I purchased some capves a few eeeks ago and they have taken they and name each one of them.
Growing up my grandparents got a few calves one year, this was after a few years without livestock. My brother and one of our cousins named one of them. One day they asked our grandpa if they could take the calf for a walk. He said sure they could, he thought they wouldn't go through with it (they would have been under 10 at the time). The calves were In a pen in the bank barn, sure enough they got "their" calf out of the pen, out of the barn and he saw them walking their calf along the side of the barn. If I remember correctly they only let the one calf out. Grandpa was surprised.

Looks like a great firewood table and the warmer weather is pleasant.

As a follow up in post #5851 I mentioned ordering a QT 3 point conversion, like yours. Well dang it all if the vendor didn't have it and then provided a refund. So back to shopping.....
There are a few sellers on eBay with them listed. I’m sure they’re out there !! I can’t believe how handy it’s been so far. I’ve use pallet forks for pallet fork things, a smaller bucket as a carry all deal, larger buckets as ballast when doing loader work, I even tried the hay fork but the little guy couldn’t lift my round bales so that was a flop. I’m excited to use the land lever deal I have for the skiddy on it while prepping a bunch of area to seed this spring. Should work better than the skiddy as it’s not nearly as heavy.

Wow !! Usually calves of any size bolt when they see they’re loose lol. I’ve walked my fair share of calves around and chased even more. Bet that was fun !

@CNC_RICK Hi Rick !! Thanks for the mention in Uncle Bobs thread !! I enjoy sharing what we do out here and like when others do as well. I need to post in here more regularly instead of all over the other threads on GJ.

I “won” the bid on a pair of cedar chairs and a LP fire pit at a silent auction at a charity event a few weeks back. “Won” lol. Spent $750 on these chairs and fire pit. Oops 😬
IMG_2958.jpeg

The little people posse saw the chairs and fire pit in the shop and asked if we could make s’mores. Well sure !! I told them they had to make roaster sticks as our usual sticks are trapped in the camper. I gave them each a piece of 1/8” 316SS and told them to shine them up.
IMG_2960.jpeg

Roasting mallows in the shop on a -21f afternoon.
IMG_2961.jpeg

Seems we have gotten a bit of my moneys worth already 😂 Plus I intend to take them apart, make a pattern of each part and build 4-6 more of these for the patio by the house.
IMG_2962.jpeg

I stopped at the meat counter at a local grocery store. $24.99/lb for a ribeye !?!? I likely ate $40 in ribeye for lunch yesterday that I found in the freezer :lol_hitti

@jblnut... Thanks for writing back and Bob's yer uncle... It seems that Bob is everyone's favorite uncle. I'll bet you took a look at that new fire pit and thought about cooking some eggs, bacon, and some taters in your disc blade (Wok). I'd bet money on that... Looks like the s'mores worked out well. I'm glad that you always involve the kiddos.

The thought absolutely crossed my mind about putting the Wok on it :lol_hitti

I really try to involve the kiddos and it’s getting earlier all the time as they get older. I figure if I get half or less done with them helping that’s a big win. I have to tell myself that or I go bonkers when I’m at the end of the day and didn’t hardly get anything done. They seem to like helping and I can’t tell them no.

No reason to tear one of the chairs apart to make plans, as there are lots of free plans out there for them. Some even can be made as rockers.... There are also some plans sets that are a bit fancier, but those cost a few buck to get.
I’ve looked into plans online and I can’t seem to get my brain into “transfer from computer screen to wood” mode. I figure if I make some full size thick paper templates I can trace onto the wood I can build a bunch of them at once.

I always liked tracing things out onto construction paper and cutting them out when I was younger so I figure this is a good way to stay young 😂

A few weeks back we had three parties planned in three days so I loaded up on stuff.
IMG_2974.jpeg

I decided to get a stock tank to put pop, water and drinks into instead of having a dozen coolers with stuff in them. I put some water in it and stuck it outside to turn into a giant ice cube. This proved to be a great idea in concept but worked out poorly. It was so massive that it took up too much space and was sharp as it thawed. Oh well.
IMG_2978.jpeg

Tables, chairs and food station setup. Plan is to have a taco bar all three days. First night is a bunch of guys I used to work with when I was at Leedstone. Second night is our Golden Harvest customer appreciation event. Third day was Miss Alyssa’s 10th birthday party.
IMG_2981.jpeg

I spent days and days cleaning up in here. I vacuumed under all the pallet racking and moved all the stuff off the floor so I could get everywhere. I even mopped the floor twice !! It felt great to have it all cleaned up again.
IMG_2986.jpeg

Kiddos had a blast riding scooters inside during the birthday party.

The thing with chairs like that is you know when you sit down if it is a good chair. Looking at plans can't tell you that, reviews might help but when you put your **** in the seat you just know that is the one!

If you like these and they fit just right than it is a good idea to take one apart and copy it.

Thanks for all your posts! Reminds me of summers on my grandparents farm in PA

The free ones from Kreg are pretty simple and don't require a lot of layout work, other than a few curves. The ones from Construct101.com are laid out on 1" grids, so pretty easy to make your own patterns. Lots of options out there.
I’ll have to look into the grid ones. I like that idea. Thanks for the suggestion !!

