Good time to check out the brakes and pump them up, that's a lot of weight pushing the dog's tail!.
Nephew has three of them and every year at least one of them with bad brakes. We have found it is easiest to undo all of the lines, empty the reservoir and blow out with air. hook up lines, fill reservoir with new brake fluid, and manually pump the surge pump to remove air bubbles and have solid brakes. Takes a little time, but better than being pushed through an intersection, praying you don't get T boned or jackknife.

Nephew just had a 500lb concrete block poured for the back of his pickup.

No thanks, I'll drive Wesley (Western Star tractor with East dump trailer)

Bob the cat had a dead battery and it seems the alternator wasn't charging so out it had to come.
KIMG2460.JPG

5 minutes tops !! Crazy how easy it was to do.
KIMG2461.JPG

Well that makes sense. I was using a POS battery charger lol.
KIMG2462.JPG

$229 for a new reman alternator and another $25ish for some filters to put on the shelf.
KIMG2464.JPG

Walter gets to be a camper hauler this weekend. Pops needs the farm truck to pull a few things around.
KIMG2465.JPG

We went to one of my BIL's houses for the weekend and I got the best spot of the 8 of us that are here. I backed in, dropped the bags and called it good :lol2:

A few days back a master welder fabricator buddy popped in with the mini-ex bracket to make the wood splitter attach to the mini. He got it all fit up and we split a few pieces of wood before dark.
53183161987_b74e30b9bf_b.jpg

The "few pieces" of wood !!!
53183872111_fd14020f6a_b.jpg

Today I decided to tackle this mess of a pile .....
53184245893_7a99deb2a7_b.jpg

It took about 15 minutes to get the hang of things and wowser is this nice !!!!! Pick the chunk off the pile and spin around to the split pile and split it there. Makes for a no fuss job compared to a skid mounted splitter .....
53183162192_2a4b45e10c_b.jpg

This is about half the pile split and it only took an hour. Certainly didn't expect it to be that speedy !!
53183936759_df6f2eb493_b.jpg

A buddy asked if I had any hay I could spare as he was short due to very dry conditions up here this year. Yup !!! Load 1 of 3 that Walter and I hauled to him.
53184246188_46244f7dac_b.jpg

Load 2 of 3 !!! Even gave him a little bale ... ya know ... for little cows :lol_hitti
53183937044_6002e0bc99_b.jpg

Whilst out and about scouting customer corn fields we noticed one field that had pretty severe wind damage. I called the customer and he met us out there and we walked around the field a bit but didn't want to walk all 110 acres so I brought my flying camera box out to do some more looking around !!
53184245683_d6a541596e_b.jpg

I had to climb on the spare trailer tire to make the antenna things happy lol
53184245653_54e4d82d38_b.jpg

Pops got a field prepped to plant Rye in so I helped him load the grain drill. Or rather I loaded the totes on the tender, drove them over to him, started the tender engine and watched him load the drill while I took this picture :lol_hitti
53183872176_fdd8ef303c_b.jpg

Since I had the drone all tuned up and operational again I decided to take a few pics of my place to see just exactly how much **** I had sitting around ....
53183879681_11ba82663c_b.jpg

It's fun looking at things from above but it always makes me think I need to go through the entire property with a flame thrower to make the brush and weeds go away and then get a dozen roll offs to make the stuff go away .....
53184082575_6e77ecaaec_b.jpg

But then I remember that it's not stuff ..... it's treasure
53183879541_d7c2d24060_b.jpg

I have no idea why I thought taking a picture of a camera with a camera was so funny .... that's not true ... I know why and it's because I'm mentally 9yrs old
53184253883_fda4c6edac_b.jpg

Does that look like close to 15 cord of wood stacked up there ?? Concrete pad is 24x24 and the stack is average 5.5-6' high with a 10x12 area to fill yet and a 5x5 area empty where the stove is. The math puts that at 18.5 cord actually. Should hold 24ish cord at 5.5' average when it's all filled in. That better be enough for the winter !!!!!
53184253878_703aa8b23e_b.jpg

I dropped in on Miss Lily while she was trying to hide :lol_hitti

cool ariel photos! Place looks a lot better than most pasture property I used to see when I was growing up. Seems folks away from the town/city couldn't get rid of anything. Then when the kids come in, the place starts to clear up and they find stuff that if it would have been sold back in the days it would have been in a better condition instead of the cars/trucks just rotting in the dirt.

Yesterday Pops and I went to watch a large dairy chop their silage. You may ask why we'd drive an hour to watch farm machinery do farm machinery things and well, duh. It's damn cool !!!!!!!
KIMG2480 (1).JPG

This stuff was irrigated and over 12' tall !!
KIMG2481.JPG

The Krone Big X 1100 is 1163hp and was eating 16 rows at a time going 2.8mph and drinking almost 50gal/hr in fuel while doing so. It was amazing !!!
KIMG2484.JPG

Pops and I got to working on the lean-to wall yesterday as well.
KIMG2485.JPG

Little Man wanted to help so we put him to work !!
KIMG2487.JPG

I've been gathering 2x4x16's for a while from other projects and finally had enough to do the lean-to. Most were quite squirrelly and needed some coaxing to straighten out.
KIMG2486.JPG

Ready for tin !!

