want it to work so I’ll make it work” deal than anything so we’ll see. I found a pair of toasted 026 cylinders that I’m being sent for nothing to try my hand at porting before I tackle my good OEM one. Rather excited about that as well !! Going to be a little ripper when I get done !!

Nomex has been around for a lot of decades. It's the primary material in fire retardant clothes for flight crews and for race car drivers. It is a synthetic, but I have never heard of anyone having an itch problem with it, like some do with wool or rayon type blends.

In the case of the hoods I linked to, they have a fairly large cape area for under an outer garment that will keep it anchored well and prevent any draft getting under it. The face hole is large enough that if you need it off your head for a short time, you can simply pull it back with your entire head thru that hole. Love mine, and our boys were so enamored with it, they had to have their own for cold days and being outside.

BTW....If you use that link I posted, go up to the toolbar, select PPE, then Hoods, as they offer 172 different ones....

Nomex is also used in refineries to improve survival in a flash fire. Since you can't plan for a fire you wear it all the time. I still have my last four sets of shirts and pants in the closet. But this is relatively thin material, no protection from cold.

So if you look for Nomex watch for what it is intended for use, fire retardant does not mean insulating thickness.

Id stay away from nomex if you can. You might be able to get away with 100%cotton. Nomex degrades and breaks down over time and has Forever chemicals. There other stuff out there.

Fire retardant properties do break down, primarily with washing and contamination by flammable fibers like cotton but the fabric lasts a long time. Cotton tends to rot in storage so may not last as long.

With Global Warming we shouldn't need cold weather gear much longer however, so it's a trade off.

Sure hope that’s not accurate ….. it was three days ago and I’m not dead yet so it either wasn’t accurate or I’m tough, or dumb, or both. I took my temp every 15 minutes after seeing this and it was 102.9ish for a few hours. Too sick to drive in so I just stayed put in my comfy chair and watched Letterkenny. I sure am ready for spring 🥴

Whilst in a feverish haze my JD sales guy called and asked if I wanted to go forward with the lawnmower purchase we had talked about a few days back. I said well yeah !! So now I have a Deere 2038r on the way. Yay !!
IMG_0479.jpeg

I told Mama Bear we purchased a new lawnmower and she hasn’t said anything yet. I took a screenshot to prove it when she says “you never told me we actually bought it !?!?” Yes, yes I did. It counts.
IMG_0461.png

I received a goodie box from someone on ArboristSite. 10 chains and two cylinders to practice porting on. Sweet.
IMG_0466.jpeg

Time to clean the shop!! I’m hosting a Christmas party for a bunch of peeps from my past job and anyone else that wants to come eat food and drink beer.
IMG_0476.jpeg

Been doing the annual party late January since the first year the shop was standing. It’s a good reason to clean things like the garage doors.

That's a hell of a lawn mower! 37ish HP and a loader! My buddy has a 1025 and 2038 for his landscaping business, both have been great tractors.
I went in to order a 1025r and was upsold a wee-bit. In my defense I feel like I held back as I also priced a 3046r but didn’t want to spend the extra $9k on what looked like basically the same tractor. Same motor, very similar weight and dimensions. Gonna have to get the ‘R tuned it seems 🤤

That's a heck of a lawn mower! That thing would likely bury itself in the wet spots in my yard lol.

Though I'm surprised you didn't spring for the cab? You could have spent your lawn mowing time this summer in air conditioned bliss.
The cab never honestly made it into my thought process. I started shopping for a Deere 455 and ended up here somehow.

Besides, buying a cab sort of takes the fun out of cutting grass and the heat. Not sure I want to give up the experience of getting grass clippings blown down my neck when it’s hot and humid out.

It’s on my list, not yet.
Oh bump it to the top !!

The little ones need to grow up with this experience also. Think of the children!

Right !! Can’t spoil them too much. I still have the hoodless LX176 and the Hustler so they’ll have something to use.

Nice attempt at burying the purchase of your mower in the middle of a text. How's that working out for ya...:bounce:
So far so good !!

She’ll get on it this summer and use it and not think twice. She’s a very smart lady but when it comes to certain things she’s completely oblivious. She brought us lunch to the field last fall and rode with for a little while and finally asked “didn’t this tractor used to be red?” Without trying to sound like too much of a smarty pants I said “no, THIS one has always been green”. Big ol’ Mama Bear eye roll!!