You put into words what I couldn’t. For a wooden chair, these are crazy comfy. I’ve sat in a lot of wooden chairs in my life (who hasn’t lol) and hate most of them. These I like. They’re all torx screws so they’ll come apart easily and should go back together easily as well.

I have some home sawn white oak that I’m going to build the first set out of.

Thanks for stopping by !!

You might want to make your pattern pieces out of masonite (tempered hardboard). They will last much longer and you can use them with a flush cut router bit to take your pieces to final size.
That’s an excellent idea !!

Three parties in a row is a bit of work! Nice space to have them in though.
It wasn’t that bad but I was late to bed the first two nights and I sure do like my beauty sleep so the third day I was a bit soggy 😂

Your thread is one of my GJ favorites.

I have to ask with all the talk of Bird Flu going around right now, has this affected your chicken farming at all?
Thanks Jon !!

We need to follow the laid out biosecurity guidelines from the mothership but we haven’t had any issues here. There was one single barn with it confirmed last spring but other than that what we’re doing seems to be working.

Just noticed that a dozen eggs is almost $8 at the store with a sign that read something like “bird flu is causing disruptions in the egg price. We will try to source eggs as economical as possible. Thank you for understanding”. Egg flocks are being affected more than broilers. The egg birds live a lot longer and have a higher chance of being affected.

Mike, I wouldn't have so many 1/8" stainless rods if I could master TIG welding. I do find myself using them for all sorts of little projects, like organizing the little disks for the Dremel tools.

That’s a pretty good use for them !! I have a bundle of 1/16-1/2” 316SS rods that is a good 12” round when gathered up that I got at an auction for a few bucks. I’ve been using them for all kinds of non-TIG welding things.

With tacos being involved I can come down for all three days and help eat I mean help with anything for food.
There’s a futon upstairs and a fridge full of beer in the office. Stop on out !!

@jblnut

Do you happen to have a link as to what light fixtures those are that you have in the shop there?
I got them from my electrician so I don’t have a link. I think I have a box from one of them around I can look at. I have two on a shelf that I can look at to see if they have a label. I think they’re 150w 2’ high bay lights. I really like them. Bright as all get out. No idea what they cost. I told my electrician what I wanted and he got them and I paid a big lump sum when he was done. Some things I don’t want to know what they cost lol. My tight *** would hesitate and want to be cheap and then I’d have something I hate just because I wanted to save $18.

Miss Lily helped moved a few tubs of combustibles around before it got cold a few weeks back. I gotta figure out how to make that smile of hers into something that’ll thaw snow because it absolutely radiates. Love this kid.
IMG_3022.jpeg

Once we were done with that I hoped on and moved some wood around. Turns out you cannot use the grapple to grapple wood or the perfect size. It’ll fold over in a quick hurry. I always thought it was a bit flimsy looking and now it’s been confirmed.
IMG_3024.jpeg

Toss it up on the surgeons table and stick some random pieces of metal near it and stare at it for a while until a plan arrives in a foggy metal vision.
IMG_3029.jpeg

I beat the snot out of it until it was time for the next step. I decided to play the “find the next weakest link” game and beef it up.
IMG_3036.jpeg

I need to find a new pivot rod and it’ll be ready to break something else again. Or maybe I use the skiddy to grapple things. Naw. That’s no fun !!
IMG_3074.jpeg

We watched “Ron’s Gone Wrong” up in the shop one evening. Pretty funny movie !!
IMG_3060.jpeg

Whilst cleaning stuff off shelves in the garage we came upon a few boxes of wedding gifts. Mama decided we’d likely never use the fancy bowls so I brought them to the shop to use. Fanciest things I have up here and we put French fries and pizza in them :lol_hitti
IMG_3059.jpeg

The service manager at the local John Deere dealer called me to tell me about a winter service special they had going on and strong armed me into bringing my chicken barn tractor up there for them to play with. I went up yesterday and met with the mechanic to go over what all needed to be done and what should be done. I’ll leave the should be done list out as it has enough in it to warrant its own build thread lol. The needs to be done list included - both rear wheel bearings and seals, front axle king pin and center pivot bushings, new hydraulic pump, turbo is leaking oil, new hyd sump pickup assembly, new water pump, new idler puller and tensioner assembly, and lastly the radiator has a pinhole leak in it. Yikes 😂 I gave the go ahead on a lot of it and I’ll do the easy stuff at home so order me the parts. I don’t intend to get rid of the tractor any time soon and it’s worthy of a few dollars. All the things are wear items so it should be good for a while. I paid $8500 for it 7yrs ago with the intent of sticking some $$ into it and never really have. It’s worth far more than that so it’s all good. I bet it’ll be a $7-8k bill between parts and labor. The hyd pump and turbo are close to $2500 alone.