We don't have much for dairy around here, but there is a BIG family farm that feeds 100,000+ head of cattle. They run big Claas choppers. They pile silage out in the country, and then haul it to the feedlots after they feed the silage piles at the feedlots.

That pipe wrench should work to straighten out those poor old 2x4s!
It did work quite well. I told Pops to get something to twist on them and he came back with that with a big grin :lol_hitti

Hell, that huge pipe wrench should just scare em enough to go straight!
I'm struggling to formulate replies that abide by forum rules with these last two comments :drink:

There are a couple dairies near us that do that as well. Pile it in the field and haul it back a few days worth at a time in the winter. Seems silly at first but it actually makes a fair but of sense.

I actually have that same pipe wrench. haven't personally had a use for it as of yet but when I do i'll be ready.

sorry I've been MIA from GJ and your doings cause my mom's house needed more than a little TLC. it's about done so I can get to my own TLC stuff.

keep doing what you do and letting us see a portion of it. I know if it's drizzly rain here you best be getting ready for the cold season so stay warm. hopefully all that firewood will keep you toasty for your inside stuff.

I have that big 48" alum one and a 345lb cast iron Irwin version. You gotta be a man to move that thing around !! I've had a 10' pipe with a 445lb dude standing on the end of it trying to break a Kaiser vacuum pump free back in the Leedstone days. 4500ft/lbs on it and it held up !! I was impressed. I had to smack the pipe with a sledge to get it to finally break free so who knows how much force an 8lb sledge being swing by an overweight and out of shape dude creates but it took it !!

I'll have to get actual TV again so I can watch for your remodeling show on TLC

If that big pile of wood isn't enough for the winter I think I'll have a stove for sale next spring :lol_hitti

I am super stoked to get a shipment of these badass looking FSS's from @jeepxj to give out to our seed corn customers!!! He has really gone above and beyond making these into what you see here.
34121.jpeg

Blocked up some of the big logs I hauled home this summer. My little MS250 is getting a workout for sure !!
KIMG2506.JPG

This mini-ex wood splitter is the bomb-diggity!!!
KIMG2520.JPG

I split them all into the trailer. This sure is nice !!!
KIMG2521.JPG

Mosey over to the pile and dump it out.
KIMG2535.JPG

Room for one more load of splitters and four totes. Another 2 cord or so should fit making a total of 24-25 cord on the pile. Neat. I think I have in that 10 cord range in logs and cut up pieces for next year already. Hopefully we'll be able to bring even more home this fall once fieldwork is done.
KIMG2536.JPG

I have my eye on this grove here to mow off what I can this fall. Likely will stack the logs up in the valley behind the grove to keep until I get time to haul it home.
KIMG2531.JPG

That pile by the stove should be enough but I got a couple ton of coal to try burning this winter. The plan is to toss some in on the -25F and windy nights to help the crappy poplar and boxelder make it through the night !!
KIMG2517.JPG

I had six bags on there and dropped three off at a neighbor's place. Five ton on Walters back and he was happy as a lark.
KIMG2516.JPG

Guess what ?!?!?! Harvest 2023 is underway !!!

How are the beans doing up north?
Oh boy lol. Horseshit at best. 5-10% of them didn't germinate right away because it was so dry so we have beans that are still grass green next to beans that are 8% in places. They've been averaging 11-12.5% so that's a touch dry but good overall. Yield has been all over as well but I think we'll average in the real low 30's. This variety did 72 for us average a few years back so it's hella dry here !! I honestly don't know where the bushes that are there came from. We've had 5-1/2" of rain since planting and over half that came from one storm late July.

Your zoom game is on point !!

I think that's a version 1.2 FSS. It was the 2nd one I got I think. It's holding up great so far on the magnet which has been a great test of the strength of the bottom where the mount holes are. I move it from there to the skiddy and lawnmower as needed.

We're starting to lose sight of the boiler with all of that wood.

That's a beautiful sight to someone who burns wood. Kind of like a full hay shed. If you run out of either of those you will be darn sure to never have that happen again lol.

@jblnut 20 plus cord to make it through the winter seems like a lot just to heat the house. Or is that heating the shop too?

I am very excited to have that much wood up there already! I have no idea how much I burnt last winter as I burned a lot of junk lumber and miscellaneous stuff that was hard to keep track of. If I had to guess I would say over 20 cord for sure. I had the stove running for a little under seven months last season :headshake

When it was real cold it was using a little over a cord a week to heat the house, shop, and the well house. Last year's firewood was not very well seasoned and I could really tell when I got into the dryer stuff.

My brother-in-law burns wood in a stove in the basement and I'm hoping to cut a bunch with him this fall. He can take the 6-in and smaller stuff and I will take the larger stuff.

These replies get a lot longer when I use the talk to text deal on my phone instead of one finger hunting down every made up button on its tiny keypad :lol_hitti

Long time reader, first time caller. Love your stories and family approach to farming and problem solving.

Gotta ask, what’s the story on your very versatile and handy dump trailer?

That’s what I need behind my JD 820 tractor or Polaris Ranger.

Thanks for stopping by and the kind words !!

The trailer is one of the first farm dump wagons built by Midsota Manufacturing when they were still in Albany. It's got a 78" wide bottom deck and was built 6" wider than normal so we could load our Case 430 skiddy in it at the time. It'll dump just about anything that goes into it. It's got 12.5l-15 tires and ag bearings so it's not meant to go highway speeds when it's full. I'll pull it at 45-50 when empty though without a worry.

Honestly it'd be a bit much for an 820 or a Ranger. My 5510 gets pushed around when it's full of dirt and it'll slide the back end around with a big load of firewood like that in it as well. I tried using my Farmall M on it and it didn't have the hydraulic snort to dump it lol. It's a giant one way cylinder so it takes a bunch of oil to push it all the way out.

They make a smaller version that pulls great behind a smaller tractor or Ranger. One of the former owners of Midsota is my neighbor and he's always buzzing around with one of the UTV trailers. I think it'll haul 4,000lbs and has a self-contained hydraulic cylinder that you just need to supply power to.

Here's a link to their website.

That sounds like a really nice custom version of their trailer -- nice neighbor to have!

I've often looked at their smaller UTV trailer for a future purchase. It looks like they make good products.

Om nom nom we're eating corn !!
KIMG2545.JPG

Sometimes looking at a picture makes you rethink how the day went. Look at those cool clouds above that nice tractor. Gotta step back to see the beauty in things sometimes I guess.
KIMG2548.JPG

Up the auger and in the wet bin, up the auger and into the dryer, up the auger and into the storage bin, up another auger into another bin. The poor corn is going to get dizzy :lol_hitti
KIMG2546.JPG

I am Combinus Prime and I send this message to any surviving Harvesters taking refuge among the corn. We are here. We are waiting.
KIMG2550.JPG

What a bunch of bologna !! Gonna season this one with Dinosaur juice !!
KIMG2554.JPG

We became trampoline people yesterday. It was 10 minutes away and $75 so I can't argue with that.
KIMG2555.JPG

Steps brought to you by EZGO 🤣
KIMG2557.JPG

After almost a year of searching we found a 26' Wishek 862NT tillage disk with a harrow. Our current Wishek is a 16' and the new 4wd tractor plays with it so this one should make it bark a bit more !!
wishek 3.jpg

It's 150 miles from home and weighs close to 30,000lbs so it'll give Walter a nice workout at 30-35mph one day next week.
wishek 2.jpg

If I bring a spare tire along I won't need it ..... Hopefully!! I'm going to bring tools to check the wheel bearings and grease them up real good as well. I also plan to chain the hitch solid somehow so it doesn't bounce around so much. Hopefully it works.

Nephew runs a Landoll with similar tooth finishing harrow. We break 2-3 bolts every year where harrow attaches to disk frame.
might want to take a couple of spares so you don't need them :) think his are 5/8" x 7". Need come along and tall jack to get it lined back up when it breaks.

every year we say we're going to drill the 5/8" to 3/4" and try that ... each year, it never happens. :ROFLMAO:

Time to get the combine ready to combine the winter rye in a few weeks.

Farm Sip Supreme in black is mounted in the 2388 !!!

Pops and I got the pads for the orange bin done a few days back. I'm quite excited to get that bin over here so I can fill it with oats and not have to move the mixer around so many times. Not sure how I'll get it over here or on the pads nicely but it'll happen somehow lol

Love the wrench on the hitch, might need to have an extra bowl of Wheaties when you're going to use it!

Big John will snort and keep on going, and your fuel man will be visiting more often :)
We don't adjust the front/rear tilt often but when we do I use a 48" pipe wrench and the mini-ex to pull on it lol. It's also for loosening the big nuts in the disc gangs..... Again the mini and big pipe wrench get used. Work smarter not harder !!

I think it'll drink in the 15-17gal/hr which okay with me for as much work as it'll be getting done !!

We have a 16' Wishek now and have never broken a harrow bolt. We do have a few spares of things that will need to be moved to the new disc. I have a couple metal toolboxes to mount on implements to keep spare stuff in but I've had them for a few years so who knows when that'll happen :lol_hitti

whats the bracket in the 2388 look like?
It's a cobbled together hunk of metal that came with the combine when we got it. I'll snag a pic when Dad decides I'm old enough to run the combing lol
