JBL: I need to catch up on your posts and even though it's snowing and cold it seems like you still work 24/7.

I took a few weeks off GJ thinking it might give me a bit more time to cure my FSD and get in my garage and instead i ended up spending the extra time eating all my bride's goodies so I'M BACK to starting off my day with some good reading and your thread is always got something interesting going on. so i'm a little heavier and still need to cure my FSD, but hopefully will make a lot of progress in 2020.

best of luck in 2020 and I hope all the machines and crops do as well or better than this last year and also I hope you and your family is healthy and active as ever.

cheers!!

Cattle need to be tended to and chickens need to be cared for no matter the weather. It keeps me busy which is almost always good

Lol on the goodies. I tend to go a little nuts from Thanksgiving through Christmas each year and pack on a few pounds as well :lol_hitti

Thanks for the well wishes. I also hope all goes smoothly this year but time will tell. Hopefully we'll have a nice warm space to work in by the time it gets cold out again next fall. The family seems to be as healthy as can be and we're all only getting more active with the little people getting bigger all the time :bounce:

Nothing too wild and crazy to report other than that it snowed, rained, snowed, rained, sleeted, slopped and rained some more for a few days and made a NASTY mess of everything. I have 4" deep puddles in the yard that are now solid ice and around 2" of frozen bumpy slush everywhere else. Gonna me a mess when it all thaws out !!

JBL: my bride and I raised 5 adults so i'm well aware of the roller coaster type ride of PARENTING. from my chair you including them in your daily chores and allowing them to have a little fun too is setting a good pattern for the future.

maybe the best thing I learned about raising adults is to try and monitor or control a bit WHO THEY HANG OUT WITH cause they end up being like that other kid for the most part and usually if the other kid or their parents do not have good habits or morals that tends to come into your home too. don't do the helicopter parenting cause they do need to learn, but when there are choices you can make for them or control just step in and help.

for instance I'd drive my son to play on a lake with one of his friends that was 45 minutes away instead of just letting him play with a few of the neighbor kids that were sneaking around and a bit untrustworthy. then when the neighbor kids were around I tried to help them get a bit better and just having a parent around usually can help a lot. when the twins arrived we had 2 teenage boys (12 & 14) and a 2 year old girl so at that point my wife quit her good job and also sold her gift shop biz to stay home with the kids for 14 years before going back to work when the twins were in 7th grade. the kids know their mom and me not so much, but our family get togethers usually are fun and don't have much drama.

best of luck to your and your bride cause your crew should be a handful and maybe more than 1000 cows or chickens.

it's been warm and windy here so maybe in a few days you'll get a little warmer weather.

cheers (I drink a gallon of this Morrocan mint green tea in a cold old A&W mug every day)

Wow, gotta catchup! Merry christmas and happy new year of course. That JD 830 is worth $10-15,000 if its in good running condition, which it must be if he runs it daily. Wait til you see one of those pistons sitting on a desk, they are massive. Kinda nice to be able to stick your entire head inside the cylinder to check things out. And yeah, they sip fuel nice and slow.

Corn burners: Beware. I had a little experience with one at my last job, and that damn burner was a $%^&( to run and deal with. Corn didn't like to feed well, had a tendency to kick the auger apart in the middle of the night and leave a mess in the morning for us. It took forever to get lit, and it clogged sometimes. The company spent more money paying us to babysit that corn burner than they would've in propane. They have improved I think since then, but do your homework first. An outside burner would probably tend to freeze up and corn won't feed. Im sure there is a workaround for that by now.

It may be worth looking into bale stoves too. There are burners that take entire round bales and burn them over a couple days. I know they take haybales, but probably corn stalks too?

Skiddy might need some counterweight with that bucket full of wet snow or manure.
Oh yeah it had it's shorts full with that big bucket full of slop !! I guess I intended it to be used with Dad's S185 when using it for manure and I'd use his 7' bucket.

5 kids sounds like a nightmare. 3 seems like PLENTY most of the time !!

I couldn't agree more with who they hang out with is VERY important. Little people are easily influenced and can quickly adopt bad habits. We hope the kids will still like us enough to want to have friends over here instead of them going elsewhere all the time. At least that way we can be in a little control anyway.