The right rear axle is off. Doesn’t look like too much damage other than needing bearings. That’s good news !! The mechanic says “I figured out why the front diff was out of oil. I filled it up and it ran out the input seal as fast as it went in”. May as well fix that as well !!
IMG_3175.png

My lube guy called and said they had a truck in the area so I got to work setting up a lube station.
IMG_3095.jpeg

Bottom of an IBC tote to be used as a drip catcher.
IMG_3096.jpeg

Moved all my oil/antifreeze/lubes over to some shelves I had in the old shop.
IMG_3107.jpeg

Broke out the thread cutting stuffs and made some pipes.
IMG_3109.jpeg

Pour pipes mounted and plumbed.
IMG_3119.jpeg

Set just right to fill a 2.5gal jug or my oil can/jug with a spout. Should work well !!
IMG_3120.jpeg

15w40 in the bottom, antifreeze in the top. Should be good until fall.

I sure do enjoy their time out here as well !! All three will be home all summer and I've already got a few projects lined up for them to do . I have a few trailers I'd like painted and they are going to help build a shed over the firewood pile. Should be a good time as long as I remember to slow down and get into teaching mode when they're around.

Not to be a debbie downer but I think your estimate on the bill for the chicken tractor is a bit too light. I'm guessing you're going to be double your estimate.
Here's how my mind sees this -> If I were to find a different tractor it'd likely need something at some point unless I buy a new one. A new one will be easily $50k+ to boot to get into and have a DPF and maybe even DEF. Pass on that stuff. So I can stick some $$$ into this 5510 and not feel real bad about it. I bought it knowing I'd have to stick money into it and never really have other than some small things.

I really like your lube station setup though, that looks really slick.
I see what you did there :lol_hitti

We used the lube station yesterday to do a couple oil changes and it worked great. I gotta get my big IBC tote oil change pan built so I don't have to swap 5gal pails in the middle of the drain process. That almost always makes a mess !!

Oh I agree with you on the reasoning, just saying that I think the cost will be a lot higher. Parts and labour are high and not getting cheaper.

By an IBC tote oil change pan are you planning on cutting down a tote so you can place it underneath equipment? I actually seen a really slick setup in one guys shop, he kept a 500L tote intact and just set it beside whatever he was working on. Then he used a fluid extractor to pump the old oil directly into the tote. That way there was no mess while draining and you didn't spill any of it when you moved the tote.

I was joking with the tech yesterday that I may need to trade it in to pay the bill. He says “better bring something else in as well” 😂

Yes. Cutting a tote down to that 16” or so overall height to make a big oil pan. Pops has an oil pan on wheels with a pump and it’s forever giving him fits so I don’t know if I want to go that route. I like the idea though. After each oil change I’d empty the tote pan into a tote outside.

Or by fluid extractor do you mean a suction device that goes into the engine and ***** the oil out ?

Yep, pumps directly from the engine to the tote.

A dedicated hose reel for a pump that's mounted to a wall, the pump discharges into a tote outside while the hose reel can be pulled to the tractor and with nozzle/small hose attachment to the end of the hose, the fluid can be extracted from any engine/transmission/gear housing/etc without all of the heavy fluid rolling around.

Before I got here today I was feeling pretty proud of myself. Drove to the local Advance Auto and dumped ten gallons of used oil in their tank on Monday. Assembled and hung a fancy paper towel rack next to the garage door on Tuesday. Cleaned up a couple of tools on Wednesday. Seeing your progress makes me really really happy but it makes me sad at the same time. I need spend more time in the garage and less time on the Garage Journal. If the GJ didn't bring me so much happiness that would be a good plan.

Dang it !! More things to spend money on :willy_nil

With a float to cut power to prevent overfilling
An overfilled tote sounds like a problem for older Mike to deal with :lol_hitti

I'm proud of you all the way up here !!! Spend your time where you enjoy spending time. If it's on GJ spend it here. If it's playing Tetris with your Grandson in the driveway spend it there. If it's in the PT on a road trip to Central MN spend it there and I'll have a warm cut of coffee and a thick steak waiting for you :)

Pops and I embarked on another woodworking journey.
IMG_3139.jpeg

I missed a few steps in the middle but here’s a wooden rectangle!!
IMG_3169.jpeg

I wanted to put it all together with recessed screws and plugs so I got to work making some.
IMG_3157.jpeg

Plug #1 didn’t want to come out so I went after it with a screwdriver and somehow mangled my thumb 🤔
IMG_3155.jpeg

Missed some more in between pics it seems. We had to glue boards together to make the shelf to dimensions Pinterest told Mama Bear it needed to be.
IMG_3172.jpeg

Goofiest design I’ve ever seen but this is what she wanted :dunno:
IMG_3171.jpeg

Pops got it stained while I worked on putting rear hydraulics on his lawnmower and detailed the white van as best as one could/should for something that’s worth $1500 lol.
IMG_3210.jpeg

Now he can do tractor things !!

Interesting design on the shelf unit. Is it for house plants ? What's the need for the vertical spacing ? Very nice work on it though no matter what the design.
Thank you !! It always takes a lot longer to do stuff than you plan but this one turned out pretty sharp if I do say so myself :lol_hitti

It's primary purpose is to stop Mama Bear from asking me to build it. Happy to oblige. No idea whatsoever what will be going on it other than "lightweight knick knacky things" :dunno:
