We were all having a good time !!



A tree service buddy asked if he could drop off some wood and I said of course !! All ash and silver maple. Can’t say no to that !


Today he showed up with more again. I may have to tell him to pump the brakes lol. I officially have enough wood on hand for two years and that feels amazing !!


This morning I started in on cutting up the ash, poplar and box elder that we took out of the fence line I’ve shown in here a while back. The plan is to cut it and pitch it back onto a pile as I go. So far it’s working really well !! This whole pile was cut on one tank of fuel with my 026. That little thing just keeps running and running and running lol

Over the next few weeks I plan to cut a tank of fuel through a different saw each day until this is all bucked into firewood lengths. I’ll get some of my winter weight off and my pile of wood will be cut up. Win win !!


This was a tank through the good ol’ 026. Towards the end I was just waiting for it to run dry. I was poopered out lol


Since I’m a glutton for punishment I decided to wake up the 066, toss on the 32” bar and get after a few big chunks in the basement of the old house. Boy howdy I enjoy this saw !! Turns wood into hamster bedding like it was built for it.


Before supper I went after some more with the 041. I was waiting for a dude to show up to see what it would take to poke a 12” hole under the road so I can run a water line to an irrigator on the other side. Mildly excited about that. Spoiler, he thought around $3k to bore and pull a 12” sleeve. Not as much as I was expecting but I really didn’t know what to expect

Yes it is really strange to have had bare ground almost all winter.

That is a seed delivery van, kid hauler, calf hauler (only once), saw hauler, plywood/lumber hauler, and even a 7' skid loader tiller hauler once. If it fits it ships !!! Minivan's are cheap and oh so handy.

Yep - they are remarkably reliable as well. My grandparents always had two...my grandfather would buy two new ones every 10 years...rip all the seats out of one the day he drove it home and treat it like his pickup truck. That poor minivan hauled all of the materials for every bit of a 400 foot shoreline bulkhead on their waterfront. The other one was for more civilized events.

We’ve been doing a Friday movie night in the shop for a little while now and continued that tradition last night with Angry birds. We all have a good time and I enjoy the downtime with the kids !!


The brakes on Mama Bears Subaru were starting to get a bit warbly so I ordered up some PowerStop Z23 pads and rotors for the fronts. I’ve used these in the past and they’re an excellent aftermarket product !!



Now to celebrate with a Papa Murphys pizza for lunch !!

No snow in Minnie so dah doesn’t seem right. That said it looks like you’re getting a good head start on the firewood pile by keeping your saws running.

I used 2 minivans to remodel our house and haul stuff til I bought a couple Honda CRV then a Honda pilot with a small trailer. Minivans barely made it to 100k but Hondas still had plenty of life left when I sold at 250k to opt for a newer one.

Best of luck with the farm activity this year and you’ve got so many different businesses out there it’s hard for you to fail or have a spare minute. Family nights (and days) are the best so keep them on your schedule.

Acquired a pair of 1,600gal cone bottom tanks from my dirt work guy. He purchased a semi trailer to use for storage not knowing what was inside and these were in there. He called and asked if I wanted them and I said hell yes !! They’re $3-4k each new and I paid him WAY less than that for both. Who’s got two thumbs and is a happy camper !! This guy


Acquired a cherry brush mower for $855. Can’t argue with that !

Moved it from one place to another mostly.


This load made the little guy grunt a bit


Headed to the local green paint warehouse and gawked at the goodies from the lookout above.

Snow storm round one. Middle Miss and I did chores with an amazing sunset to watch.


Snow storm rounds 2 - 4 getting plowed. I had to use the tractor as it was wet heavy stuff that the skiddy wanted nothing to do with.


Park it in the shed to let it thaw out. I can’t go out until it’s dry again so I’ll drink beer until it’s dry. I’ll turn into a puddle while it dries out lol


In Mn we call this “4th winter”. It’s been here, melted and snowed again at least 4 times so far this winter season lol


Yesterday was barn cleaning day. This monster wagon sure helps to make short work of this crappy job

Nothing quite like the smell of good poop

Ain’t nothing quite like the satisfaction of a good day of choring !! Especially seeing the cattle run back in the pen with all the fresh new bedding. They jump around like a bunch of kids waiting for a slice of birthday cake

Winter here has been really strange. Almost no snow and only a weekish of below zero. I’m okay with all that other than the lack of moisture going into an already dry year. Mother Nature will do what she wishes no matter what we say. And that is why we went to the closest Valley Irrigation dealer a few weeks back to get a few projects rolling

We have friends that live 25min away that have horses the kids ride from time to time. That’s enough horses for me.

I do my best to eat twice as much meat as I need everyday to cancel out at least one vegan.

Same friends with horses have a few hogs they keep around to butcher. A few times now we’ve had them raise one for us and mmmmmmm they’re good eating !!

Here we are !! Thanks for stopping in. I went back and read it all a few months ago when I was sicker than a dog and it was fun seeing what’s changed and how I’ve changed. Hopefully Ryan keeps this forum alive so my kids can dig through this all one day !!

My kiddos love helping out and as frustrates it is slowing down to help them along it’s amazingly rewarding seeing them doing things and remembering how my Dad and Grandpa did the same for me.

Ask whatever questions you may have even if they’re from posts from years ago. I have a decent memory and as much as things have changed around here, a lot has stayed the same.

This was a bit ago before it snowed but they decided to dig out a rock in the front yard. I remember burying that rock and they ain’t getting it out with a shovel and a scrap of rebar


A few days ago I started cutting metal for another thing for me to practice my welding skills on.


It’s going to be a giant “That Way” arrow …..


Or a receiver hitch mover deal for the overpriced iMatch hitch deal for the new lawnmower we named Chad. I think m going to cut up a few of these giant concrete anchor deals to make the top attachment.



It’s going to be named Chad after a guy I used to work with. Just like Chad, it really brings nothing to the team that I can’t do with something else, it’s not that big so I doubt it’ll be super useful, it’s hydrostatic so it whines when it has to work hard and it kind of smells like a skunk what with the emissions stuff on it. It’s too perfect. There are VERY few people I do not care for or get along with or just avoid in general, he was one of those guys. Only reason NOT to name it Chad is I’d have a constant reminder of that ***** in my life. We shall see if it sticks.

The “T444e” was very similar to the PowerStroke but was more on the medium duty truck side if I’m not mistaken. Mostly same internals but different stuff with the fuel systems. Like the similarities the Cummins 8.3l in my Freightliner and the 2388 Combine share. Same motor but very different fuel systems.

I’ve been hunting for a Kenworth cab over to toss a flatbed on but haven’t found the right thing yet. Walter needs some trans work AGAIN so we’ll see how long the sticks around OR what it’ll take to put a 10spd in there instead of that damn auto.

Daughter and Granddaughter played volleyball, still spending time at the gym. Granddaughter coaches local Christian high school and independent 14/15 y/o travel team. Good Sport and a good opportunity for girls to get college $$$$ help!

last week was recruited to help 89y/o brother in law repair/replace 1/8 mile of fence. Quickly determined wood posts were rotten beyond repair, project delayed pending delivery of wood posts.

The technician that installed the 3rd function kit on my lawnmower smushed this o-ring so I had to have him take it apart and fix it. Big dummy


Once it was leak free I hooked onto a wagon and loaded up around 200bu of oats. It’ll get cleaned and used for seed this spring. This little tractor is quite a bit more capable than I thought it would be. It grunted and snorted and tugged that wagon without too much fuss.


Mama Bear dropped me off to pick Walter up from his annual checkup and I took ‘em out fer a rip !! Blowing black smoke on all the little old ladies and such lol.



Hooked the oats wagon on and used Walter like the road tractor I always hoped he’d be to deliver it 7ish miles away.


Kiddos asked to play in the mud when they got home and I asked them why they weren’t playing in the mud right now !! In they went lol

Tuesday morning sometime my Plex server and TrueNAS server both updated and something went stupid and they don’t want to talk to each other. And for some reason my automatic backups weren't working properly as the only backups that were being made were the internal ones on the TrueNAS server ….. which I can’t read/write to at the moment. Grrrrrrr. Also, I’m 2yrs behind on upgrading the drives in the main array due to the house build consuming me two yrs ago and I just plain forgot. So now I really should replace the main array drives and the backup array drives as they’re all past their scheduled replacement date. I usually upgrade in terms of capacity as well so I should go from 14tb drives to at least 18tb drives or even 20’s to future proof the main array turning into the backup array in 2yrs and having enough space for it all. I just priced out 16x20tb drives and almost threw up. The 8x14tb drives back in 2020 weren’t inexpensive then either but jeez lol.

So I’m debating on getting a much simpler Synology NAS box and running that as a storage server only while still using my NUC running Debian as a Plex server. That’d be more money in the short term but I could use the TrueNAS box as the backup box and …… argh lol

On a fun note a new AGI 10x36 load out auger came into our world a little while ago and it’s time on the to do list has time. Going to slap a motor on there and move some grain !!

Currently at 8x14Tb drives in RAID10 in the main array which produces around 52Tb of usable space. Half is “lost” for parity. The other array is for backup and currently has 8x10Tb drives for around 37Tb of usable space. The backup array is at 99% (which is why my backups died a few months back I just figured out duh) so I need more space in both arrays. New array with 8x20Tb will have around 72Tb of usable space.

4k movies eat 45-60Gb each so it adds up quick. The 1080p movies I have eat around 3Gb for the lower quality ones and up to 6-7Gb if they have Atmos or DTS.

The Plex pool alone is eating up 90%+ of the space with pictures and other stuff making the rest. I have 20yrs of digital data on that thing so it’s rather important to have it all backed up and secure.