I'd be in for some warmer weather to melt all this slop that fell and froze SOLID !! It's going to be a HUGE mess when it all thaws out !!

A gallon of tea a day ?!?! Yikes that seems like a lot !!

The 830 is in great shape and has been maintained by them for decades already. They have no idea how many hours are on it but it pretty much gets used daily to do something. It sits on the silage blower in the fall when they fill silos and they even use it to pull a 450bu graviety box in the fall. They have some VERY nice new green iron on the farm but use the older 2cyl stuff whenever they can. It's fun and cheap to run.

I think by the time I pencil out the cost of the equipment (stove, piping, bulk bin for corn) and look how long it's going to last I can just burn propane. The same company that fills the tanks by the chicken barn fills my house tank and they give us a decent discount because they're on the property anyway. Last fall when I checked I was paying $0.35/gal less than corn drying gas for my house gas. Not bad and it makes it hard to pencil out a wood or corn boiler.

I've read about and seen pictures of a few bale stoves but from what I've heard they like nice clean straw, not corn straw that's full of rocks and dirt. That'd be a neat undertaking though !!!

I was too embarrassed to take a before picture of this wall mount enclosure so here is the first one after the new, well slightly used, enclosure is on the wall. The guy that installed the other one a few years back didn't do a very good job and used too small a box which left no room for upgrades. I wish I wasn't that guy but you win some and lose some :lol_hitti
49329050827_69cae841de_z.jpg

Day one after all wires were punched down I just threw it all in there to close it up for the night.
49329050202_1c9cb72a50_z.jpg

Finished product looks decent :dunno:
49329050367_3cea47323f_z.jpg

I reused the 24-port patch panel as there wasn't anything wrong with it. Add in a couple nice brush panels for to make it look pretty and a US-16-150w switch and you've got a good start. THEN add in a UNVR4 from the Ubiquiti Beta store and put 4x8Tb surveillance drives in it and you've got yourself a VERY nice setup !!!
49329050577_7e3c876b64_z.jpg

The camera system will have 8 cameras total on it. 4-UVC G3's, 1 UVC G3 with IR extender, 1-UVC Flex, 1 G3 PRO and 1 G4 PRO. They will all be installed 2 to a pen in their 4 maternity pens. The idea is to be able to monitor when they calve and keep an eye on things. The different camera types is something I talked the customer into so I can test the other camera types in a real world environment to see what works best where. I'm pretty excited to be able to "play" with them like this and really appreciate the customer letting me do this. The wall enclosure is in a VERY dusty room where the baby calves are brought right after birth to warm up and dry off. I think I'm going to have to make regular trips here to clean the box out but that is a small price to pay to have the equipment in the only warm room on the property.

Or, you tee into the family farm dryer propane tank and let your great uncles and aunts pay for heating the house that you haven't paid rent on for two + years :( Lol the black sheep side of the family LOL

If the house was closer to the chicken barn I just might be tempted to find a way to tee into that set of tanks :lol_hitti

LOL Where there is a will, there is a way … as the story goes … young man got denied service from local propane company until cash before delivery and then, half the cash would be applied to outstanding balance and half delivered. No cash, no propane and Sunday morning the house tank runs out. Enterprising young man goes to his father in laws White Equipment dealership, borrows a LP tractor, fill it up at the dealership and takes it home. At home, hooks up the LP tractor tank to the house line. Every thing is going to plan until it comes to lighting the water heater. Then there is an issue of an inspection opening, a face in the opening, a lighted match and a flashback. Luckily only loss of eyelashes, eyebrows and a sunburnt face.

Dad started collecting 1/64th scale little tractors back in the 70's and I've tried my best to add to the collection with a few gifts each year .... and a couple randomly here and there just for fun. We've been working on getting them organized. We spent a few hours working on it today and took most of them off the shelves to add the new ones in :bounce:
49356307143_4e402f0bc0_z.jpg

We lined them all up on the bar in order from oldest to newest model years and models and put them in the shelves :)
49356766356_3e612f656c_z.jpg

So far most of the non-articulating 4wd ones are in here.
49336625608_3b7ce6b3ae_z.jpg

Combines and a few left out to play with. Leo was "helping" and needed some distractions to keep focused
49337091646_12c7dc61a3_z.jpg

Gotta have a few Bud's in the collection :bounce:
49337311572_83bb5c9627_z.jpg

Really need some more green of every color in this one !!! The pictures are all blurry because of the plexiglass

I happened to be at a meeting in Kansas City, Mo. just after International and Case merged. When word got out the company was giving out a special toy tractor to each dealership to commemorate the occasion, a feeding frenzy of activity to accumulate said toys broke out in the lobby. Wonder what they are worth today?

WOW! What a collection, I'm green with envy.
Would be interesting to know how many of the real 64ths your Dad has operated.
Me too. I can list a bunch but have no idea how many different tractors he's driven in his lifetime !!

I'm pretty sure there were a few models given out. A 1/16th scale 2594 and a 3294 are ones I know of. They actually don't bring that much $$$$. The 2594's and 3294's will only fetch $40-$70. Those two models were given out at the Las Vegas meeting, if something different was given out in Kansas City I have no idea what it was !!!

The ones a guy should have invested in are the 1/16th scale Big Buds. The 760hp 16v747 1st run was around $350 in the mid 90's and they bring well over $1000 today. It is a MONSTER of a toy tractor and I'd love to have one but am no way no how paying that for a toy !!

Here are a few pics of the dealer edition tractors ...

Dad custom shelled corn with Minneapolis Moline Sheller. High school friend tracked me down and told me he was going to a toy auction and they had MM sheller for sale. Did he want me to bid on it? Sure, what do you think it will bring? Less than $100. Ok, go for it. Call me to say he dropped out at $400 (YIKES!!)
and it brought $500. Crazy!!

He did send me a yardstick as a consolidation prize!

I figured that went without saying and it seems like that message got across at least to you :lol_hitti

I think between John Deere, CaseIH, Kubota, Feed guys, Cattle Hauler guys, Leedstone (off farm job) and a few others I have something silly like 15 2020 calendars already.

JBL: are you mini tractors and combines and vehicles made 100% plastic or guessing maybe some metal?

just curious if you get one with every tractor and combine purchase? :bounce:

I bet LEO was wanting to play with them all and are some on the NO TOUCH SHELF and does he and the girls know which ones those are?

i can't recall if you are football fan and i'm more so now because my wife likes our Seahawks, but it looks like your Vikings might have pulled off a huge upset.

I must have sent you some warm weather cause we are getting snow and ice in our lowlands today.

cheers

Most are mostly diecast metal with plastic details and such. There are a few that are entirely plastic but they're made by a different manufacturer. Most are made by Ertl.

We have one of most of the tractors we've owned and a few came from the dealer when they were new.

The kiddos know which ones are for playing and which ones are not. They play with the duplicates and trailers and such. They don't seem to care as long as they have something to play with :)

Well they're someone's Vikings but I don't follow along close enough to pretend that they're mine lol.

It was barely a week ago these first few pictures were taken but it feels like way longer. I guess I should come here more often :lol_hitti

Using the VP Racing cans for the first time !!!
49401161447_8f048f393d_z.jpg

Dad was using my skiddy and new bucket to clean some pooooooop away from the walls in the chicken barn.
49400482303_ff41d83220_z.jpg

It actually worked pretty well. He dumped it in a windrow and I picked it up with the housekeeper. The housekeeper only gets within a few feet of the wall so we've been trying different things each flock to see what works best and I think we finally found it !!
49400482428_4b2d1d9415_z.jpg

Last Sunday we vaccinated some cattle. I purchased 30 head averaging 418lbs so along with the 19 I had already we had to run 49 through the chute. We don't usually do things like this on Sunday's but Saturday's high temp was a chilly -10F and Sunday was a balmy 5F so we decided to wait until Sunday !!
49400960916_8a2f519f2e_z.jpg

Sort of a blurry picture as my phone doesn't like the cold. I put two bottles of HOT water in the cooler where I kept the vaccines to keep them from freezing and becoming no good. We vaccinate them all with a few things but they all target the prevention of respiratory issues.
49401161872_edcb41fc05_z.jpg

Monday I went back up North to work on a robot farm project we've got going by Macintosh, MN. I brought food for all again and we started the week off with some French Toast and good ol' potatoes and onions for breakfast.
49401160702_997bd0491d_z.jpg

After I took this picture I looked at it and thought, "Gee, some of that looks like **** yet. I best fix that!!" Well I didn't take a "fixed that" picture so here it is sort of sloppy with wires everywhere yet :wtf:
49400960021_c96f607228_z.jpg

The front side of the main rack doesn't look too bad. The patch cables were cold coming out of my van and I went back later on in the week to redo them once they warmed up. I like things in neat straight lines and this bugged me enough to fix it before I left. Again, no final picture so I guess you'll just have to trust my level of OCD is great enough that I actually did make it a lot nicer :lol_hitti
49400959956_d3f43e0c71_z.jpg

Tuesday for lunch I tried something new on the Wok. Hot ham and cheese with onions and bacon.
49401160397_a644b09557_z.jpg

Yup. It was a hit. We had it again for lunch on Wednesday :drool::drool:
49400481293_f730576d33_z.jpg

Mama Bear sent me a picture of a piece of schoolwork that Lily did on Wednesday. I'll just leave this here and say she made me smile pretty wide :bounce:
49400959456_d0512e7b4d_z.jpg

It never fails. I always forget something. The nice double decora faceplates with inserts for this box are in a package sitting in my basement 4hrs from where I need them
49400960081_e4bedbc040_z.jpg

Dinner on Wednesday we went all out. Homemade hot dogs fried in bacon and butter with potato salad. Mmmmmmmm
49400959886_aea4126b57_z.jpg

The hotel we stayed at was a former old folks home and had a full kitchen we could use. We used it a few times but mostly cooked on the jobsite. It is amazing to have access to something like this though !!

Thursday morning it was a tid bit nippy .....
49401161222_7c013dd959_z.jpg

Today it decided to snow. We're supposed to get 8-10" when it's all done. Gross :puke:

I put the ol' 763 to work tonight for a while. We've only gotten 6" maybe but I figured it's all got to get moved so may as well do some now. I've never had a bucket with a bolt on smooth cutting edge and it took a bit of getting used to it before I found that sweet spot where it cut in but still glided nicely over the snow so I could actually push with it !!

Hey now! If you keep posting food photos like that incredible sounding ham, cheese and bacon sandwich :drool: I just may have to quit my job and move to Minnesota to work at your company. :bounce: That looked like a lot of grub, how many people were working on that job?
The French toast and potatoes looked like a greaaat way to start your day!
What kind of cheese was on the sandwich?

Lol. Come on over !!

There were only 4 of us out there last week and we're a hungry bunch so we cleaned it all up each meal. Plus it was COLD in the barn so we needed the energy or at least that's how we justified eating that much :lol_hitti

Yeah the sandwiches were a hit !!! I first laid bacon out around the edges of the pan, 2 slices per sandwich, then melted butter in the bottom of the Wok, then drug the bread through the butter pool and put it on the edge to start to fry. After the bread was all buttered I started the onions. While they were cooking I put some extra sharp cheddar cheese and honey smoked ham on half the pieces of bread. As soon as the bottoms were all golden brown the onions and bacon went on and they went together. Damn it was tasty !!!

I couldn't agree more. If only we could get away eating like that all the time !!!

You seem to be getting quite good at cooking on that wok! Damn I'm hungry!

It cooks just like a giant cast iron pan so it was an easy thing to figure out. I sure do love my cast iron !!

"They" were talking about some nasty snowy stuff for Friday/Saturday and "they" were correct for once. It was windy and COLD and snowing from Friday noon until Saturday afternoonish. Gross.

When it's -5F with 30-40mph winds you need to dress accordingly. The -5F is no big deal but the wind makes frostbite a concern after less than 10 minutes :shocking:

Saturday morning Dad and I gave the critters all some fresh bedding. The wind had blown a lot of snow into the pens and we don't want them getting cold and wet. Bedding is cheap compared to sick cattle !!

Saturday evening we went to a fundraiser for the school we send Miss Lily to. There is a REALLY fancy meal, silent auction, live auction and this year there was a BRAND NEW 2020 Polaris Ranger XP1000 that was raffled off. Polaris donated 100% of it as long as the school agreed to put the money towards a new STEM lab. The raffle tickets all sold and brought in $35,000 alone !!! Thank you Polaris for doing this !!! A few things we thought were neat at the silent auction included this portable game of Carbles that looks to use Cribbage pins. Super cool !!

This is Aaron. He's been a close friend since we were both in Kindergarten and he and his Mrs stopped over today for breakfast and to plan a trip for our families this spring. At the live auction last night at the fundraiser there were 2 -4pks of tickets to all the attractions at the Mall of America and we ended up bidding against each other for them. Once we realized what was going on it became a game of who ducks out first lol. I ended up winning the bid and the auctioneer asked if I wanted one pack or both and I hollered across the gymnasium, "Hey Aaron, do you want to go with us ?!?!" He threw up a thumbs up and I said I'd take both packs. Everyone clapped and cheered for some reason. Well, most of the people knew we were buddies and our kids are the same age so maybe they figured out what happened before we did lol.

I believed I've created a wok chef! :lol_hitti:beer:

I knew some guys that ate like that all the time. Also pipefitters and welders in the field would cook like that all the time. Along with a small grill they built that's attached to the bed of their trucks for cooking. It wasn't uncommon to see trucks going down the road with the grill smoking.:lol_hitti

I've used the disc you gave me a whooping 6 times last year. I feel so ashamed that I haven't used it as much as you. I did bring special "New Mexico Chili pepper" from Texas on my last trip to make the chili sauce for a good asado. Yes it's called New Mexico chili peppers. It is a pepper that was created by the New Mexico University and grown in Hatch, New Mexico!

Looks like ya'll are staying busy with the farm! You're planning to build a new shop and I'm working on remodeling a kitchen oh the joys of winter projects! LOL

Love the school deal! That weather, in our area, knowing NOBODY would be there, the school would have postponed on Thursday.
It was a sweet deal for sure !! There were a few people from farther away that called in to the school on Friday to see if it was going to be cancelled and they said nope, too much invested to bring it all together to cancel it !! The place was PACKED with people so it clearly wasn't an issue.

It takes quite a bit for school to be called off as well. 2hrs late once in a while to let the snow plows go through. Last winter when it was below 0F with many mornings being -20F or below they sent a flyer home with the kids with the wind chill chart on it and it basically said to make sure your kid was bundled up good while waiting for the bus. After a few weeks of -20F it doesn't seem that bad anymore and life goes on

Yeah that calendar is probably awesome.
I've done a bit of looking and there are a few out there but I've never paid for a calendar before and I still won't do it. Sooooooo ...... if you have a 2020 16 month tractor calendar you don't need I could give it a good home :bounce:

Yeah. The Wok is pretty awesome !!

If I ate like that everyday I think I'd balloon up and pop. It is sooooooo tasty though !!!

Do you have a propane burner for it or do you use it on a campfire ?? Once I bought my burner it seems to get used in place of my conventional grill every time we want to grill. The food is just so amazing off of it !!

I sure hope all the planning actually results in something !! We're approaching almost too spendy territory but we already have the dirt work done so it's gotta go up !! If it's between paying for it as I go over the next 30yrs or borrowing money I'll borrow it so I can use it right away. It'll be paid off long before I could every save up enough to build it one little bit at a time !!

Yep, I got a short stand with a burner and a tall stand with a burner. I just need to plan to use it cause I keep delegating my time to other things besides cooking. Also we been working on eating healthier, so I need to really study some recipes and see about making it healthier! First step is to not use all of the butter/fat I would of used. :lol_hitti

JBL: even though it's cold, snow and the wind is blowing it still looks like you are very busy. AND eating more than a little. how are you heating that wok cause i don't see any propane hoses or is everything hidden under that big old Wok (isn't that an old blade off a tractor attachment for tilling soil?).

that auction brings back memories and happy for you that you not only made time to attend, but helped make it successful. my 3 youngest went to a local christian school from kindergarten through high school (ALL ONE BUILDING) and my bride was in charge of wrapping all the items into gift baskets so they'd sell for a bit more and be great gifts. she also ran the entire auction a few of those years so the auction was a fun (and busy) night and also a relief after it was over that we'd get our life back for a bit (sort of).

stay warm and hope the weather gets better soon.

cheers
